This paper provides an updated discussion of the authors' ongoing efforts in developing a design framework for UML diagrams in technical documentation. UML diagrams are a key part of program design. They can enhance understanding of complex programming concepts, and assist in problem analysis and solution design. In a previous paper, "Designing UML diagrams for technical documentation" [1], the authors presented a collaborative process that applies established design principles to UML diagrams, improving diagram presentation and shrinking publication costs and schedules. This paper expands on that work, showing how the established process can now be applied to several different modeling tools, including IBM Rational® XDE and Microsoft Visio. It also provides a detailed description of how to export modeling files to other file formats. The authors show how their process workflow has evolved over the past year as it has been applied by developers, writers, and graphic designers at IBM's Toronto Software Laboratory, and discuss ways in which they will continue to monitor and improve the efficacy of both the process and resulting diagrams.

In this paper we discuss how the combined efforts of three teams, Information Development (ID), Test, and User Experience Design (UED), improved the overall customer experience with store development in IBM® WebSphere® Commerce, a software package that enables merchants to host their businesses online. The project began in the spring of 2001 with a formal effort to solicit customer feedback on documentation. A few months later, a test team was created to simulate the customer experience. The test team performed the store development tasks as customers would, following only the instructions in the documentation. As ID and Test continued working together, they began to realize that, in order to improve the documentation, they had to revisit and improve the actual store development. This led to the involvement of the UED team. UED, Test, and ID continued working together to understand the store development processes our customers follow and the challenges they face. Through collaboration, the team identified areas for improvement in both the tools and the documentation, and developed an action plan to address these problems.

documentation and package design play a major role in customer satisfaction. The author tested three sets of wordless documentation by building pieces of furniture from three different manufacturers. While the construction methods, packaging, and wordless documentation methods were on the surface very similar, small differences had a significant impact on the usability of the instructions and the overall customer satisfaction with the documentation and the product. Decisions that were handled differently included visual verification of parts, whether or not extra hardware was provided and how it was provided, the appropriateness of the hardware, the quality of the hardware, the need for additional tools, and the care evidenced in packaging and labeling of parts. From these experiences, she makes recommendations for enhancing customer satisfaction that apply not just to wordless documentation, but to other consumer products.

This workshop will focus on the refinement of an assessment instrument to determine the barriers to increased adoption of UML diagrams by professional software engineers, technical writers, and other project stakeholders.
