This paper shows the importance and benefit of coupling cloud computing with mobile especially due to power limitations that mobile devices exhibit. Moreover, the work done shows that mobile computing can be applied for educational purposes, where a tool for students termed Mobi4Ed is presented. This educational tool aims at exploiting the concept of cloud computing in the context of image and video processing, where students can assess several algorithms in real-time. Two possible system architectures are detailed, where one uses the cellular channel and the other uses the data channel. Consequently, one of the approaches is adopted and a detailed simulation is done where an Android client device is shown communicating with a server running openCV and using the Haar face-detection algorithm. The work assures the credibility of the adopted system architecture, in terms of deployment, and several future lines of work are proposed.

In this paper, we propose new query processing algorithms for typical spatial queries in SNDB, such as range search and k nearest neighbors (k-NN) search. Our two query processing algorithms can reduce the computation time of network distance between a pair of nodes and the number of disk I/Os required for accessing nodes by using a materialization-based technique with the shortest network distances of all the nodes in the spatial network. Thus, our query processing algorithms improve the existing efficient k-NN (INE) and range search (RNE) algorithms proposed by [1]. It is shown that our range query processing algorithm achieves about up to one of magnitude better performance than the RNE and our k-NN query processing algorithm achieves about up to 150% performance improvements over INE.

An engineered artificial lateral-line system has been recently developed, consisting of a 16-element array of finely spaced MEMS hot-wire flow sensors. This represents a new class of underwater flow sensing instruments and necessitates the development of rapid, efficient, and robust signal processing algorithms. In this paper, we report on the development and implementation of a set of algorithms that assist in the localization and tracking of vibrational dipole sources underwater. A digital spectrometer for 'optimum' pulse processing

A complete digital spectroscopy system supporting the 'optimum' filtering has been designed, built and tested. The optimum filtering has proven to be the best processing algorithm with respect to the achievable energy resolution. The full system has been implemented in a PC, using a. dedicated board for the data acquisition and the CPU of the PC for the digital processing. The code is written in C-language, focused on reducing the execution time, thus reaching a throughput of 1000 pulses per second using a Pentium 100 MHz and processing 12 samples for each pulse. With this optimized code, the processing time increases only linearly with the number of samples per pulse in spite of the algorithm being quadratic. A large variety of high resolution and medium rate applications can fruitfully take advantage of this 'optimum' digital spectroscopy system.

A new digital surround processing system for general A/V sources

A new surround processing algorithm is proposed for the sensible reproduction of nbn-encoded conventional stereo sources as well as Dolby encoded ones. The proposed method synthesizes the additional sound channels to expand the output from the conventional two channels to four or five. The directivity of auditory events is enhanced by the direction enhancement algorithm whose performance can be optimized to both cases of Dolby encoded and non-encoded sources. Also, spectral balance among the channels is tuned up to minimize the defects arising from processes such as coloration of timbre. A surround processing system based on the proposed method was implemented using a custom DASP chip and showed a much satisfactory performance for the various non-encoded sources as well as Dolby encoded sources.

A Radio Interferometric Correlator Based on Graphics-processing Units

A correlator capable of processing data streams at a maximum rate of 16 Gb/s from each station in quasi-real time mode has been developed to process observations on new RT-13 radio telescopes of the Quasar VLBI network. The total data stream at the correlator input is as large as 96 Gb/s. The correlator is software-controlled and implements the FX processing algorithm. Graphical processing units manufactured by NVIDIA are used to perform the most laborious operations: fast Fourier transform, spectrum multiplication and addition, and extraction of phase calibration signals. The correlator, which was produced in 2014, has been processing observations of the Badary and Zelenchukskaya Observatories of the Quasar VLBI network for more than 2 years and a number of UT1-UTC World Time estimates have been obtained.

Spatial processing of Acoustic Signals in Oceanic Waveguides on a Wind Noise Background

The articles studies how the correlation characteristics of noise generated by wind sources affect the efficiency of spatial processing of signals received by a horizontal array in oceanic waveguides with a rough sea surface. The array gain values are analyzed for three spatial processing methods: the standard PA method, optimal linear processing, and optimal quadratic processing. Numerical simulation results for winter hydrological conditions in the Barents Sea and Pacific Ocean are presented. The authors focus on dependence of the array gain on the distance to the source. The array gain values calculated using the wind noise model and traditional noise model uncorrelated on its elements are compared.

Accuracy Evaluation of algorithms for processing a Posteriori Measurement Results Obtained from Tripled Measurement Channels

The paper considers a problem associated with the evaluation of conditional (refined) confidence limits set for measurement errors using a posteriori information on measurement results. An analysis was carried out to compare the accuracy of various algorithms for processing a posteriori measurement results obtained using three measurement channels of the same type. The algorithms are used to process the results of three equally accurate measurements according to the arithmetic mean and median values, as well as the arithmetic mean of the maximum and minimum values. Here, three parameters serve as a posteriori information: the ratio of the difference between the maximum and minimum results of three measurements to the accuracy indicator of the measurement channel;the ratio of the minimum to the maximum values of two differences (the maximum and median or median and minimum values of the three measurement results);the product of the two above-mentioned parameters. The first and second parameters characterize relative spread and uniformity in the dispersion of results obtained from three measurements, respectively, while the third characterizes density and - as with the second parameter - dispersion uniformity. For these three parameters, boundary values were ascertained, relative to which the conditional confidence limits for the errors of algorithms exceed or fall below the unconditional confidence limits for the errors of these algorithms. In terms of accuracy indicators, a particular algorithm can be rationally applied for processing three equally accurate measurements depending on the error distribution law. Relationships are proposed for evaluating the accuracy indicators of results obtained when processing these measurement data.

Effect of Intermodal Correlations on the Efficiency of the Spatial processing of Acoustic Signals in an Oceanic Waveguide with a Perturbed Surface

The effect of intermodal correlations on the efficiency of the spatial processing of a signal in oceanic waveguides with a perturbed surface is studied. An algorithm of calculating the correlation matrix of a signal on the aperture of a horizontal antenna array with allowance for the interferential structure of an acoustic field in the sound channel is proposed. The antenna gain factor is analyzed for three spatial-processing methods, such as the standard phased antenna array, optimal linear processing, and optimal quadratic optimization techniques. The results of numerical modeling for the hydrological conditions of the Barents Sea in the winter period are given. Particular attention is paid to interferential oscillations in the gain factor of an antenna array and the dependence of its values "smoothened " at the scale of the interferential structure of an acoustic field in a waveguide on the problem parameters.
