Applying 6-100 GHz spectrum to mobile communications is a promising topic in 5G. In this paper, a hybrid network is presented where LTE system at low frequency works for seamless coverage and a mmWave system at 72 GHz works in hotspots for capacity enhancement. The scheme for the hybrid network includes: 1) frame structure and OFDM-based numerology for 72 GHz;2) time-space beam switching method for beamforming;3) zero-forcing MIMO precoding for interference cancellation;4) a channel model based on measurements in [1] for simulation. System-level simulations show that the hybrid network can achieve the system throughput over 1600 times higher than that in 2 GHz frequency band in case of two streams. MIMO precoding is not mandatory for capacity enhancements because the effect of intra-cell interference is not severe. Thus, 72 GHz is a promising spectrum band that can well meet 5G requirements from the aspects of capacity and maximum data rate.

Hybrid precoding is a cost-effective approach to support directional transmissions for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. While existing works on hybrid precoding mainly focus on single-user single-carrier transmission, in practice multicarrier transmission is needed to combat the much increased bandwidth, and multiuser MIMO can provide additional spatial multiplexing gains. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid precoding structure for multiuser OFDM mmWave systems, which greatly simplifies the hybrid precoder design and is able to approach the performance of the fully digital precoder. In particular, two groups of phase shifters are combined to map the signals from radio frequency (RF) chains to antennas. Then an effective hybrid precoding algorithm based on alternating minimization (AltMin) is proposed, which will alternately optimize the digital and analog precoders. A major algorithmic innovation is a LASSO formulation for the analog precoder, which yields computationally efficient algorithms. Simulation results will show the performance gain of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, it will reveal that canceling the interuser interference is critical in multiuser OFDM hybrid precoding systems.

We employ an adaptive space-polarization MIMO testbed to investigate the energy efficiency of different adaptive precoded MIMO architectures, including co-polarized MIMO (CP-MIMO), dual-polarized MIMO (DP-MIMO), and space-polarization MIMO (SP-MIMO) architectures. The analysis quantifies the relative energy efficiencies and achievable rates when precoding is used. The performance is investigated over different polarization-sensitive channels and includes the impact of packet erasures. The adaptive precoding analysis relies on accurate and repeatable physical channel realizations from the testbed, which demands sophisticated hardware and testbed calibration procedures. Examples results from the testbed are presented, illustrating the relative energy efficiencies among the different MIMO architectures.

This work proposes a per-subband multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoder selection technique for point-to-point MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based bit interleave coded modulation (BICM) systems with the soft-output minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver. Given a pre-designed precoder codebook, the codeword/precoder that maximizes the mean of the mutual information per coded bit (MMIB) on all subcarriers within a subband is selected. The main advantages of this technique are the following: i) the precoder selection metric is explicitly related to BICM performance, thus it outperforms the previously proposed precoding techniques;ii) with commonly used unitary precoding codebooks, this technique works for an arbitrary number of transmit streams unlike the minimum singular value based method which does not work when the number of input streams is the same as the number of transmit antennas;iii) when multiple packets are transmitted and one precoder is used for these transmitted packets, an algorithm that combines the MMIB of each packet is proposed using an upper bound on the average packet error rate.

Well-known standard hybrid coding techniques utilize the concept of motion-compensated predictive coding in a closed-loop. The resulting coding dependencies are a major challenge for packet-based networks like the Internet. On the other hand, subband coding techniques avoid the dependencies of predictive coding and are able to generate video streams that better match packet-based networks. An interesting class for subband coding is the so-called motion-compensated orthogonal transform. It generates orthogonal subband coefficients for arbitrary underlying motion fields. In this paper, a theoretical signal model based on Gaussian distributions is discussed to construct a cost function for efficient rate allocation. Additionally, a rate-distortion efficient video coding scheme is developed that takes advantage of motion-compensated orthogonal transforms. The scheme combines multiple types of motion-compensated orthogonal transforms, variable block sizes, and half-pel accurate motion compensation. The experimental results show that this adaptive scheme outperforms individual motion-compensated orthogonal transforms by up to 2 dB.

In this paper we consider simplified greedy user scheduling algorithms for clustered network multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with successive zero-forcing (SZF) precoding. The optimal user scheduling involves an exhaustive search, which is very complex. Among various suboptimal but lower complexity algorithms, greedy algorithms with heuristic scheduling metrics have been shown to achieve performance close to the exhaustive search. In this paper, we propose two simplified algorithms: interference-aware greedy user scheduling (IA-GUS) and interference-whitening greedy user scheduling (IW-GUS). IA-GUS schedules the users based on the information on interference power of the selected users in surrounding cooperating clusters, and IW-GUS schedules the users based on the information on whitened channels of all users requesting the service in the cluster. IA-GUS has lower complexity and performs better than IW-GUS. Simplified metrics for proportionally fair (PF) scheduling are also proposed. Performance of the proposed algorithms is analyzed and compared with dirty paper coding (DPC), block diagonalization (BD) and systems without network coordination. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms for SZF achieve much higher outage capacity compared to BD with previously proposed algorithms.

Chunked codes are a variation of random linear network codes with low computational complexities. In chunked codes, the packets in a file are grouped into small (non-overlapped or overlapped) chunks, and random linear encoding operations are performed within each chunk. Previous studies show that when the chunk size is lower bounded by some increasing function of the file length, chunked codes asymptotically achieve the min-cut capacity. However, in most real applications, the chunk size is required to be a small constant due to the computational constraints of network devices. In this case, it remains unknown which rates can be achieved by chunked codes. In this paper, we address the analysis and design of chunked codes with fixed constant chunk sizes. We first highlight the importance of precoding for chunked codes to achieve constant rates, and then present an analysis of non-overlapped chunked (NOC) codes with precoding. We further introduce a new class of chunked codes, called EOC codes, which are based on expander graphs to form overlapped chunks. Numerical and simulation results show that EOC codes achieve significantly higher rates than NOC codes, and also outperform other state-of-the-art overlapped chunked codes.

In-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is one of the most important hardware impairments in communication systems. It arises in the analog parts of direct conversion radio frequency (RF) transceivers and can cause large performance losses. In this paper, the impact of I/Q imbalance on the sum rate performance of downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is analyzed and I/Q imbalance aware widely-linear precoding is considered. The proposed precoder is a widely-linear (WL) extension of the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoder and jointly mitigates multi-user interference and I/Q imbalance by processing the real and the imaginary parts of the transmit signal separately. Results from random matrix theory are used to derive analytical expressions for the achievable sum rate of the proposed precoder. Our analytical results show that if the number of base station antennas is much larger than the number of users, the proposed I/Q imbalance aware WL-RZF precoder achieves the same sum rate as the RZF precoder in an ideal system without I/Q imbalance. We also provide an analytical expression for the sum rate loss of the I/Q imbalance unaware RZF precoder compared to the ideal case without I/Q imbalance.

In this paper, we study multi-user multi-input-multioutput (MU-MIMO) wireless system for spectrum sharing over a limited bandwidth, in which transmit covariance matrices of the coexisting users independently updated in an iterative manner for individual rate maximization. This problem was solved in the literature by an advanced decoding method, in which every user opportunistically cancels the co-channel interference from the coexisting users using multiuser detection techniques, hence termed opportunistic multiuser detection (OMD). This paper also studies the signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) based precoding for MU-MIMO channels based on OMD. SLNR improves as interference mitigates due to use of precoding in OMD. Simulation results show the achievable throughput gains of precoded OMD over the conventional single-user decoding (SUD) and plain OMD.

MIMO precoding matches the transmission to channel conditions in order to reduce or eliminate interference at the receiver. In this paper, we are interested in the case where the receiver is also equipped with a linear processor, specifically a ZF filter. We analyze the effect of the ZF receive filter on the performance of a variety of MIMO precoders. It is shown that receive-side ZF equalization can remove the error floors that sometimes appear with regularized zero-forcing precoding and matched-filter precoding.
