In this paper, a partial channel state information (CSI) based robust Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) transceiver is proposed in downlink time division duplexing (TDD) multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. Partial CSI is obtained only based on the observations of uplink pilot training. Our robust THP transceiver includes THP matrices and a Demodulation Reference Signal (DMRS) precoding matrix. By minimizing the mean square error of the received signal at the user equipment (UE) side, robust THP matrices can be optimized at the BS. The optimized robust THP receiving matrices are transmitted to the UEs by DMRS. Based on the optimized THP matrices, DMRS precoder is also designed with partial CSI to make sure that the UEs can recover the receiving matrices as precise as possible. Simulation results show that our proposed THP transceiver is robust to both the partial CSI and the imperfect receiving matrices.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has the potential to substantially improve the spectral efficiency, robustness and coverage of mobile networks. However, such potential is limited by hardware cost and power consumption associated with a large number of RF chains. Recently, one-bit quantization is proposed to address this issue by replacing high-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with one-bit DACs, thereby simplifying the RF chains. Despite low system cost, advanced signal processing techniques are needed to compensate for quantization distortions caused by low-resolution DACs. In this paper, a symbol-error-rate (SER)-based one-bit precoding scheme is proposed to minimize the detection error probability of all users under one-bit constraints. The problem is recast as a continuous optimization problem with a biconvex objective. By applying the block coordinate descent (BCD) method and the FISTA method, we develop an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a one-bit precoding solution. Simulation results demonstrate its superiority over state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of bit error rate performance in high-order modulation cases.

This paper considers hybrid beamforming (HBF) for a downlink multiuser millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. For this system, we propose a signal-to-leakage-and-noise (SLNR) based HBF algorithm. In this algorithm, we first consider jointly designing the analog precoder and combiner to maximize the RF chain gain between the BS and each user. Then, the digital precoder is designed with the aim at maximizing SLNR, when the analog precoder and combiner are fixed. This optimization problem can be further equivalent to generalized eigenvalue problem, and the optimal digital precoding vector for each stream can be obtained one by one by using generalized Rayleigh-Ritz quotient. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms, and are extremely close to the hypothetical single-user (no interference) case.

We propose a method for optimizing the information theoretic secure goodput of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) degraded wiretap channel using inverse precoding. We evaluate the secrecy capacity of this method in terms of secure goodput under various aspects using a standard fading massive MIMO system under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter for the legitimate channel and no CSI at the transmitter for the eavesdropper channel. The precoding scheme optimizes two parameters, the number of compromised streams and the channel advantage of the legitimate receiver. The resulting secure goodput can be specialized to massive MIMO or optical channels with single or multiple eavesdroppers. We include a numerical analysis of the secure goodput for a multi-mode fiber (MMF) optical channel to demonstrate the flexibility of our approach.

Orthogonal superimposed training design for doubly selective channel estimation using basis expansion models

In this paper, we consider channel estimation for single-carrier block transmission over doubly selective fading channel, where basis expansion models are used to describe the time-varying channel. The affine precoding model is used as the transmission strategy, wherein the training sequence is added on the top of the precoded data prior to transmission. By enforcing a special form of orthogonality between training sequence and precoded matrix, we propose orthogonal superimposed training design for doubly selective channel that makes channel estimation decouple from symbol detection, and then the affine precoding model based on orthogonal polyphase sequence set is designed under the orthogonal conditions. To further improve the estimation performance, we exploited a joint iterative approach is used, where the detected symbols, to enhance the estimation performance. Simulations results show that the proposed scheme can yield better detection performance than the data-dependent superimposed training and can be competitive with time-multiplexed training scheme with higher bandwidth efficiency.

Whenever multibeam satellite systems target very aggressive frequency reuse in their coverage area, inter-beam interference becomes the major obstacle for increasing the overall system throughput. As a matter of fact, users located at the beam edges suffer from very large interference for even a moderately aggressive planning of reuse-2. Although solutions for inter-beam interference management have been investigated at the satellite terminal, it turns out that the performance improvement does not justify the increased terminal complexity and cost. In this article, we pay attention to interference mitigation techniques that take place at the transmitter (i.e., the gateway). Based on this understanding, we provide our vision on advanced precoding techniques and user clustering methods for multibeam broadband fixed satellite communications. We also discuss practical challenges to deploy precoding schemes and the support introduced in the recently published DVB-S2X standard. Future challenges for novel configurations employing precoding are also provided.

The combination of baseband and analog precoding for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is considered in this paper which is referred to as hybrid precoding. The system capacity, as a design criterion, is maximized subject to unit modulus constraints on the elements of the analog precoder (phase shifters), and a total power constraint. This is a non-convex problem due to the product of the analog and baseband precoder variables. The proposed technique suggests computing non-trivial complex derivatives of the objective and constraints, analytically, in order to develop an iterative gradient-based sequential optimization algorithm to solve the non-convex problem. Promising simulation results show that the solution of the proposed algorithm is sufficiently close to the optimal (full-baseband) precoder solution, regardless of the channel characteristics.

In this paper, equalization and precoding in multiuser multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) relaying systems are considered. In particular, the user devices are connected to relays or small base stations which only cover small areas, socalled small cells. Via wireless backhaul, the relays are in turn connected to a central base station, forming a two-hop multiuser relaying system. It is shown how a naive realization of these relaying systems provokes a diversity bottleneck in the small cells, degrading the overall system performance. A strategy to prevent this bottleneck is proposed in combination with an antenna selection strategy for backhaul communication. Results obtained from numerical simulations are provided to complement the theoretical considerations. To this end, lattice-reduction-aided schemes are used to enable a full-diversity channel equalization.

Sidelobe suppression has always been an important part of crafting communications signals to keep interference with users of adjacent spectrum to a minimum. Systems based on the discrete Fourier transform, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) are especially prone to out-of-band power leakage. Although many techniques have been proposed to suppress sidelobes in DFT-based systems, a satisfactory balance between computational complexity and out-of-band power leakage has remained elusive. Orthogonal precoding is a promising, linear technique in which the nullspace of a precoding matrix with orthonormal columns is designed to suppress the sidelobes. In particular, Xu and Chen [1], van de Beek [2] and Ma et al. [3] have proposed orthogonal precoders that yield excellent out-of-band suppression. However, they suffer from high arithmetic complexity-quadratic in the number of active subcarriers-which has limited their application. In this paper, we find that the arithmetic complexity can be made linear instead of quadratic if a block reflector is used to perform the precoding instead of an otherwise unstructured unitary transformation. There is no penalty to be paid in achieved bit-error rate. We show by numerical simulation that the penalty in peak-to-average power ratio is also very small for OFDM.

In this paper, we develop a new codebook design method for multi-resolution codebook based two-stage precoding scheme in massive MIMO networks in frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. A narrow-beam generated by each codeword is intended to provide coverage over certain beam range with strict constraints on the average and the variation in the radiated power. Each narrow-beam or codeword is designed based on a new performance metric, the ratio of the expected average power within the coverage beam range to that outside the beam range, i.e., beam-to-leakage ratio (BLR). An optimization problem for narrow-beam design is formulated to maximize the BLR. The codebook is generated via solving the optimization problem. Based on numerical evaluation, our novel codebook design based transmission scheme can improve the overall network throughput compared with the DFT-based and covariance based method when the angular spread of the channel is relative large or when the channel is rich scattering.
