Successive ESPRIT Algorithm for Joint DOA-Range-polarization Estimation With polarization sensitive FDA-MIMO Radar

polarization sensitive frequency and frequency diversity array (FDA)-MIMO (PSFDA-MIMO) hybrid radar is an emerging technology. The existing algorithms for parameter estimation with PSFDA-MIMO radar need multiple-dimensional searches, whose computational complexity is high. To reduce the computational complexity, in this paper, a search-free algorithm is proposed to estimate 4-D parameters with PSFDA-MIMO radar. First, direction of arrival (DOA) is estimated with the estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm using the rotational invariance of the receiving array. Second, based on the estimated DOA parameter, range estimation is obtained with the ESPRIT algorithm using the rotational invariance of the transmitting array. Finally, polarization parameters are estimated with the ESPRIT algorithm using the rotational invariance of the polarization domain. Thus, the proposed algorithm is termed the successive ESPRIT algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

polarization-sensitive arrays (PSAs) have been received extensive attention due to their superior anti-interference performance, and have been utilized in the anti-interference applications for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in recent years. However, in high dynamic conditions, the performance of the conventional PSA interference suppression algorithms might possibly deteriorate due to null mismatches in the beam-pattern. We herein develop the Covariance Matrix Taper (CMT) scheme for the dual-polarized antenna arrays to mitigate the performance degradation owing to null mismatches. The efficiency and robustness of the power inversion incorporated with the proposed CMT scheme in the strong interference suppression is validated through illustrative simulation results.

Most existing array-based DOA estimation techniques only consider the effects of wideband features or polarization festures, and do not establish a unified signal model. In this paper, a general signal model of wideband polarization sensitive array is established by using wideband scalar array, narrowband polarization sensitive array signal model and DOA estimation technique. The ISM, CSM algorithm and the rank-loss dimension reduction MUSIC algorithm for polarization sensitive array are combined to obtain DOA estimation algorithm for wideband polarization sensitive arrays.

Spatial polarimetric time-frequency distribution based DOA estimation: combining ESPRIT with MUSIC

Spatial spectrum estimation technology has always been the focused research project in an array signal processing of High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR). This paper takes the polarization sensitive array for the model and combines with time-frequency analysis method for DOA estimation of HFSWR echo signals, which can make full use of the spatial, time-frequency, and polarized domain information of signals. The time-frequency MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms of integrated polarization information are studied, and the improved algorithm is proposed based on the advantages and disadvantages of both algorithms. The improved algorithm first estimates the azimuth angles of signals roughly with the polarized time-frequency ESPRIT algorithm and then determines a small scope centered on each azimuth. Within the scope, a more accurate DOA-estimated value is got by spectral peak search with MUSIC algorithm, so it can save computation time on the basis of accuracy of the DOA estimation, and their performance is analyzed by computer simulations.

DOA and polarization estimation via signal reconstruction with linear polarization-sensitive arrays

This paper addresses the problem of direction-of-arrival （DOA） and polarization estima- tion with polarization sensitive arrays （PSA）, which has been a hot topic in the area of array signal processing during the past two or three decades. The sparse Bayesian learning （SBL） technique is introduced to exploit the sparsity of the incident signals in space to solve this problem and a new method is proposed by reconstructing the signals from the array outputs first and then exploit- ing the reconstructed signals to realize parameter estimation. Only 1-D searching and numerical calculations are contained in the proposed method, which makes the proposed method computa- tionally much efficient. Based on a linear array consisting of identically structured sensors, the proposed method can be used with slight modifications in PSA with different polarization structures. It also performs well in the presence of coherent signals or signals with different degrees of polarization. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the parameter estimation precision of the proposed method.

The superior performance of polarization sensitive array (PSA) over the single polarization array is achieved by doubling system facilities and more computational load, which limits its applications in the radar field. The alternate polarization array (APA) can reduce this problem but it still has results in the obvious fencing lobe problem. A novel design of random polarization array (RPA) is presented in this paper. The grating lobe is overcome by randomizing the polarization of each array element. The optimal polarization code of RPA has been selected by minimizing the peak level of sidelobes. The effectiveness has been validated by simulation example.

A Fast DOA Estimation Algorithm Based on Polarization MUSIC

A fast DOA estimation algorithm developed from MUSIC, which also benefits from the processing of the signals’ polarization information, is presented. Besides performance enhancement in precision and resolution, the proposed algorithm can be exerted on various forms of polarization sensitive arrays, without specific requirement on the array’s pattern. Depending on the continuity property of the space spectrum, a huge amount of computation incurred in the calculation of 4-D space spectrum is averted. Performance and computation complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm is discussed and the simulation results are presented. Compared with conventional MUSIC, it is indicated that the proposed algorithm has considerable advantage in aspects of precision and resolution, with a low computation complexity proportional to a conventional 2-D MUSIC.

For polarization sensitive array (PSA) is limited by many restrictions in engineering applications, we studies a new alternate polarization array (APA). Analysis its performance of joint spectrum estimation of polarizational and spatial domain, and compared with the PSA. Study shows that compared with the PSA, the joint spectrum estimation of polarizational and spatial domain performance of APA approaches that of PSA, but the equipments and the number of channel is cut by half APA overcomes the problems caused by the complexity of the PSA system, so it has a wide application prospect in the field of array radar.

This paper deal with the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with a polarization sensitive array. The proposed DOA estimation method is based on a sparse representation of polarization sensor measurements with an overcomplete basis composed of samples from the polarization sensitive array manifold. It enforces sparsity by l1-norm to obtain a sharp amplitude estimate of the sparse solution vector that exhibits better resolution. There are two main steps considered about our associated sparse constrained algorithm: searching the sparsest solution of the matrix equation;and finding the DOA by calculating non-zero elements location of the sparsest solution. The obtained performance gain includes improved robustness to noise and the reduced computation complexity. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method on simulated data by plots of amplitude values and by computing the estimator error.

A new method is presented to estimate range, elevation, azimuth and polarization parameters for near-field sources based on the second order statistics. The algorithm adopts centrosymmetric cross polarization sensitive array, every sensor consists of orthogonal dipole-pairs with the same coordinate axis direction, constructs eight second order statistics matrixes by receiving polarized data. According to the tripartite relationships among subspace matrixes, eigenvalue of the matrix and the eigenvector of opposition the eigenvalue, the method estimate the 5-D parameters of near field sources utilizing the subspace decompositions method and total least squares method. Its characteristics are not require any spectral peak search, have high estimation accuracy, low computational complexity, and need once parameter pairing only. It can be applied to additive Gaussian noise environment. The performance of the proposed method is verified by computer simulations.
