This paper presents the application and evaluation of high-level synthesis (HLS) tools for a complex video processing algorithm. As case study predictive block-based motion estimation is chosen. The hardware implementation of the algorithm is introduced, and the implementation using HLS tools is presented, including various tips and pitfalls. The resulting HLS generated code is compared to a hand-coded version in terms of performance and resource requirements by synthesizing both versions for a Virtex-7 FPGA, and also in terms of implementation time and code length and readability. The results show that the processing performance is comparable and the required resources are acceptable for current FPGAs for an HLS-based implementation. Finally, recommendations are given for which parts of the motion estimation algorithm the HLS-based approach is preferable, and which parts should be implemented manually, allowing a prognosis for further video processing algorithms.

Frequency-domain terahertz techniques offer spectral selectivity, high resolution and excellent signal-to-noise ratios. Two-color distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers now form the basis of compact and portable systems. Photomixers - photoconductors or fast p-i-n photodiodes - convert the optical beat signal of the two lasers into tunable, narrow-band terahertz radiation. Optimized laser tuning and data processing algorithms reduce the acquisition time for a complete spectrum from several hours to below 2 minutes. This talk compares THz systems based on GaAs photomixer technology and recent developments using InGaAs/InP emitters and detectors. Selected application examples are presented.

Ultrasonic data acquisition systems used in the medical imaging and nondestructive testing applications have critical requirements in order to be capable of evaluating and prototyping ultrasound applications. In this paper, a system-on-chip (SoC) based reconfigurable ultrasonic testing system (RUTS) is developed for implementation of high-speed ultrasonic signal processing algorithms. RUTS comprises of a fully reconfigurable analog front-end (AFE) sub-system for efficient data acquisition, and a Xilinx Zynq SoC module for dynamic feature control. Computationally intensive ultrasonic signal processing algorithms are implemented on Zynq SoC using hardware-software co-design methodologies. AFE supports up to 8 transducers for phased-array implementation. This Linux-based system is analyzed for ultrasonic data compression implementation providing a very versatile environment for further ultrasound system development and research work.

The search for new exoplanets by direct imaging is a very active research topic in astronomy. The detection is particularly challenging because of the very high contrast between the host star and the companions. They thus remain hidden by a nonstationary background displaying strong spatial correlations. We propose a new algorithm named PACO (for PAtch COvariances) for reduction of differential imaging datasets. Contrary to existing approaches, we model the background correlations using a local Gaussian distribution that locally captures the spatial correlations at the scale of a patch of a few tens of pixels. The decision in favor of the presence or the absence of an exoplanet in then performed by a binary hypothesis test. The method is completely parameter-free and produces both stationary and statistically grounded detection maps so that the false alarm rate, the probability of detection and the contrast can be directly assessed without postprocessing and/or Monte-Carlo simulations. We describe in a forthcoming paper its detailed principle and implementation. In this paper, we recall the principle of the PACO algorithm and we give new illustrations of its bene fits in terms of detection capabilities on datasets from the VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS instrument. We also apply our algorithm on multi-spectral datasets from the VLT/SPHERE-IFS spectrograph. The performance of PACO is compared to state-of-the-art algorithms such as TLOCI and KLIP-PCA.

Image and video processing algorithms are becoming more and more sophisticated. An efficient hardware architecture is a requirement in order to address effectively the increasing computational workload. In a context of high performance, low cost and rapid prototyping, a hybrid SIMD/MIMD architecture for image processing is proposed in this work. By reusing functional units and including a dynamically reconfigurable datapath, this architecture enables high performance devices for general image processing tasks with high application development productivity when using as part of a System-on-Chip. A 32-bit 128-unit coprocessor was prototyped on a Virtex-6 FPGA and results show a peak performance of 19.6 GOP/s.

Recent work in developing a mode orthogonalisation and filtering post processing algorithm for multipath suppression in far-field and planar near-field antenna measurement systems has enabled worthwhile improvements to be obtained from the analogous, but mathematically and computationally distinct, cylindrical analogue. This paper presents an overview of the measurement and novel post-processing algorithm as embodied within the cylindrical mathematical absorber reflection suppression technique as well as comparing and contrasting results obtained from the new post-processing algorithms with previously published data.

This paper describes the design of a wideband spatial processor for the detection of a straight-line object by an ultrasonic pulse-echo detection system. An ultrasonic pulse is transmitted from the transducer and the two wavelets diffracted form the two end points of the straight-line object are received by three spatially separated receivers. Three stages of signal processing are carried out. At the first stage, the Mother Wavelet operator generates three sets of two-dimensional wavelet coefficients. At the second stager cross wavelet transforms are performed on wavelet coefficients obtained in the first stage. At the third stage, cross wavelet transforms are performed on cross wavelet coefficients obtained in the second stage: As a result of this three-stage operation, a high-resolution image about the environment is generated and the range and bearing of the two end points of the straight-line object are obtained. A simulation program is developed to investigate the processing algorithm in an ultrasonic detection environment.

Many professional communities nowadays require accurate position information. Although various location technologies are integrated in one device, GNSS remains one of the main sources of precise positioning information. Traditionally, GNSS precise positioning has been achieved in relative mode using differential principles. On the other hand, with the technological advances in GNSS technology and processing algorithms, nowadays, GNSS precise positioning can also be achieved in absolute mode using a single GNSS sensor in combination with precise information about the satellite orbits and clocks. Such absolute positioning algorithm is known as Precise Point Positioning. PPP takes advantage of the carrier phase observation, the most precise observation from a satellite system. In this work, a PPP algorithm is implemented and tested for absolute georeference of data captured by a boat-mounted mobile terrestrial remote sensing platform. The estimation scheme for kinematic PPP processing is modified accordingly in order to reflect the test dynamics. The test results demonstrate that centimetre level accuracies are achievable in kinematic mode although the main challenge is to keep continuous satellite signal tracking. In addition, robust quality control and better outlier detection algorithms may further increase the usability of GNSS precise point positioning using carrier phase observations.

The report describes algorithms for calculating the durations of phases, determining the peak values in each phase, implemented on the basis of the step phase program results. The algorithms results of the operation for the processing of experimental data are presented. The interval size of passive and active phases for the double step is presented as a percentage, and the moment of the least stable position of the body is determined. The presented algorithms in the article will be used in the future to identify diseases or abnormalities in the work of the locomotor system.

(Interferometric) SAR signal simulation is very useful to test processing algorithms of real data. A simulator can provide a reliable version of signals received by a particular system, when the geometric and the electromagnetics characteristics of targets are fixed. In this paper we present a simulator for an interferometric (single-pass) SAR system placed on a spaceborne platform moving over an ideal Kepler's orbit. Stripmap and spotlight operational mode can be considered, and, by describing system geometry in a platform frame of reference, mechanical deformation of structures can be easily modeled.
