In this study, an adaptive and variable-rate feedback reduction technique for partitioned vector quantization (P-VQ) in MU-MISO downlink precoding is proposed. Independent feedback reduction is performed for both channel quality indicator (CQI) and channel direction indicator (CDI) over slowly-varying Rayleigh channel. The users adaptively reduce the feedback overhead for quantized channel state information (CSI) depending on the rate and direction of change in the correlated CQIs and CDIs. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme greatly lessens the communication overhead with very small performance loss and enhances the quantization efficiency.

This paper proposes an open-loop correlation reduction precoding scheme for overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In overloaded MIMO-OFDM systems, frequency diversity through joint maximum likelihood (ML) decoding suppresses performance degradation owing to spatial signal multiplexing. However, on a line-of-sight (LOS) channel, a channel matrix may have a large correlation between coded symbols transmitted on separate subcarriers. The correlation reduces the frequency diversity gain and deteriorates the signal separation capability. Thus, in the proposed scheme, open-loop precoding in order to reduce the correlation between codewords transmitted on different signal streams is employed at the transmitter of an overloaded MIMO system. The proposed precoding scheme changes the amplitude as well as the phase of the coded symbols transmitted on different subcarriers. Numerical results obtained through computer simulation show that the proposed scheme improves the bit error rate performance on Rician channels.

Conventional video coding uses motion estimation to perform adaptive linear predictive encoding. Wyner-Ziv coding does not use predictive coding but performs motion estimation at the decoder. Recent work uses a difference signal at the encoder to estimate the prediction quality at the decoder. In this paper, we recognise that this operation constitutes a step in the motion estimation process. We exploit this information by omitting suitable blocks, effectively implementing linear predictive coding with deadzone quantisation for parts of the input signal. This modified Wyner-Ziv coding results in large bitrate reductions as well as significant decoding complexity decrease. At certain bitrates, our modified Wyner-Ziv codec outperforms conventional hybrid coding in an I-B-I-B setup.

In this paper, we propose a new edge model for edge adaptive graph-based transforms (EA-GBTs) in video compression. In particular, we consider step and ramp edge models to design graphs used for defining transforms, and compare their performance on coding intra and inter predicted residual blocks. In order to reduce the signaling overhead of block-adaptive coding, a new edge coding method is introduced for the ramp model. Our experimental results show that the proposed methods outperform classical DCT-based encoding and that ramp edge models provide better performance than step edge models for intra predicted residuals.

Human brain has been used as an inspiration for building autonomous agents, but it is not obvious what level of computational description of the brain one should use. This has led to overly opinionated symbolic approaches and overly unstructured connectionist approaches. We propose that using homeostasis as the computational description provides a good compromise. Similar to how physiological homeostasis is the regulation of certain homeostatic variables, cognition can be interpreted as the regulation of certain 'cognitive homeostatic variables'. We present an outline of a Cognitive Homeostatic Agent, built as a hierarchy of physiological and cognitive homeostatic subsystems and describe structures and processes to guide future exploration. We expect this to be a fruitful line of investigation towards building sophisticated artificial agents that can act flexibly in complex environments, and produce behaviors indicating planning, thinking and feelings.

Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) is a nonlinear processing technique employed at the transmit side to implement the concept of dirty paper coding (DPC). The application of THP is restricted by the dimensionality constraint that the number of transmit antennas has to be greater or equal to the total number of receive antennas. In this paper, we propose an iterative coordinate THP algorithm for overloaded scenarios in which the total number of receive antennas is larger than the number of transmit antennas. The proposed algorithm is implemented on two types of THP structures, the decentralized THP (dTHP) with diagonal weighted filters at the receivers of the users, and the centralized THP (cTHP) with diagonal weighted filter at the transmitter. Simulation results show that a significantly better bit error rate (BER) and sum-rate performances can be achieved by the proposed iterative coordinate THP algorithm as compared to previously reported techniques.

In this paper, a statistically robust precoder design is presented for space-time coded multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) relay networks over double correlated Rician channels. We assume both the source and destination terminals are equipped with multiple-antenna, while a single antenna is used in distributed non-regenerative relay nodes for reducing feedback overhead and processing burden on relays. The precoding matrix at the source terminal and amplifying parameters of relay nodes are optimized to maximize the total signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination assuming only statistical channel state information (CSI) available at the transmission sides. The optimization problem can be efficiently solved by an iterative method, resulting in a single-beam mode source precoder and diagonal precoding matrix for relay nodes. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the equal power allocation scheme and existing method with single antenna nodes.

We propose a decentralized algorithm for weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization via large system analysis. The rate maximization problem is done via weighted sum mean-squared error (WSMSE) minimization. Decentralized processing relies on the exchange via a backhaul link of a low amount of information. The inter-cell interference terms couple the maximization problems at the different base stations (BS)s. Large system approximations are used to replace the inter-cell interference terms and to decouple the problems. We demonstrate that the approximates depend only on the slow fading terms or second order statistics of the channels. Then, each BS computes the transmit precoders to serve its own user equipments (UE)s locally. No feedback channels from the UEs to the serving BSs will be required.

We present a new means of implementing distributed space-time block codes (STBC) for wireless amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. In the proposed method, each source antenna transmits one column of an STBC matrix derived from a generalized complex orthogonal design (GCOD). Such designs were originally intended for single hop environments. At each relay antenna, a precoding matrix and a fixed gain amplification factor are applied before the resulting signal is forwarded to the next set of nodes. The precoding operation at the relays rearranges the elements of the received vector in such a way that the equivalent STBC code observed at the destination is quasi-orthogonal. The characteristics and one structure for the precoding matrices are proposed. Initially, a dual hop system is considered for convenience. We then demonstrate how the scheme can be readily extended to multihop networks. We refer to this type of relay system as the transform-and-forward scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the technique over an existing approach.

In this paper, we propose a joint transceiver design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems employing single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). We first derive the optimal minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) frequency-domain linear equalization filter at the destination and the associated stream-wise MSEs at the output of the equalizer. Subsequently, we optimize the source and relay precoding matrices for various optimality criteria by minimizing a general function of the MSEs subject to separate source and relay power constraints. The structures of the optimal source and relay precoding matrices are obtained in closed form and the remaining power allocation problems are solved using an alternating optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed SC-FDE designs out-perform orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing based MIMO relay systems in terms of both uncoded and coded bit error rate.
