The robust linear transceiver design for the more general model of multicell MIMO downlink system with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is discussed in this paper. Our aim is to minimize the total power of the network while the quality of service (QoS) in terms of mean-square error (MSE) for every user should be strictly guaranteed for every channel realization in the uncertain region. The optimization problem is troublesome due to infinite nonconvex MSE constraints. To handle this, we propose an iterative algorithm that performs optimization alternatively by switching between the precoders and decoders. The two subproblems in the algorithm can be recast as semideiinite programming (SDP) problems which can be efficiently solved. Finally, simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can provide guaranteed QoS for users and outperforms single cell designs especially in serious inter-cell interference (ICI) scenario.

In future wireless communication systems, more and more small low-power mobile devices will communicate without infrastructure and internet access. In order to provide a lightweight yet powerful security mechanism, physical layer parameters can be used to generate secret keys for perfect secrecy. In this paper, we study the optimal operation of a multiple antenna link with statistical channel state information at all nodes for secret key generation. The impact of spatial correlation on the achievable secret key rates is characterized. Furthermore, the optimal pilot precoding during channel estimation is computed. Numerical simulations illustrate the results for selected scenarios.

In this paper, we consider a distributed MIMO communication network in which multiple transmitters cooperatively send common messages to a single receiver. In this scenario, it is usually costly to acquire full channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT), i.e., every transmitter perfectly knows the overall channel state information (CSI) of the network. Hence, we assume individual CSIT (I-CSIT), i.e., each transmitter only knows its own CSI. We propose a novel precoding technique, named Hermitian precoding, to enhance the system performance under the constraint of I-CSIT. We show that the proposed scheme can perform close to the system capacity with full CSIT. This reveals that the amount of CSI required at the transmitters can be significantly reduced without considerably compromising performance.

We investigate the interfering channel estimation in radar and communication coexistence, where a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) radar is operated in a "search and track" mode, and a MIMO base station (BS) is attempting to acquire the interfering channel state information (ICSI) between them, which is required for the precoding designs. In contrast to conventional training based techniques, we exploit radar probing waveforms as pilot signals, which requires no coordination between the systems. As the radar randomly transmits searching and tracking waveforms, it is challenging for the BS to directly obtain the ICSI. We therefore propose a Rao test approach to firstly identify the working mode of the radar, and then estimate the channel. We further provide theoretical performance analysis for the Rao detector. Finally, we assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach by numerical simulations, which show that the BS is able to estimate the ICSI with limited information from the radar.

We investigate zero-forcing and unitary precoding for multi-user MIMO in the downlink of a multi-cell network. By considering additional aspects, such as realistic link adaptation, the associated block errors and retransmissions, robustness to uncertainty in interference, and the computation of receive filters, we complement and extend existing results on the topic. To support our theoretical considerations, an excessive simulation campaign has been performed using an LTE-Advanced system-level simulator and the key results are presented in this paper. Our conclusion is that unitary precoding may be competitive to zero-forcing in some scenarios, while being less complex and having less overhead. The presented simulation results are reproducible and extendable because the complete source code is provided online under a GPL license.

We address the issue of interference in co-channel heterogeneous cellular networks where low-power pico cells are overlaid on high-power macro cells. Interestingly, unlike homogeneous networks, the co-channel heterogeneous networks exhibit special interference characteristics. This stems due to the transmit power mismatch in macro and pico layers. Interference alignment is one of the techniques that has been proposed to manage the interference in homogeneous macro cellular networks. Hence it is important to analyse the impact of power mismatch on interference alignment in the heterogeneous networks. For this purpose, we assess the performance of multi user inter cell interference alignment based transmit precoding scheme with different user selection methods in a heterogeneous network scenario. The results for pico cells show that the interference alignment based transmit precoding is well supported by the alignment based user selection method. Additionally, we compare the performance of alignment based transmit precoding with the state of the art non-alignment based precodings. We find that interference alignment is more robust to the power mismatch than its non-alignment based counterparts. This suggests that interference alignment can also be exploited as interference management scheme in co-channel heterogeneous networks.

Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission is a general method for mitigating the inter-cell interference in a cellular network through the use of multi-user precoding across neighboring basestations. In this paper, we investigate the system performance of MMSE-based multi-user precoding in a cellular network with CoMP transmission. An iterative algorithm that exploits the duality between the downlink broadcast channel and the uplink multi-access channel is used to compute the multi-user precoding matrices. The algorithm uses the knowledge of the channel error covariance during the precoder computation to alleviate the impact of channel uncertainty at the network. We simulate the system performance of various MMSE-based precoders under the CoMP setting using a realistic MIMO channel model and compare them with those of the zero-forcing precoders. We show that the error-compensated MMSE precoder is more robust towards channel uncertainty and can significantly outperform zero-forcing precoding at high loads.

We propose a method for optimizing the information theoretic secure goodput of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) degraded wiretap channel using inverse precoding. We evaluate the secrecy capacity of this method in terms of secure goodput under various aspects using a standard fading massive MIMO system under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter for the legitimate channel and no CSI at the transmitter for the eavesdropper channel. The precoding scheme optimizes two parameters, the number of compromised streams and the channel advantage of the legitimate receiver. The resulting secure goodput can be specialized to massive MIMO or optical channels with single or multiple eavesdroppers. We include a numerical analysis of the secure goodput for a multi-mode fiber (MMF) optical channel to demonstrate the flexibility of our approach.

In a two-tier heterogeneous network with shared spectrum, the cross-tier interference and co-tier interference significantly affect the network performance. In this paper, we investigate a cascaded precoding scheme in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems to protect macro-cell user equipments (MUEs) from the interference caused by co-located small cells and at the same time to satisfy the quality-of-service (QoS) requirement of small-cell user equipments (SUEs). An outer precoder ensures that the signals intended for the SUEs are orthogonal to the MUEs thus avoids the cross-tier interference from the second tier. Moreover, optimal power allocation through an inner precoder at each small base station (SBS) yields better performance of the SUEs and guarantees their QoS requirement. Considering the dense deployment of SBSs, we further propose an SBS selection algorithm to reduce the computational complexity of our scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the cascaded precoding structure is effective in mitigating the interference and enhancing the capacity of small cells.

A new hybrid predictive coding scheme for lossy data compression is introduced and studied here. The proposed technique attempts to improve the compression performance of a conventional adaptive predictive coder through three levels of prediction. The first level estimates and removes a time-varying mean signal. The second level uses DFT and IDFT to estimate and remove the predictable high frequency subband component of the signal, whereas the third level performs the adaptive predictive coding of the smoothed signal. The resultant residual is then quantized using an adaptive quantizer with 3 and 5 levels. Experimental results based on a group of test signals seem to indicate that the proposed hybrid scheme can improve the lossy compression achievable using a conventional adaptive predictive coder.
