Interference masking for secure wireless broadcast communications

Physical layer security has been recognised as a promising technique to realise secure wireless communications. A novel interference masking approach is proposed for secure broadcast scenarios. Specifically, when there is an external jamming node, precoding matrices at the source and jammer are carefully designed to ensure that each destination can detect only its own message, and not the information intended for other destinations which is masked with artificial noise. When there is no external jamming node, interference masking is implemented through user cooperation, in which destinations switch roles from jammer to relay nodes during different time slots. Both analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approaches.

Interference alignment in cognitive radio networks

A fast algorithm to perform interference alignment (IA) in a cognitive radio network is proposed. Here, the authors consider a network consisting of multiple primary users (PUs) and secondary users (SUs). Although the PUs are cooperating through IA and their rates are maximised by water-filling algorithm, in the secondary network, the authors try to choose the precoding matrices of the SUs such that the interferences at the primary receivers are aligned away from the desired subspaces of the primary receivers. Besides, the interference cancellation of the PUs on the secondary links is considered through designing the post-processing matrices for the secondary links. In this way, their mutual harmful effects are suppressed and SUs could transmit their information simultaneously on the same frequency or time without causing/receiving any interference to/from the primary links. Meanwhile, the feasibility condition for the secondary network regarding the mentioned constraints is investigated. In addition, the rates of the secondary links are maximised by water-filling algorithm. The proposed iterative algorithm is an improved version of minimum weighted leakage interference algorithm with a much faster convergence rate. The analytical results are confirmed through simulations.

General precoder interference alignment design with achievable higher multiplexing gain and reduced channel extension cases

In a K-user single input-single output interference channel, it is proved that the upper bound for multiplexing gain (MG) is K/2. Based on interference alignment technique, Cadambe and Jafar introduced a scheme known as Original Interference Alignment (IA). This scheme is improved by Choi-Jafar-Chung (CJC) in which for reduced channel extension, higher MG is achievable. These designs requirean infinite number of channel extension to achieve the upper bound. In this study, as a common generalisation of Original IA and CJC, the authors focus on designing new precoding matrices. With the same conditions as in Original IA and CJC, by changing the values of defined variables (t and s), different cases could be generated so that different MGs with different channel extensions become possible. Broadly speaking, setting appropriate values to the assigned variables, the proposed scheme yields the same results as Original IA and CJC schemes. For all other values of t and s parameters better results than Original IA are obtained but for some special t and s parameters better results than CJC scheme are achieved. Thus, it is possible to simultaneously achieve a higher MG with lower channel extension (i.e. the reduction of computational complexity) in comparison with previously designed schemes.

Practical linear precoder design for finite alphabet multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with experiment validation

A low complexity precoding method is proposed for practical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Based on the two-step optimal precoder design algorithm that maximises the lower bound of the mutual information with finite-alphabet inputs, the proposed method simplifies the precoder design by fixing the right singular vectors of the precoder matrix, eliminating the iterative optimisation between the two steps, and discretising the search space of the power allocation vector. For a 4 x 4 channel, the computational complexity of the proposed precoder design is reduced to 3 and 6% of that required by the original two-step algorithm with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 8 phase-shift keying (8PSK), respectively. The proposed method achieves nearly the same mutual information as the two-step iterative algorithm for a large range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, especially for large MIMO size and/or high constellation systems. The proposed precoding design method is applied to a 2 x 2 MIMO-OFDM system with 2048 subcarriers by designing 1024 precoders for extended channel matrices of size 4 x 4. A transceiver test bed implements these precoding matrices in comparison with other existing precoding schemes. Indoor experiments are conducted for fixed-platform non-line-of-sight channels, and the data processing results show that the proposed precoding method achieves the lowest bit error rate compared with maximum diversity, classic water-filling and channel diagonalisation methods.

In the precoding matrices of the best-known multi-user Tomlinson-Harashima precoder, only the sum of noise powers of all users is used;information on the individual users' powers is thus under-utilised. A method is proposed to take into account the individual noise powers of users in the precoding matrices for system-wise performance optimisation, while users' noise powers may not be explicitly fedback to save uplink bandwidth.

Statistically robust transceiver design algorithms for relay aided multiple-input multiple-output interference systems

In this study, the authors consider robust transceiver design for amplify-and-forward relay aided multiple-input multiple-output interference systems assuming direct transmitter-receiver links and imperfect channel state information (CSI). The imperfect CSI of each link consists of the estimated channel and the covariance matrix of the channel estimation error. The authors address two transceiver optimisation problems: one is minimising the sum of averaged mean squared error (MSE) at all the receivers and the other is minimising the maximum averaged MSE among all the receivers, both of which are subject to power constraints at the transmitter and relay nodes. The formulated sum-MSE minimisation and max-MSE minimisation based optimisation problems are non-convex with matrix variables and therefore a globally optimal solution is difficult to obtain. To solve these non-convex optimisation problems, they develop sub-optimal iterative algorithms based on alternating minimisation approach to jointly optimise the precoding matrices at the transmitter and relay nodes and the receiver filter matrices. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and their improved performance against CSI uncertainties at similar computational cost as the existing non-robust designs.

We consider a multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) cellular network in which each base station (BS) can control its radiation pattern and transmission power to its serving users by adjusting its precoding matrices. Under a cooperative network between BSs, we propose a two-step procedure to minimize the total power consumption of the whole network while every user is guaranteed to be served with at least target data rate. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed procedure have good performance and fast convergence.

This paper considers the Softcast joint source-channel video coding scheme for data transmission over parallel channels with different power constraints and noise characteristics, typical in DSL or PLT channels. To minimize the mean square error at receiver, an optimal precoding matrix design problem has to be solved, which requires the solution of an inverse eigenvalue problem. Such solution is taken from the MIMO channel precoder design literature. Alternative suboptimal precoding matrices are also proposed and analyzed, showing the efficiency of the optimal precoding matrix within Softcast, which provides gains increasing with the encoded video quality.

This paper presents an efficient construction of two-dimensional (2D) complete complementary codes (CCCs) for their modern application as omnidirectional precoding matrices in massive MIMO systems to attain enhanced cell coverage. Unlike the traditional 1D CCCs, little progress has been made on efficient and systematic constructions of the 2D counterpart. In contrast to the existing recursive constructions with the aid of various sequence operations, certain 1D seed sequences or 2D arrays, we propose to use 2D generalized Boolean functions for direct synthesis of 2D CCCs. Simulation results show that the proposed 2D CCCs appear to be good candidates for precoding matrices to achieve omnidirectional transmission in massive MIMO systems.

This paper proposes a precoding scheme for downlink multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed precoding employs the minimum bit error rate (BER) criterion and estimates precoding matrices to minimize total BER of mobile stations by the steepest descent algorithm. As the cost function of the proposed scheme, an upper bound of the total BER is derived from the pairwise error probability (PEP) and is averaged with respect to channel state information (CSI) errors. Thus, the proposed scheme can be robust to imperfect CSI. Computer simulations under a frequency-selective fading condition demonstrate that the proposed precoder is more robust to the CSI errors than the zero-forcing (ZF) precoder, and that it is superior in BER to the conventional scheme.
