Conventional uni-polarized multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna systems offer the advantages of higher data rate and higher reliability through the use of spatial multiplexing and space-time coding, respectively. However, the cost and space constraints have led to the use of dual-polarized MIMO antenna systems where two spatially separated uni-polarized antennas are replaced by a single antenna element employing orthogonal polarizations, thereby exploiting polarization diversity. The advantages of dual polarized antennas can be further exploited by the use of precoding at the transmitter which leads to reduced complexity at the receiver for downlink communications, when compared to the conventional multi-user detectors. In this paper, we propose a singular value decomposition based precoding-aided dual-polarized MIMO system and compare its performance with the conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) based approach for mitigating co-channel interference in a multi-cell environment consisting of flat Rayleigh fading channels. Our performance results reveal that the precoding-aided dual-polarized MIMO system outperforms the conventional MMSE detection scheme and offers appreciable gain in symbol energy-to-noise ratio performance.

While the theoretical multiplexing gains of multiuser (MU) MIMO are substantial, the performance gains in practical systems such as IEEE 802.11ac and LTE/LTE-Advanced have been limited. One of the key limiting factors are spatially correlated user channels. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of pattern reconfigurable antennas (PRA) on downlink MU-MIMO transmission. PRAs are capable of dynamically adjusting their radiation pattern, providing an additional degree of freedom that can be leveraged to improve MU-MIMO performance by treating the array configuration and radiation characteristics as additional components in the joint optimization of adaptive system parameters. We conduct measurements in a statistically repeatable environment and demonstrate the gains provided by pattern diversity in decorrelating user channels. Our experimental results show significant gains in SINR and achievable sum rates of MU-MIMO linear precoders when appropriate directional beams are used to decorrelate the channel matrices and provide directional gain.

This paper focuses on linear precoding designs in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output block diagonalization (BD) relay systems with limited feedback. A base station employs spatial multiplexing transmission based on quantized channel state information (CSI) obtained from a relay. Then the relay transmits the received signal to users equipped with multiple antennas. In this paper, we propose a BD precoding scheme based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion, which results in a closed-form solution. We show that the proposed scheme is robust to both noise and channel uncertainties caused by quantization errors. Also, we extend the proposed scheme to the case with CSI feedback delays. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

This paper proposes a cognitive architecture for sensory processing of multimodal data. The cognitive architectures, referred to as Deep Predictive coding Networks (DPCN) were first used to model video streams. Here we use DPCNs with two input sources, for example: video and speech recordings. We train DPCNs as generative models of both sensors. Since we constrain the network to have a single hidden code for both inputs, we name the proposed architecture as Multimodal DPCN (MDPCN). Experimental results show that the "parallel" flow between the two sensory modes increases the interclass separability achieved by unsupervised clustering. We validate the proposed method with a multimodal classification task using part of the VIDTIMIT dataset.

We study the precoding for the high-rank MIMO in the LTE-A Pro systems. Unlike the low-rank precoding, layer mapping has a relatively large impact on the performance for high-rank precoding. First, we construct a model on the relationship between layer mapping and precoding. Then we derive the system throughput with the resulting model, so that the performance of the layer mapping and precoding can be evaluated. Further, we operate a sub-space optimization for the codebook-based precoding to maximize the system throughput. Simulation results show that after optimizing layer mapping, high-rank precoding achieves much better performance.

In millimeter-wave (mm-wave) cellular systems, beamforming antennas are necessary at both the base station (BS) and mobile station (MS) to compensate for high attenuation in mm-wave frequency bands and to extend the transmission range. In space-division multiple access (SDMA) systems, the challenge is the inter-beam interference (IBI) caused by adjacent beams that are formed by the BS in the same cell and BSs in neighboring cells. The beams that are formed toward MSs in each cell may generate significant interference to MSs in neighboring cells, especially for MSs at the cell boundary. In this paper, we propose four different digital precoding techniques (Type-1, Type-2, Type-3, and Type-4) to reduce IBI in mm-wave cellular systems with a hybrid beamformer.

Recent wireless radio technologies have utilized precoding matrix and rank adaptation as a technique to increase frequency efficiency. In 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE) and LTE-advanced (LTE-A) systems, codebook based precoding is utilized. In the codebook based system, a mobile station (MS) needs to estimate optimum channel state information (CSI) which includes a channel quality indicator (CQI), a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) and rank indicator (RI) and to feed back the CSI to the base station (BS) in order to get higher frequency efficiency. Generally, the MS estimates the optimum precoding matrix from all possible precoding matrices which are predefined as the codebook. When such an exhaustive search algorithm is utilized in LTE-A MS, the MS needs huge computation power because the number of rank and precoding matrix patterns is large in a LTE-A system. In this paper, we propose a novel PMI/RI selection algorithm which is less complex than the exhaustive search algorithm in a LTE-A system. After evaluating the throughput performances by simulation and analyzing the computations, it is described that the proposed algorithm has the same throughput performances as the conventional algorithm and 13% of the computations compared with the conventional algorithm.

For Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with frequency selective fading channels, Bit-Interleaved Coded Multiple Beamforming (BICMB) with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) can offer both spatial and multipath diversity, making it an important technique. It was proved that full diversity of BICMB-OFDM can be achieved with a condition of R_cSL ≤ 1, where R_c, S, and L are the code rate, the number of parallel streams at each subcarrier, and the number of channel taps, respectively. In this paper, the precoding technique is applied to overcome the full diversity restriction with the minimum achievable decoding complexity.

A fixed-throughput vector precoding (VP) approach specially suitable for hardware implementation in field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices is presented in this paper. The algorithm, which is based on the sphere encoder (SE), is divided into two main stages: at the preprocessing stage, the columns of the precoding matrix are ordered following any of the ordering approaches that have been proposed in this paper. Secondly, the search tree is configured so as to yield an appropriate bit error rate (BER) performance. Simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that of the SE, whereas its complexity is significantly smaller.

In data-dependent superimposed training (DDST) scheme, the data-induced interference in channel estimation is eliminated at the sacrifice of data distortion. Unfortunately, data distortion causes data identification problem (DIP) for DDST scheme, which results in error floor phenomenon in bit error rate (BER). Although some literatures have analyzed the DIP, the DIP is still an open problem without solution. In this work, we firstly review the data identification problem from the view of sub-space. The analysis result inspires us to introduce a precoding matrix for resolving the DIP in DDST scheme. In order to prevent the advantages in DDST scheme being reduced by the precoding matrix, we introduce several constraints on the precoding matrix. Subsequently, we derive the requirement of the precoding matrix for solving the DIP in DDST system by using singular value decomposition. Furthermore, an appropriate precoding matrix is developed based on Zadoff-Chu sequence, which is shown to satisfy all conditions derived in this work. Finally, simulation results are conducted to verify that the precoding matrix removes the error floor in BER for DDST scheme.
