Research on understanding the remote-sensing process as a system and investigating the interrelated effects of various parameter is described. A system model for the simulation of remote-sensing systems is presented. The system is divided into three parts: the scene, the sensor, and the processing algorithms. Models are presented and implemented for these component systems. Validation of the system model is considered over a specific test site. Results of the simulation for various scene and sensor configurations are included. Results of applying the model to various system configurations using simulated Landsat sensors are then presented to show how the simulation can be used to investigate the interrelated effects of system parameters.

Bird-Aircraft Strike Avoidance Radar

Avian radar system has been developed for bird-aircraft strike hazard avoidance. Two representative systems, which are countrywide and airport-based avian radar systems, are surveyed to summarize the state-of-the-art in this research field. Avian radar experimental system built by Beihang University is introduced in detail, including system architecture, performance analysis, and processing algorithm for bird target detection and tracking. This radar is operated in horizontal and vertical positions alternatively for scanning, and some experimental data are collected, respectively, at reservoir and airport. After processing of background subtraction, noise suppression, target information extraction, tracking and data fusion, a fused image containing bird targets and aircraft is provided. Finally, improvement suggestions on radar antenna, processing algorithms and risk assessment models of bird-aircraft strikes are given. Moreover, a scheme for practical systems applications at airport is proposed.

To standardize parameters used in seismometer testing and calibration and to make these algorithms accessible to the seismological community, we have developed a new seismometer testing software package called Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL) Sensor Test Suite. This software is written in Java and makes use of Seismological Exchange for Earthquake Data (SEED) format. Our goal is not to be all-inclusive but instead to focus on a few of the instrumentation tests we view as critical when verifying a sensor's performance. The tests include self-noise, relative azimuth, relative gain, and estimation of the poles and zeros. For the self-noise and the relative azimuth, we also include three-component versions of these tests to allow for the case of sensors with potentially different orientations (e.g., boreholes). The software has been made available on GitHub with the hope that it will be useful for other seismologists who need to quickly verify various sensor parameters without having to write their own versions of the algorithms. Furthermore, by using a common platform and processing algorithms, it becomes possible to compare results among different tests with similar processing methods being used for both.

We present the parallel implementation of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processor algorithm based on a particular two-dimensional Fourier transform code. The computer architecture consists of a toroidal net with transputers on each node. The excellent performance and flexibility of the net is discussed and shown in a number of graphs.

From laboratory to warehouse: Security robots meet the real world

The Mobile Detection Assessment and Response System robotic security program has successfully demonstrated simultaneous control of multiple robots navigating autonomously within an operational warehouse environment. This real-world warehouse installation required adapting a navigational paradigm designed for highly structured environments such as office corridors (with smooth walls and regularly spaced doorways) to a semistructured warehouse environment (with no exposed walls and within which odd-shaped objects unpredictably move about from day to day). A number of challenges, some expected and others unexpected, were encountered during the transfer of the system first to a beta-test/demonstration site and then to an operational warehouse. This paper examines these problems (and others previously encountered) in a historical context of the evolution of navigation and other needed technologies, and the transition of these technologies from the research lab to an operational,warehouse environment. A key lesson is that system robustness can only be ensured by exhaustively exercising the system's operational capabilities in a number of diverse environments. This approach helps to uncover latent system hardware deficiencies and software implementation errors not manifested in the initial system hardware or initial development environment, and to identify sensor modes or processing algorithms tuned too tightly to the specific characteristics of the initial development environment.

Comparison of the functional organization of sensory modalities can reveal the specialized mechanisms unique to each modality as well as processing algorithms that are common across modalities. Here we examine the rodent whisker system. The whisker's mechanical properties shape the forces transmitted to specialized receptors. The sensory and motor systems are intimately interconnected, giving rise to two forms of sensation: generative and receptive. The sensory pathway is a test bed for fundamental concepts in computation and coding: hierarchical feature detection, sparseness, adaptive representations, and population coding. The central processing of signals can be considered a sequence of filters. At the level of cortex, neurons represent object features by a coordinated population code which encompasses cells with heterogeneous properties.

Investigation of optimum X-ray beam tube voltage and filtration for chest radiography with a computed radiography system

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum tube voltage and amount of added copper (Cu) filtration for processed chest radiographs obtained with an Agfa 75.0 Computed Radiography (CR) system. The contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was measured in the lung, heart/spine and diaphragm compartments of a validated chest phantom using various tube voltages and amounts of Cu filtration. The CNR was derived as a function of air kerma at the CR plate and with the effective dose. As rib contrast can interfere with detection of nodules in chest radiography, a tissue-to-rib ratio (TRR) was derived to investigate which tube voltages suppress the contrast of rib. Although processing algorithms affect the signal and noise in a way that is hard to predict, we found that, for a given set of processing parameters, the CNR was related to the plate air kerma and effective dose in a logarithmic manner (all R-2 >= 0.97). For imaging of the lung region, a low voltage (60 kVp) produced the highest CNR, whereas a high voltage (125 kVp) produced the highest TRR. In the heart/spine region, 80125 kVp produced the highest CNR, while in the diaphragm region 60-90 kVp produced the highest CNR. For chest radiography with this CR system, the optimal tube voltage depends upon the region of interest. Of the filters tested, a 0.1 mm Cu thickness was found to provide a statistically significant increase in the CNR in the diaphragm region with tube potentials of 60 kVp and 80 kVp, without affecting the CNR in the other anatomical compartments.

A processing algorithm was developed to detect and determine the lengths of DNA fragments in Atomic Force Microscope images. The algorithm was designed to account for varying image conditions, fragment sizes, and background contamination, while minimizing processing time to provide high throughput. Although a large enough sample of images has not been tested yet to determine precisely the accuracy, we estimate accuracy to be within 2 pixels based on analysis of an ideal simulated image and an actual image.

The short time to market cycle and the target to reduce design and verification costs are driving forces to design programmable implementations of the video processing algorithms. We present two processor architectures the first one representing an application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP) design, whereas the second architecture represents a domain-specific instruction-set processor (DSIP) architecture with more general purpose instruction-set. In this work, we present results for H264 and VP8 in-loop deblocking algorithms. The processors are based on the transport triggered architecture which provides scalable instruction-level parallelism and, thanks to its simple structure, lend itself to cost effective designs. Both of the designs are programmed with C language with a minimal additional parallelism markup. The designs fulfill real-time requirements for filtering macroblocks in high-definition video. The first architecture, based on special function units, filters a high-definition stream (1920 x 1080) at 75 fps, whereas the second architecture, which provides a better programmability, filters the stream at 53 fps. The processors run on 200 MHz clock frequency and the areas vary from 146k to 373k gate equivalents depending on the processor architecture.
