This paper describes the functionality and software architecture of a generic problem-solving environment (PSE) for collaborative computational science and engineering, A PSE is designed to provide transparent access to heterogeneous distributed computing resources, and is intended to enhance research productivity by making it easier to construct, run, and analyze the results of computer simulations, Although implementation details are not discussed in depth, the role of software technologies such as CORBA, Java, and XML is outlined, An XML-based component model is presented, The main features of a Visual Component Composition environment for software development, and an Intelligent Resource Management System for scheduling components, are described. This work describes the Site-Specific System Simulator for Wireless System Design ((SW)-W-4), a problem-solving environment (PSE) that integrates visualization and computational tools with a high-level graphical user interface. (SW)-W-4 improves the ability of wireless system engineers to design an indoor wireless system by encouraging them to think in terms of designing the system for optimal performance. Issues of computation management, data management, and location of resources are hidden from the user. The complex nature of data sets in the domain of wireless simulations calls for a customized set of visualization tools. Therefore, a number of ad hoc visualizations were developed for (SW)-W-4. A study comparing the integrated system with an earlier, unintegrated version is presented. This helps to demonstrate the productivity gains that a PSE provides. (C) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ecce - a problem-solving environment's evolution toward Grid services and a Web architecture

The Extensible Computational Chemistry environment (Ecce), an innovative problem-solving environment, was designed a decade ago, before the emergence of the Web and Grid computing services. In this paper, we briefly examine the original Ecce architecture and discuss how it is evolving to incorporate both Grid services and components of the Web to increase its range of services, reduce deployment and maintenance costs, and reach a wider audience. We show that Ecce operates in both Grid and non-Grid environments, an important consideration given Ecce's broad range of uses and user community, and discuss the strategies for loosely coupled components that make this possible. Both in-progress work and conceptual plans for how Ecce will evolve are presented. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

A Grid-enabled problem-solving environment for advanced reservoir uncertainty analysis

Uncertainty analysis is critical for conducting reservoir performance prediction. However, it is challenging because it relies on (1) massive modeling-related. geographically distributed, terabyte, or even petabyte scale data sets (geoscience and engineering data), (2) needs to rapidly perforin hundreds or thousands of flow simulations, being identical runs with different models calculating the impacts of various uncertainty factors, (3) an integrated, secure, and easy-to-use problem-solving toolkit to assist uncertainty analysis. We leverage Grid computing technologies to address these challenges. We design and implement in integrated problem-solving environment ResGrid to effectively improve reservoir uncertainty analysis. The ResGrid consists of data management, execution management, and a Grid portal. Data Grid tools, such as metadata, replica, and transfer services', are used to meet massive size and geographically distributed characteristics of data sets. Workflow, task farming, and resource allocation are used to support large-scale computation. A Grid portal integrates the data management and the computation solution into a unified easy-to-use interface, enabling reservoir engineers to specify uncertainty factors of interest and perform large-scale reservoir studies through a web browser. This paper presents a problem-solving framework based on robust evolutionary search in GRID computing environment. Our problem-solving environment called virtual innovative laboratory performs simulator programs in parallel and optimize their input parameters employing a competent evolutionary algorithm with gene analysis. The objective of our project is to replace a part of human designer's try-and-error processes by a parallel and robust evolutionary search on GRID computing systems.

During the 1990s and first decade of the 2000s, problem-solving environments (PSEs) were a topic of research among a community with the vision to create software systems "with all of the computational facilities necessary to solve a target class of problems."Use of the term has since declined, with fewer papers focused on core PSE research topics. What happened Did we achieve the design vision for PSEs through other means-namely computational notebooks-or is there more to do In this essay, we explore the history and objectives of PSE research, the rise of computational notebooks, whether they achieve these objectives, and why the time is right to renew our PSE research efforts. © 2023 ACM.

Integrated support for medical image analysis methods: From development to clinical application

Computer-aided image analysis is becoming increasingly important to efficiently and safely handle large amounts of high-resolution images generated by advanced medical imaging devices. The development of medical image analysis (MIA) software with the required properties for clinical application, however, is difficult and labor-intensive. Such development should be supported by systems providing scalable computational capacity and storage space, as well as information management facilities. This paper describes the properties of distributed systems to support and facilitate the development, evaluation, and clinical application of MIA methods. First, the main characteristics of existing systems are presented. Then, the phases in a method's lifecycle are analyzed (development, parameter optimization, evaluation, clinical routine), identifying the types of users, tasks, and related computational issues. A scenario is described where all tasks are performed with the aid of computational tools integrated into an ideal supporting environment. The requirements for this environment are described, proposing a grid-oriented paradigm that emphasizes virtual collaboration among users, pieces of software, and devices distributed among geographically dispersed healthcare, research, and development enterprises. Finally, the characteristics of the existing systems are analyzed according to these requirements. The proposed requirements offer a useful framework to evaluate, compare, and improve the existing systems that support MIA development.

In this article, the authors introduce a Grid-based virtual reactor, a High Level Architecture (HLA)supported problem-solving environment that allows for detailed numerical study of industrial thin-film production in plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) reactors. They briefly describe the physics and chemistry underpinning the deposition process, the numerical approach to simulate these processes on advanced computer architectures, and the associated software environment supporting computational experiments. The authors built an efficient problem-solving environment for scientists studying PECVD processes and end users working in the chemical industry and validated the resulting virtual reactor against real experiments.

GSiB: PSE infrastructure for dynamic service-oriented Grid applications

This paper describes the Grid-Service-in-a-Box (GSiB) system-a visual environment for both service providers and service clients who wish to deploy, manage, and use services in a Grid environment, without having to be experts in Grid and Web service technologies. GSiB provides a variety of easy-to-use graphical user interfaces for service providers to deploy, undeploy, update, compose, and monitor services. In addition, service clients can generate service-composite applications, and track and monitor submitted jobs. This paper describes these interfaces and several implementation issues are addressed. An example service-based application is presented to illustrate how a workflow can be used to generate and execute an application on Grid infrastructure. (c) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
