This paper investigates the application and performance improvement of MIMO Space Time Block coding (STBC) for Physical Layer Security. The paper analyzes a Precoder Matrix Index (PMI) based scheme called Private Random Pre-coding (PRP). Key-based Physical Layer Security protects against eavesdroppers in wireless communication links, invaluable in emerging SG and IoT networks. This paper derives improvements in PRP based on STBC. Also presented are simulation results which show as much as 7 dB improvement in Key bit Error Rate performance vs SINR of the enhanced PRP-STBC scheme for a 1-bit codebook at the cost of decreased transmission rate. In addition, the paper derives a closed form expression for the Key bit Error Rate for both the PRP and enhanced PRP-STBC schemes as a function of dense SG cellular geometries. Furthermore, we present the effective information rate of the PRP key based communication framework in low SNR scenarios.

In this paper, we study an indoor visible light communication (VLC) downlink system with multiple LED fixtures and multiple single-photodiode users. We assume that VLC transmission over a subset of fixtures can be coordinated through a power line communication backbone network. Hence, we have a multiple-input VLC system, for which we derive the optimal linear precoding transmitter according to the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) criterion. Different from similar problems in RF wireless communication, we need to take constraints resulting from the LED linearity region and its use as an illumination device into account. Since the precoder design requires channel knowledge at the transmitter, usually provided through a low-rate RF or infrared feedback channel, we further extend our derivations to the practically relevant case of imperfect channel estimation. Numerical results for VLC with different system parameters are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed transmitter designs.

Distributed coding of correlated sources with memory poses a number of considerable challenges that threaten practical applications, particularly (but not only) in the context of sensor networks. This problem is strongly motivated by the obvious observation that most common sources exhibit temporal correlations that may be at least as important as spatial or inter-source correlations. This paper presents an analysis of the underlying tradeoffs, paradigms for coding systems, and approaches for distributed predictive coder design optimization. Motivated by practical limitations on both complexity and delay (especially for dense sensor networks) the focus here is on predictive coding. From the source coding perspective, the most basic tradeoff (and difficulty) is due to conflicts that arise between distributed coding and prediction, wherein 'standard' distributed quantization of the prediction errors, if coupled with imposition of zero decoder drift, would drastically compromise the predictor performance and hence the ability to exploit temporal correlations. Another challenge arises from instabilities in the design of closed loop predictors, whose impact has been observed in the past, but is greatly exacerbated in the case of distributed coding. The main contribution focuses on the tradeoffs encountered within a more general paradigm where decoder drift is allowable or unavoidable, and must be effectively accounted for and controlled. We briefly review our earlier results on which we build to derive an overall design optimization method that avoids the pitfalls of naive distributed predictive quantization and produces an optimized low complexity and low delay coding system.

We present a simple transmit precoding scheme which exploits the delayed interference state information (INTSI) and the concept of interference alignment (IA). We design the precoding such that the inter-cell interference subspace from the previous transmission is aligned at the desired receiver with the intra-cell interference subspace of current transmission. Due to this fact, the alignment is not perfect for current transmission and causes leakage interference in the desired signal space. However, we show that with the help of proper receiver design, we can minimize this leakage interference and get substantial gains. We also consider the practical limitations of the current receivers and provide a modified solution to overcome these limits. With the help of extensive system level simulations we compare our scheme with other baseline MU-MIMO transmit precoding schemes in terms of mean user rates. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides considerable gains over the baseline transmission schemes. © 2012 University of Split.

In this paper, we consider multiple-pair communication in massive MIMO relay network, wherein K single antenna source nodes deliver their messages to the corresponding K single antenna destination nodes with the help of one relay provisioned with N(N >> K) antenna array. And the energy efficient multiple-pair communication in Massive MIMO relay network through the precoding at both sources and relay is addressed. It is shown that, given the channel state information at the source nodes and the relay, the zero-forcing precoding at all source nodes, the zero-forcing reception and zero-forcing transmission (ZFR/ZFT) or the zero-forcing reception and maximum ratio transmission (ZFR/MRT) at relay can be employed to mitigate inter-pair interference. The asymptotical analysis shows that, the required transmit power at relay can be made inversely proportional to the number of relay antennas without sacrificing the achieved energy efficiency. And the optimal power allocation problem is further formulated to address the power allocation design at all source nodes and the relay according to the large-scale fading for a better energy efficiency, when fulfilling some predefined sum rate performance requirements.

Simple Statistical Analysis of the Impact of Some Nonidealities in Downstream VDSL with Linear Precoding

This paper considers a VDSL downstream system where crosstalk is compensated by linear precoding. Starting from a recently introduced mathematical model for FEXT channels, simple analytical methods are derived for evaluating the average bit rates achievable, taking into account three of the most important nonidealities. First, absolute and relative estimation errors in the crosstalk coefficients are discussed, and explicit formulas are obtained to express their impact. A simple approach is presented for computing the maximum line length where linear precoding overcomes the noncoordinate system. Then, the effect of out-of-domain crosstalk is analyzed. Finally, quantization errors in precoding coefficients are considered. We show that by the assumption of a midtread quantization law with different thresholds, a relatively small number of quantization bits is sufficient, thus reducing the implementation complexity. The presented formulas allow to quantify the impact of practical impairments and give a useful tool to design engineers and service providers to have a first estimation of the performance achievable in a specified scenario.

Distributed Cooperative Precoding with Power Control for Cellular Systems with Correlated Antennas at the Receiver

We consider the problem of cooperative precoding working alongside an antenna power allocation algorithm in the downlink of a correlated Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) interference channel. An analytical model for the multicell, multiuser system with receiver-side correlation is analyzed for a realistic system configuration having two antennas each at the basestation and user terminal. Based on the precoder choices of the different terminals and the per-antenna power levels requested, a criterion is proposed for maximizing the received SINR of a severely interference-limited cell-boundary user, while controlling the loss in performance of high-SINR in-cell users in the system. A distributed protocol for cooperation amongst the base stations is also proposed. System performance gains measured in terms of mean and cell-edge spectral efficiency values are provided using numerical simulations. An improvement of about 28% to the mean spectral efficiency and 115% to the cell-edge spectral efficiency is reported over single-cell beamforming. We also demonstrate that terminals with high receive-side correlation form a specific use case of this algorithm. With two antennas at the receiver and 0.9 correlation factor, an improvement of 37% in the mean spectral efficiency is reported. The proposed technique takes into account practical constraints such as limiting to a modest level the information exchanged from the user equipments to the serving base station and amongst the base stations.

The current paper considers the joint precoding and transmit antenna selection to reduce hardware cost, such as radio-frequency chains, associated with antennas in the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems with limited feedback. The joint precoding and transmit antenna selection algorithm requires an exhaustive search of all possible combinations and permutations to find the optimum solution at the transmitter, thus resulting in extremely high computational complexity. To reduce the computational load while still maximizing channel capacity, the cross-entropy (CE) method is adopted to determine the suboptimum solution. Compared with the conventional genetic algorithm and random search method, the CE method provides better performance under the same computational complexity, as shown by the simulation results.

This paper demonstrates two methods which simultaneously undertake synchronization and ranging based on a time-of-arrival approach with bidirectional communication to bypass the need for accurate synchronous clocking. In order to alleviate multipath effects, Tomlinson-Harashima precoding and UWB signaling are used to measure the distance between pairs of sensors. Optimal Multiuser Zero Forcing with Per-Antenna Power Constraints for Network MIMO Coordination

We consider a multicell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) coordinated downlink transmission, also known as network MIMO, under per-antenna power constraints. We investigate a simple multiuser zero-forcing (ZF) linear precoding technique known as block diagonalization (BD) for network MIMO. The optimal form of BD with per-antenna power constraints is proposed. It involves a novel approach of optimizing the precoding matrices over the entire null space of other users' transmissions. An iterative gradient descent method is derived by solving the dual of the throughput maximization problem, which finds the optimal precoding matrices globally and efficiently. The comprehensive simulations illustrate several network MIMO coordination advantages when the optimal BD scheme is used. Its achievable throughput is compared with the capacity region obtained through the recently established duality concept under per-antenna power constraints.
