Here we present 11 short practical exercises complementing the lecture on sensation and perception. The exercises cover all the classic topics in the curriculum (vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch) and work best in small groups of up to 10 students. They last between 5 and 45 min and range from short demonstrations on depth perception and sound source localization to more elaborate setups such as a double-blind taste test and an obstacle course with upside-down goggles. For each exercise, we provide a detailed description with theoretical background, materials, procedure, learning objectives, and our experiences from 10 semesters on what worked well and what not so much. We also present strategies for online delivery or suggest alternative exercises that can be implemented both in remote and in-person settings. Instructions for all exercises are available in German, English, and Spanish as open educational resources that can be reused, shared and modified.

It is widely known that learning-by-doing could significantly enhance students' learning in information security. SEED (SEcurity EDucation) labs being developed at Syracuse University can be particularly useful for students to learn security principles. Although the current version of SEED labs is mainly for university education, the labs could be also useful for job seekers and new employees in information security, by adding practical exercises. This paper presents our hands-on labs that could help these people perform more practical, compared to SEED labs, exercises within risk-free environments. Currently, our labs deal with macro malware, vulnerability scanning and mitigation, layer-7 DDoS attacks, and OS fingerprinting. Our labs are designed with the consideration of possible integration with SEED labs.

In recent years e-Health - the support for healthcare processes by means of information and communication technology - has become an essential issue for governments, organizations, companies and citizens all over the world. Although at the moment the use of e-Health solutions is expected to bring primarily regional advantages, a series of factors show that the topic has to be considered in an international context and qualified human resources are seen as a key ingredient for success. Therefore the "eLearning4eHealth Network" project at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien aims to develop internationally coordinated eLearning curses for e-Health based on specific knowledge profiles that have been developed in the project. practical trainings with real world tools (which at best are even in live operation) need to be an important part of the courses. Thus, a set of tools were evaluated and an appropriate suite of them were selected based on knowledge group specific use cases. Currently they are integrated in the eLearning environment and into the courses content.

The present paper demonstrates the application of quadcopters as educational material for students in aerospace computer science, as it is already in usage today. The work with quadrotors teaches students theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of robotics, control theory, aerospace and electrical engineering as well as embedded programming and computer science. For this the material, concept, realization and future view of such a course is discussed in this paper. Besides that, the paper gives a brief overview of student research projects following the course, which are related to the research and development of fully autonomous quadrotors.

Business graduates need advanced critical thinking abilities. Critical thinking is best taught as part of the core technical business curriculum and preferably early in the academic programme. Using action research, the researchers designed and tested the effectiveness of an intervention which sought to develop first-year accounting students' critical thinking abilities as part of their core curriculum. The intervention included explicit teaching on critical thinking in accounting and various active learning exercises (both in the classroom and after class), using a flipped classroom approach, simulations, reflection, real-life or practical examples and student feedback. All 459 registered students were exposed to the critical thinking intervention, and evidence of enhanced student engagement was noted. The effectiveness of the intervention was tested using a one-group pre-test-post-test pre-experimental design, using an accounting-related custom- designed critical thinking measurement tool. A total of 95 pre-test and 72 post-test student responses were statistically analysed (voluntary participation in the study reduced the number of participants below the 459 registered students). Participants' critical thinking scores showed a significant increase (p < 0.01) after the critical thinking intervention, indicating that the intervention was effective and that it is possible to develop first-year students' critical thinking skills by engaging them in specialised active learning exercises. The unique value of our findings lie in detailing the intervention (which other business educators could employ when including similar interventions in their core modules), developing and piloting the accounting-related critical thinking measurement tool and using the tool (and other methods) to show that the intervention was effective.

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the exchange of knowledge between classmates and the teacher in the framework of interactive music education. This goal was achieved with the help of the questionnaire method, which involved measuring the effectiveness of schoolchildren's progress and the coefficient of effectiveness of the knowledge gained. The study was attended by 120 students from three music schools in Beijing. It was found that the greatest effectiveness of interactive learning can be achieved by taking into account the following elements: the development of communication skills, the creation of a comfortable atmosphere in the classroom, the formation of teamwork, the use of modern multimedia technologies and the involvement of highly qualified teachers. After a year of study, 39% of rising musicians showed an improvement in communication skills and 32% developed their creative skills. The performance of four interactive groups turned out to be highly efficient. The results of the study are of scientific value for teachers who ensure the effectiveness of the knowledge gained.

A massive open online course on the laws of thermodynamics has been designed using the 5Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) lesson planning methodology and delivered using everyday engineering examples to provide familiar contexts for both a global cohort of more than 3000 learners ranging in age from teenagers to septuagenarians in 137 different countries plus a large class of 355 university undergraduates. In addition to the structured pedagogy, the massive open online course included innovations in the use of practical exercises, that could be performed in the learner's kitchen, and worked examples to enhance the learning experience. The massive open online course was provided in parallel with an introductory undergraduate course and as an additional learning resource for the undergraduate students. A little less than one-fifth of the undergraduates participated in the massive open online course and just over half of these responded that it would be an acceptable substitute for traditional lectures. The percentage completing the massive open online course was relatively high at 28% compared to 21% for other massive open online courses on the same platform, which is attributed to the pedagogy and strong support for social learning based on a survey of fully participating learners in the last week of the five-week course.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of a concept of practical exercises for studying autonomous flying robots for computer science students in a university environment. It will show how students may assemble, program, fly, network and apply autonomous flying robots i.e. drones, quadrocopters, hexacopters, octocopters, helicopters, helicams, bugbots in different exercises, improve their skills, theoretical and practical knowledge in different aspects.

Sociocultural systems thinking SCST is instrumental to Army leaders fulfilling the Armys mission in different parts of the world. SCST involves navigating the operational environments culture and interactions with its individuals in order to understand how various elements are interrelated to form a coherent whole. Furthermore, SCST is a capability that is honed through training. As part of a larger research effort to improve Army leaders SCST, the U.S. Army Research Institute ARI developed the Systems Analyses of Real Events SARE practical Exercise. SARE is discussion-based and designed to be implemented by a facilitator in groups of varying sizes. SARE uses real world events, both operational and non-operational, to cover various sociocultural systems SCS concepts, such as co-adaptive cycles, historical factors, multiple playersperspectives, and second- and third-order effects.

Environmental personality dispositions indicate typical individual interactions between humans and the surrounding environment. The elaboration of this idea in psychological literature we have encountered since the 70s of the 20th century, when scientists (e.g. Little, 1976, McKechnie, 1974, Gibson 1979) noticed differences in individual preferences in the perception of the environment and the resulting behaviour. Knowledge of these personality dispositions and especially self-awareness of one's own environmental preferences should be a part of environmental education and relevant concepts and options for practical application in education are discussed in this paper.
