Lateral positioning of vibration source for underground pipeline monitoring based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating sensing array

Monitoring the underground pipeline to prevent the illegal intrusion is a quite important work for civil infrastructure security management. The distributed fiber optic sensing technology nowadays has been widely used in the monitoring. Meanwhile, it also suffers from a relatively high false alarm rate. To tackle the difficult problem of false alarms, the paper develops a short range lateral positioning method of vibration source based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating vibration sensing array. Two parallel fiber optic cables are required to be deployed at the both sides of the pipeline. The positioning algorithm establishes a least square misfit function between the predicted and observed travel time difference based on the double-cable data. By systematically searching through the possible lateral distance in a selected range, an optimal distance can be identified according to the minimal misfit value. The tests on synthetic and field data validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Novel positioning method using Gaussian mixture model for a monolithic scintillator-based detector in positron emission tomography

We developed a high precision position decoding method for a positron emission tomography (PET) detector that consists of a thick slab scintillator coupled with a multichannel photomultiplier tube (PMT). The DETECT2000 simulation package was used to validate light response characteristics for a 48.8 mmx48.8 mmx10 mm slab of lutetium oxyorthosilicate coupled to a 64 channel PMT. The data are then combined to produce light collection histograms. We employed a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to parameterize the composite light response with multiple Gaussian mixtures. In the training step, light photons acquired by N PMT channels was used as an N-dimensional feature vector and were fed into a GMM training model to generate optimal parameters for M mixtures. In the positioning step, we decoded the spatial locations of incident photons by evaluating a sample feature vector with respect to the trained mixture parameters. The average spatial resolutions after positioning with four mixtures were 1.1 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) at the corner and 1.0 mm FWHM at the center section. This indicates that the proposed algorithm achieved high performance in both spatial resolution and positioning bias, especially at the corner section of the detector. Store layout optimization using indoor positioning system

Indoor positioning systems have attracted considerable attention from practitioners and firms seeking to optimize the consumer shopping experience with the goal of attaining increased revenue and profitability. Acknowledging the importance of indoor positioning systems in store layout optimization, we conducted a field experiment for 11 months in order to develop algorithms for connecting indoor positioning data with customer transaction data. Using fingerprinting as a primary data collection technique, we compared positioning and transaction data before and after critical store layout optimization decisions in order to identify which customer movement patterns generated the highest sales. In contrast to previous works on indoor positioning systems, which focused solely on developing algorithms or techniques to increase accuracy rates, our algorithms in principle integrate computing and marketing perspectives. Our findings can be applied to store layout optimization and personalized marketing.

Coil positioning for Wireless Power Transfer System of Automatic Guided Vehicle Based on Magnetic Sensing

As an auxiliary function of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system, coil positioning can solve the power and efficiency degradation during power transmission caused by misalignment of the magnetic coupler. In this paper, a Hall sensor array is used to measure the change of magnetic flux density. By comparing the multisensor data fusion results with the preset data obtained from the coil alignment, the real-time accurate positioning of the receiving coil can be realized. Firstly, the positioning model of the receiving coil is built and the variation of magnetic flux density with the coil misalignment is analyzed. Secondly, the arrangement of the Planar 8-direction symmetric sensor array and the positioning algorithm based on data fusion of magnetic flux density variations are proposed. In order to avoid coil positioning misalignment caused by the unstable magnetic field distribution which is actually affected by the change of mutual inductance during automatic guided vehicle (AGV) alignment, the constant current strategy of primary and secondary sides is proposed. Finally, the coil positioning experimental platform is built. The experimental results show that the coil positioning method proposed in this paper has high accuracy, and the positioning error is within 4 cm.

One of the most challenging issues in the design of system for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is to keep the energy consumption of the sensor nodes as low as possible. Many localization systems require that the nodes keep the transceiver active during a long time consuming energy. In this work we propose a scheme to reduce the energy consumption of the mobile nodes that need to know their positions. Our strategy consists of decreasing the idle listening and an optimized allocation of the localization tasks on the nodes. Thus, the nodes that are externally powered calculate the position for the resource-constrained nodes. The scheme is based on a low-power IEEE 802.15.4 non-beacon enabled network.

Location tracking of passive MID tags is useful for its ultra-low cost, but is very challenging for its passive nature. A passive RFID tag relies on no internal power source and draws power from the field created by the reader to power the microchip's circuits. This has made passive RFID tags highly sensitive to surrounding materials, as well as any disturbance. Therefore, conventional machine learning models may not perform well. In this paper, we propose an ensemble based machine learning model, together with novel feature engineering techniques, for location tracking of passive MD, which can work seamlessly with any supervised learning methods. The reader-based sub-models training method used in our model significantly reduces the training time by splitting our model into smaller sub-models and training then in parallel, which is desirable in real-world application.

The present research was conducted at the Budapest University of Technology in the field of indoor location using radio waves of Wi-Fi networks with a focus on practical application issues. Our goal was to enhance and combine existing algorithms and create an implementation that is efficient enough to enable real-time operation in 3D space in multi-level office environments while retaining the accuracy of more complex systems and allowing the addition of valuable context-sensitive features. The proposed solution is based on proven empirical propagation models, with the ability to augment and refine with surveyed radio fingerprint data. The results of the location algorithm are combined with heuristic probability distributions layered over the floor plan, thus incorporating available sensor data (accelerometers and magnetometers found in modern devices) and floor plans. The positioning system is used by an indoor navigation software developed for smartphones and complemented by a database of annotated entities (persons, devices, areas and points of interest) to allow the inference of location-dependent, context-sensitive information through an API provided for upper layer applications. This paper primarily focuses on the practical experience accumulated during the development of the positioning algorithm, as well as the possibilities opened by having a dynamic view of all the attributes assigned to persons either directly or indirectly via their locations or other external data sources. The implementation heavily relies on the Spatial extension of the Oracle Database system, which provides geometric data types and operations. The benefits of the employment of such a system are going to be presented in the current article.

The goal of this paper is to study the performance of a series of variable preprocessing methods (namely: selection, scaling and projection) in combination with artificial neural networks (ANNs) to estimate the 2-D position of photon impacts on the surface of a dual head PET detector based on continuous scintillators coupled to multi-anode photomultipliers (MA-PMT). We have used a dynamic readout structure based on weighted sums to code the 64 input signals of the photodetectors into the first 8 moments of the input distribution. The preprocessing methods have been applied to these 8 moments by means of a global optimization guided by a genetic algorithm (GA) that aims to minimize a nonparametric noise estimator called Delta Test (DT). The mean systematic error and mean spatial resolution have been evaluated in all cases. The results show that the lowest systematic error is obtained by the combination of scaling and projection, while the best spatial resolution was achieved with scaling alone.

The design of a four-quadrant detector for the semi-active laser seeker on the guided gun-launched projectile was studied. Several key parameters of the four-quadrant detector, including the photosensitive area, spectral responsivity, respond speed and noise equivalent power were discussed in the application. A bigger photosensitive area will be benefited to get a larger detection range, however, it will decrease the response speed and increase the positioning time. The spectral responsivity of the detector was chosen to be highly sensitive with the 1064nm wavelength laser, and its responsivities for the other wavelengths were relatively low. As the operation time is short, the response speed of the detector need to be increased as higher as possible, and many influencing factors were compromised in the design. A lower number of NEP was optimized for the better detecting capability. The orientation detection circuit and related positioning algorithm was developed to determine the yaw angle and pitch angle between the projectile and the target. Then the relative position errors, including the lateral and vertical deviation, were obtained from the four-quadrant detector. The influence of the size of facula with respect to the detecting sensitivity and effective measure ranges of the four-quadrant detector were analyzed. Finally, the sizes both of the facula and the four-quadrant detector were designed to ensure the most efficient use of the detecting sensitivity and effective measure ranges of the detector.
