In this paper we show the implementation of the concept of Proactivity applied as the core mechanism in our proactive Context Aware System (PCAS), which is capable to detect and extract the related events of interest from the user's contextual situation and to provide the appropriate goal-oriented actions to this event with the objective to help or assist the user or the group of users. We have chosen the academic environment as the ongoing contextual setting for our system. From this perspective, we designed proactive Scenarios for an automatic and enhanced management of the online learning and teaching activities on Moodle (TM) for both student and teacher users. Due to the diversity of the potential contexts and situations arising from the user's activity, we developed two kinds of proactive Scenarios. The first type or Meta Scenarios are responsible for capturing the changes in the outward context. The second type or Target Scenarios are triggered off by Meta Scenarios and aim to undertake the appropriate actions in response to the conditions of the user's contextual situation. In order to test and validate the capability of our software as well as to analyse its context related outcomes we have performed empirical studies. The experiments consisted in creating two groups of students, on the one hand the study group, which used the Moodle (TM) platform enhanced by PCAS, and on the other hand the control group, which used the standard version of Moodle (TM). The subsequent data analysis showed significant differences in specific related results such as notable advantage of the study group outcomes in the category of passing the final exam, where the study group has performed by 11 percentage points better than the control group.

In the following paper we present the work in progress, which aims to validate through theoretical and empirical study the probabilistic side of proactive computing. We choose the cognitive modelling methodology as an approach to implement the probabilistic inference of user's cognitive states during online activity. We create four cognitive models, which simulate various cognitive states of a user during the task of online search of medical terminology. Additionally, we elaborate several potential scenarios, which may take place during the given task, and we associate these scenarios with our models as the integral elements of the proactive system behaviour. Ultimately, by applying the rules of the Bayesian statistics, we envision to test the principles of proactive computing in the frame of probabilistic approach.

UbiDSS: a proactive intelligent decision support system as an expert system deploying ubiquitous computing technologies

Many industries have deployed expert systems (ESs) to provide support for solving complicated and specialized problems since 1980. Because ESs are originally designed for generating feasible alternatives in an automated manner, users, especially decision makers, expect ESs to make decisions proactively and intelligently by automatically detecting users' contextual data. In other words, decision makers require decision support systems (DSSs) to be reinforced with proactive and intelligent ESs that can utilize contextual data. Meanwhile, ubiquitous technology-based applications currently only provide limited personalization services that use the user's context and preferences;in other words, these systems do not fully make use of sophisticated decision making capabilities. Hence, this paper describes how decision making and context-aware computing are jointly used to establish ubiquitous computing technology-based applications. To do so, we propose an amended DSS paradigm, Context-Knowledge-Dialogue-Data-ModeI (CKDDM). This model describes what may be considered for future DSSs when we regard ubiquitous computing technology as an inevitable effect that changes how decision making decisions are described. Under the CKDDM paradigm, a framework of ubiquitous decision support systems (ubiDSS) is addressed with the description of the subsystems within. To show the feasibility of ubiDSS, a prototype system, Context-Aware Multi Agent System-My Optimization (CAMAmyOpt) has been implemented as an illustrative example system. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Making effective decisions often depends on having the right information at the right time. Decision support systems were originally designed to help decision makers by automating some of the decision process. Today's decision support systems should take this a step further: making decisions proactively and intelligently by automatically detecting users' contextual data. Context-aware technology-based applications currently only provide limited personalization services that reference the user's context and preferences;these systems do not fully make use of sophisticated decision making capabilities. Hence, this paper describes how decision making and context-aware computing are jointly used to establish context-aware intelligent decision support systems. To incorporate these capabilities, we address a framework of context-aware intelligent intelligent decision support systems (CAIDSS), with the description of the subsystems within. The paper discusses new approaches to the management of urban areas. The concept of exoactive management is proposed. The "Functional Reactor" model of exoactive management is described. The components of the regulatory block of such a model are considered in detail. The concept of proactive planning is introduced. The approach to building decision-making support systems based on proactive urban computing is described to put the proposed concept into practice. The approach includes representing the tasks of urban management as active agents. The tasks of collecting and evaluating information about ongoing events as part of a comprehensive real-time monitoring of urban processes are considered. Problem solving in the transport system management is given as an example of the application of the proposed DMSS and proactive urban computing methodology.

In this paper, we introduce a new kind of software tools intended to offer a virtual educational and/or training environment online: proactive e-Learning Management Systems. These computational intelligence based systems are designed to improve the users' online (inter)actions by providing programmable, automatic and continuous intelligent analyses of the users' behaviors, augmented with appropriate actions initiated by the LMS itself. We show how we implemented the proactive part of our LMS on the basis of a dynamic rules-based expert system. We also sketch how it looks like from a user's point of view. Finally, We give some examples of intelligent analysis of users' behaviors coded into proactive rules.

The increasing use of sensors in manufacturing enterprises has led to the need for real-time data-driven information systems capable of processing huge amounts of data in order to provide meaningful insights about the actual and the predicted business performance. We propose a framework for real-time, event-driven proactive supplier selection driven by Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). The proposed framework was tested in a real in automotive lighting equipment scenario.

Most of today's Augmented Reality (AR) systems operate as passive information browsers relying on a finite and deterministic world model and a predefined hardware and software infrastructure. We propose an AR framework that dynamically and proactively exploits hitherto unknown applications and hardware devices, and adapts the appearance of the user interface to persistently stored and accumulated user preferences. Our framework explores proactive computing, multi-user interface adaptation, and user interface migration. We employ mobile and autonomous agents embodied by real and virtual objects as an interface and interaction metaphor, where agent bodies are able to opportunistically migrate between multiple AR applications and computing platforms to best match the needs of the current application context. We present two pilot applications to illustrate design concepts.

Many applications, such its disaster response and military applications, call for proactive maintenance of links and routes in Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) to ensure low latency during data delivery. The goal of this paper is to minimize the wastage of energy in the network Clue to high control traffic, which restricts the scalability and applicability of such protocols, without trading-off the low latency. We categorize the proactive protocols based on the periodic route and link maintenance operations performed;and analytically derive the optimum periods for these operations in different protocol classes. The analysis takes into account data traffic intensity, link dynamics, application reliability requirement, and the size of the network. The proposed optimization significantly reduces the control traffic for low data traffic intensity in the network and increases protocol scalability for large networks without compromising the low latency of proactive protocols.

A motivation behind much UbiComp research has been to make our lives convenient, comfortable and informed, following in the footsteps of Weiser's calm computing vision. Three themes that have dominated are context awareness, ambient intelligence and monitoring/tracking. While these avenues of research have been fruitful their accomplishments do not match up to anything like Weiser's world. This paper discusses why this is so and argues that is time for a change of direction in the field. An alternative agenda is outlined that focuses on engaging rather than calming people. Humans are very resourceful at exploiting their environments and extending their capabilities using existing strategies and tools. I describe how pervasive technologies can be added to the mix, outlining three areas of practice where there is much potential for professionals and laypeople alike to combine, adapt and use them in creative and constructive ways.
