On the multi-antenna broadcast channel, Space division multiple access (SDMA) extracts the multiplexing gain by transmiting multiuser packets simultaneously to maximize the system throughtput. This paper considers a practical design called per user unitary and rate control ((PURC)-R-2) in order to achieve the multi-user diversity (MUDiv) for SDMA with the reasonable feedback burden. However, (PURC)-R-2/OFDMA needs to feedback the preferred precoding index and its CQIs per resource unit, chunk. Moreover, it has a defect in scheduling the streams using user grouping and is difficult to achieve MUDiv fully. In order to overcome these drawbacks, we employ transmitter controlled precoding and opportunistic feedback (TCP-OFB) in conjunction with frequency scheduling for single-user and multi-user allocation. Numerical results shows that the proposed scheme achieves comparable performance of conventional (PURC)-R-2/OFDMA with a far reduced feedback load in any user allocation and antenna correlation scenarios.

A large scale antenna system (LSAS) entails a large number of base station (BS) antennas serving a much smaller number of terminals. LSAS demonstrates large gain in spectral-efficiency and energy-efficiency compared with conventional MIMO schemes. In the regime of infinite number of BS antennas, the performance of LSAS can be improved unboundedly by using a multi-cell cooperation method called pilot contamination precoding (PCP). As the number of BS antennas grows PCP completely cancels inter-cell interference resulted from unavoidable use of nonorthogonal pilot sequences in neighboring cells. In this paper, we consider downlink PCP design in the finite antenna regime, where besides pilot contamination, three other types of interference become prominent. We formulate the PCP design as maximizing the minimum signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) subject to network sum power constraint. We propose optimal and simple suboptimal algorithms for finding PCP matrices. We show that in a practical scenario, say with M = 100 antennas, these approaches give very significant improvement over conventional LSASs.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive linear precoding technique combined with low complexity iterative detection which can significantly improve the performance of spatial multiplexing multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) systems. By allowing different data stream mappings to the transmit antennas, linear precoding techniques can provide full diversity and increased capacity gain, assuming maximum likelihood (ML) detection is used. There has been previous work on selection criteria to select the appropriate precoding matrix to perform the stream mapping, based on ML or minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection. However these selection criteria were designed under uncoded conditions. In this paper we present a selection criterion based on the Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart specifically designed for a reduced complexity iteratively detected coded system with interference cancellation detection. The results show that the detector maintains full diversity and has performance within 0.4 dB of the ML detector. Moreover precoding increases performance by 1.2 dB compared to the ML detector with fixed stream mapping. In addition it outperforms the SNR criterion from previous work.

Broadband power line communication (BPLC) is a promising technology for indoor broadband communication networks. However, BPLC has restricted transmission power in the very high frequency (VHF) band in order to avoid harmful interference to existing wireless services. In this paper, a new hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is proposed between BPLC and TV white space (TVWS) channels to enhance the system capacity over BPLC in VHF. In order to satisfy the interference limit at the TV primary user (PU) receiver (Rx), an iterative precoding algorithm is proposed to enhance the overall ergodic capacity. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid system over the previous cognitive BPLC system.

Physical layer network coding is able to improve frequency utilization efficiency in bi-directional wireless communications via a relay. This paper proposes a novel error correction scheme for physical layer XOR network coding. The proposed scheme not only improves transmission performance but also to reduce complexity at the relay. The proposed scheme applies a unitary precoding to offset phase rotation in the channel by exploiting the reciprocity between channels in the uplink and the downlink in systems with time division duplex (TDD). Moreover, a novel complexity reduced maximum likelihood detection technique is applied in the proposed scheme. It is evaluated by computer simulation that the proposed scheme attains a gain of 8dB at BER=10(-5) compared with AF network coding in a system with the use of OFDM.

A two-hop multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay scenario is analyzed in this paper, where the main design challenge resides on the selection of the interdependent precoding and relaying matrices. After analyzing the optimal joint iterative linear design of the precoding and relaying matrices, two simpler non-iterative approaches are proposed and derived: hop-by-hop minimum mean squared error (MMSE) minimization and block diagonal geometric mean decomposition (BD-GMD). The combination of these two techniques and vector precoding (VP) is then proposed to greatly improve the performance of the systems. Provided simulation results prove that the combination of non-linear precoding and simpler matrix design strategies can outperform the optimal and complex joint iterative design with linear transmission.

Long range underwater acoustic communications are challenging since this channel is severely band limited, time varying, and has a long delay spread. A linear turbo equalizer is a good candidate for communicating over this channel, because it achieves a high level of spectral efficiency with a realizable complexity. As the channel is FIR, the convergence of the turbo equalizer is improved by recursive precoding of the signal before transmission. In this paper, we present a scheme for receiving a precoded transmission using a linear equalizer. Also, experimental results demonstrating high data rates achieved via precoding for long range underwater acoustic communications are presented.

Base station cooperation is a very promising technique for reducing inter-cell interference and enhancing spectral efficiency in next generation cellular systems. However, imperfect precoding at the base stations is limiting the potential gains. In this paper, we present a downlink signal model with impaired zero-forcing precoding and analyze self-user signal and inter-user interference. Properties of Wishart-distributed random matrices are used for calculating the average inverse eigenvalues. We provide closed-form expressions for signal to interference ratio (SIR) bounds, which are found inversely proportional to the mean square error of the base station's channel knowledge. Further, it is found that the SIR increases with the ratio of number of base stations to number of users. Numerical evaluation agrees with analytical results.

In this paper, we consider the feedback and precoding designs for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Based on a recently introduced two-stage beamforming framework, termed as joint spatial division and multiplexing (JSDM), we propose a generalized JSDM approach to deal with the practical issue that the user's channel usually has multiple scattering clusters for mobile broadband which may incur significant performance degradation with original JSDM. In particular, we propose a new feedback approach where the users feed back additional channel measurements, referred to as inter-group channel state information (CSI) feedback. To utilize the inter-group CSI, we first provide the joint group precoding (JGP) approaches, then propose a novel virtual user based low-complexity per-group precoding (PGP) method with interference avoidance. Finally, we explore a general PGP approach with power allocations for interference management. Simulation results show that the spectral efficiency is significantly improved with proposed designs.

This paper proposes a differential codebook-based method to reduce the feedback overhead for closed-loop MIMO-OFDM systems. With the assumed multimode transmit precoding, both the number of data streams (rank) and the index of precoding matrix are fed back to the transmitter at each sub-band. By exploiting the channel correlation in frequency domain, an enhanced differential codebook (a subset of the whole codebook) is proposed in this paper. Two methods are developed to predetermine the differential codebook through either joint transition probability or code distance. Simulations and hardware experiment results verify the significantly reduced signaling overhead with ignorable performance degradation.
