AN EXTRAPOLATIVE-INTERPOLATIVE prediction coding METHOD FOR HDTV SIGNALS

Abstract-This paper describes a high efficiency coding method for digital transmission of HDTV (high definition television) signals. Be- cause of the wide bandwidth of HDTV signals, there are two major problems. One is that HDTV signals have more random noise than conventional TV signals, which causes coding efficiency degradation. The other is that very high sampling frequencies are required. This restricts the hardware implementation of the coding algorithm. There- fore, two techniques are introduced to solve these problems. The first is a spatio-temporal adaptive filter that can reduce random noise and improve coding efficiency. The second is an extrapolativeand interpola- tive coding algorithm with adaptive intrafield/interframe prediction. This algorithm eliminates the problem caused by the high sampling frequencies and provides efficientcoding performance. A computer simulation is carried out to estimate the coding perfor- mance. Based on the simulation results, experimental coder hardware is implemented for 1125 line/60 Hz HDTV signals in order to evaluate real-timecodingperformance. The experimentalresultsshowed that this coding method can provide good picture quality at around 90 or 135 Mb/s, and that HDTV digital transmission is very promising at the broad-bandISDN H, rate.

Using first-order prediction coding to compress the data that collected by sensor nodes can bring down redundant information and greatly reduce the amount of data transmission in network The simulation results show that compressing data by improved prediction coding can reduce energy consumption significantly and prolong the whole lifetime of wireless sensor network.

This paper presents a new one-dimensional cellular automata (CA) approach to parallelly generate the prediction coding for lossless data compression. The local functions of CA, parallel algorithm and its implementation structure to generate the desired predictive coding are discussed. The properties of the proposed CA, including the convergency' complexity and correctness are given. The proposed CA approach has advantages in terms of encoding speed, parallelism, scalability, simplicity, and easy hardware implementation over other sequential lossless compression methods.

Lossless video coding is required in the fields of archiving and editing digital cinema or digital broadcasting contents. This paper combines a discrete wavelet transform and adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction in the wavelet transform domain to create multiresolution lossless video coding. Based on the image statistics of the wavelet transform domains in successive frames, inter/intra frame adaptive prediction is applied to the appropriate wavelet transform domain. This adaptation offers superior compression performance. A progressive transmission scheme is also proposed for effective resolution scalability. Experiments on test sequences confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Lossless video coding is required in the fields of archiving and editing digital cinema or digital broadcasting contents. This paper proposes multiresolution lossless video coding using a discrete wavelet transform and adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction in the wavelet domain. The multiresolution structure based on the wavelet transform facilitates interchange among several video source formats such as Super High Definition (SHD) images, HDTV, SDTV, and mobile applications. In order to increase the compression ratio, and to keep the computational cost low, the adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction is performed in the lowest wavelet transform domain. The adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction can adapt to changes in the local inter/intra-frame statistics. Experiments on digital cinema test, sequences confirm effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

HEVC is the latest block-based video compression standard, outperforming H.264/AVC by 50% bitrate savings for the same perceptual quality. An HEVC encoder provides Rate-Distortion optimization coding tools for block-wise compression. Because of complexity limitations, Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) is usually performed independently for each block, assuming coding efficiency losses to be negligible. In this paper, we propose an acceleration solution for the Intra coding scheme named Dual-JRDO, which takes advantage of Inter-Block dependencies related to both predictive coding and CABAC. The Dual-JRDO improves Intra coding efficiency at the expense of higher computational complexity. The acceleration of the Dual-JRDO scheme includes adaptive use of the Dual-JRDO model based on source analysis, short-listing and early decisions strategies. The proposed Fast Dual-JRDO reduces the original model complexity by 89.54%, while providing tractable computation for average R-D gains of -0.45% (up to -0.82%) in the HM16.12 reference software model.

Whenever multibeam satellite systems target very aggressive frequency reuse in their coverage area, inter-beam interference becomes the major obstacle for increasing the overall system throughput. As a matter of fact, users located at the beam edges suffer from very large interference for even a moderately aggressive planning of reuse-2. Although solutions for inter-beam interference management have been investigated at the satellite terminal, it turns out that the performance improvement does not justify the increased terminal complexity and cost. In this article, we pay attention to interference mitigation techniques that take place at the transmitter (i.e., the gateway). Based on this understanding, we provide our vision on advanced precoding techniques and user clustering methods for multibeam broadband fixed satellite communications. We also discuss practical challenges to deploy precoding schemes and the support introduced in the recently published DVB-S2X standard. Future challenges for novel configurations employing precoding are also provided.

Precoding for multiple-input multiple-output systems with space-time block coding over correlated Rician fading channels

Based on the asymptotic analysis in spatially correlated Rician fading channel, the precoders for space-time block-coded multiple-input multiple-output system at high and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are, respectively, designed to minimise the system bit error rate (BER). The precoding for high SNR provides closed-form positive power allocation by using the Langrage optimisation method, and has the BER performance close to that of the optimal scheme, especially at high SNR. The Langrage multiplier does exist and is unique, and practical Newton's method is proposed to find its optimal value. Moreover, it has a closed-form solution for some special cases. Thus, it avoids the iterative calculation of some existing precoding schemes. The precoding for low SNR has a closed-form solution similar to onedirectional (1-D) beamforming, and can obtain the performance very close to that of the optimal scheme at low SNR. By combining the above two schemes, a simple and effective suboptimal precoding scheme can be achieved for different SNRs. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme derived from the integration of high and low SNR can provide BER lower than the equal power precoding, and obtain the BER performance close to that of the existing optimal scheme with low complexity.

An equivalent partial-response (PR) channel 1 - Z(-k) arises in the envisioned terrestrial over-the-air broadcasting of digital high definition television (HDTV) signals when a comb filter is used by an HDTV receiver to reduce the NTSC cochannel interference. In this paper, we consider the design of signal constellations and their associated precoders for this PR channel. Besides PAM and square QAM, we show that generalized square and hexagonal constellations can also be used here. Coded modulation and graceful degradation in the received signal quality are discussed. The results are extended to a more general PR channel 1 - SIGMA(i=1)J c(i)Z(-i) with integer coefficients c(i).

Lattice reduction is a powerful concept for solving diverse problems involving point lattices. Signal processing applications where lattice reduction has been successfully used include global positioning system (GPS), frequency estimation, color space estimation in JPEG pictures, and particularly data detection and precoding in wireless communication systems. In this article, we first provide some background on point lattices and then give a tutorial-style introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of lattice reduction. We describe the most important lattice reduction algorithms and comment on their performance and computational complexity.
