Developing real life problem-solving skills through situational design: a pilot study

Current problem-solving research has advanced our understanding of the problem-solving process but has provided little advice on how to teach problem-solving skills. In addition, literature reveals that individual difference is an essential issue in problem-solving skills instruction but has been rarely addressed in current research. Building upon information-processing theory, this article proposes an instructional design model, namely the situational design model, which serves as an approach to accommodate individual difference in problem-solving skills instruction. This design model was further examined with a pilot study in an introductory technology course and results showed a significant difference in students' academic performance and problem-solving skills, especially the non-recurrent skills. The proposed situational design model contributes to research and practice by providing a novel lens to explore problem-solving skills and assisting in the design of instruction that aims to develop student's expertise in solving real world problems.

The purpose of the current research was to develop integrated problem-based learning and predict, observe, explain (PBL-POE) model to empower students' problem-solving skills, including the students' ability to identify problems, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and evaluate the results. This research and development were carried out following the four stages of the 4D model (define, design, develop, and disseminate). Instruments used were a syllabus, lesson plans, students' worksheets, validation sheets, a questionnaire to collect students' responses towards the learning model, and an essay test to evaluate students' problem-solving skills. According to experts, the integrated PBL-POE model was valid (3.86). The N-gain score was used to examine the effectiveness of the learning model in empowering students' problem-solving skills. A significant increase was observed in the students' pretest and post-test scores (37.67 and 93.24, respectively;g=0.8;g>0.7). The overall response of the students to the learning model fell into the excellent category. Based on these findings, it thus suggests that the integrated PBL-POE model can be used to empower students' problem-solving skills.

Informed integration of IWB technology, incorporated with exposure to varied mathematics problem-solving skills: its effect on students? real-time emotions

Technology has an inseparable role in contemporary educational systems. Recent demands consider its informed integration in classrooms. The current study aims to investigate whether informed use of Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) technologies affects students? real-time emotions in mathematics classes, through an integrative research model that combines two components: varying levels of technology integration and varied levels of problem-solving skills. Participants included 64 sixth-grade students who were assigned to one of two comparison groups who have been progressively exposed to different implementations of the research model. The study used a real-time judgment of emotions scale, and a reflective questionnaire. Findings indicate that when being exposed to informed IWB integration, more positive emotions arose in real-time during learning;specifically, toward understanding-performance, and when being required to demonstrate applying problem-solving skills. The study provides a holistic view that reinforces the interplay between the two components of the integrative research model, particularly as it supports the advantage of an informed IWB technology integration in a way that most successfully incorporated with the cognitive demand required from students.

This study aims to determine the feasibility of the Student Activity Sheet with authentic inquiry learning approach based on the results of the expert judgment assessment and also the students' responses as well as to determine the improvement of problem-solving skills. This research is a development research (R&D) with a 4-D (four-D) model. The stages of this research included to define, design and develop. Research subjects were the experts, science teachers, and students of class VIII B of SMPN 14 Yogyakarta. The research instruments used were the Student Activity Sheet of expert and teacher validation instrument, students' responses instrument, problem-solving skills observation sheets, and problem-solving skills pretest-posttest. The analytical techniques used included the average score to determine the actual score, the conversion of scores into four categories, the calculation of the percentage of mastery of problem-solving skills and the gain score of the mastery of problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the Student Activity Sheet was developed and considered very good by experts and teachers as well as suitable for use in natural sciences learning. (2) The students gave very good responses to the Natural Sciences Subject Student Activity Sheet with authentic inquiry learning approach from the results of development, (3) the improvement of students' problem-solving skills in Natural Sciences learning with authentic inquiry learning gained an increase of 17.8% and the gain score of 0.74 which is included in the "high" category.

This study was designed to examine the relationships between problem-solving skills, hardiness, and perceived stress and to test the moderating role of hardiness in the relationship between problem-solving skills and perceived stress among 500 undergraduates from Malaysian public universities. The analyses showed that undergraduates with poor problem-solving confidence, external personal control of emotion, and approach-avoidance style were more likely to report perceived stress. Hardiness moderated the relationships between problem-solving skills and perceived stress. These findings reinforce the importance of moderating role of hardiness as an influencing factor that explains how problem-solving skills affect perceived stress among undergraduates.

A study examining the effects of a training program focused on problem-solving skills for young adults

There is widespread recognition that 21st century skills are important for youth to develop in a fast-changing digital era. The current study examined the effectiveness of an 8-week out-of-school program targeted to develop youth's problem-solving skills. A quasi-experimental design with an experimental (n = 25;M-age = 23.54) and comparison group (n = 32;M-age = 25.63) and repeatedly measured outcomes was applied. Furthermore, outcomes were assessed by three different sources, namely self, direct observer, and rater. Results suggest that youth's problem-solving skills, particularly when measured by others, improved after program participation. However, using self-report measures, there was lack of evidence that problem-solving skills improved through program participation. Conceptual and practical implications with regards to the results are discussed.

Effects of the problem-Posing Approach on Students' problem solving skills and Metacognitive Awareness in Science Education

The interrelationship between mathematics and science education has frequently been emphasized, and common goals and approaches have often been adopted between disciplines. Improving students' problem-solving skills in mathematics and science education has always been given special attention;however, the problem-posing approach which plays a key role in mathematics education has not been commonly utilized in science education. As a result, the purpose of this study was to better determine the effects of the problem-posing approach on students' problem-solving skills and metacognitive awareness in science education. This was a quasi-experimental based study conducted with 61 chemistry and 40 physics students;a problem-solving inventory and a metacognitive awareness inventory were administered to participants both as a pre-test and a post-test. During the 2017-2018 academic year, problem-solving activities based on the problem-posing approach were performed with the participating students during their senior year in various university chemistry and physics departments throughout the Republic of Turkey. The study results suggested that structured, semi-structured, and free problem-posing activities improve students' problem-solving skills and metacognitive awareness. These findings indicated not only the usefulness of integrating problem-posing activities into science education programs but also the need for further research into this question.

Investigating the psychological resilience, self-confidence and problem-solving skills of midwife candidates

Background: The high level of psychological resilience, self-confidence and problem solving skills of midwife candidates play an important role in increasing the quality of health care and in fulfilling their responsibilities towards patients. Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the psychological resilience, self-confidence and problem solving skills of midwife candidates. Design: It is a convenience descriptive quantitative study. Settings: Students who study at Health Sciences Faculty in Turkey's Central Anatolia Region. Participants: Midwife candidates (N = 270). Methods: In collection of data, the Personal Information Form, Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults (PRSA), Self-Confidence Scale (SCS), and problem solving Inventory (PSI) were used. Results: There was a negatively moderate-level significant relationship between the problem solving Inventory scores and the Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults scores (r = 0.619;p = 0.000), and between Self-Confidence Scale scores (r = -0.524;p = 0.000). There was a positively moderate-level significant relationship between the Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults scores and the Self-Confidence Scale scores (r = 0.583;p = 0.000). There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the problem solving Inventory and the Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults scores according to getting support in a difficult situation. Conclusions: As psychological resilience and self-confidence levels increase, problem-solving skills increase;additionally, as self-confidence increases, psychological resilience increases too. Psychological resilience, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills of midwife candidates in their first-year of studies are higher than those who are in their fourth year. This involves many areas that IT specialists and engineers need to acquire skill in finding and selecting problems, splitting complex issues into parts, exploring history, finding the right solution alternatives, selecting and optimizing, controlling the solution, and developing a conceptual plan. In our research, we aimed to examine one of the key competences of the 21st century, the problem-solving competence of engineering and IT higher education students. The research presented in the study is an element of a complex higher education competence test. Quantitative research has been done with an online measuring tool, a problem-solving questionnaire consisting of 16 items. The questions examine some elements of the problem-solving process.

In learning systems and environment research, intelligent tutoring and personalisation are considered the two most important factors. An Intelligent Tutoring System can serve as an effective tool to improve problem-solving skills by simulating a human tutor's actions in implementing one-to-one adaptive and personalised teaching. Thus, in this research, a solution-based intelligent tutoring system (SITS) is proposed. It benefits from Bayesian networks in managing uncertainty based on the probability theory for the process of decision-making so as to aid students learn computer programming. Additionally, SITS benefits from a multi-agent system that employs an automatic text-to-flowchart conversion approach to engage novice programmers in flowchart development with the aim of improving their problem-solving skills. Finally, the performance of SITS is investigated through an experimental study. It is revealed that SITS is not only capable of boosting students' learning interest, attitude and technology acceptance, but it also helps students achieve more in terms of problem-solving activities.
