Studying Task Processes for Improving programmer Productivity

Productivity of a software development organization can be enhanced by improving the software process, using better tools/technology, and enhancing the productivity of programmers. This work focuses on improving programmer productivity by studying the process used by a programmer for executing an assigned task, which we call the task process. We propose a general framework for studying the impact of task processes on programmer productivity and also the impact of transferring task processes of high-productivity programmers to average-productivity peers. We applied the framework to a few live projects in Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Limited, a CMMI Level 5 company. In each project, we identified two groups of programmers: high-productivity and average-productivity programmers. We requested each programmer to video capture their computer screen while executing his/her assigned tasks. We then analyzed these task videos to extract the task processes and then used them to identify the differences between the task processes used by the two groups. Some key differences were found between the task processes, which could account for the difference in productivities of the two groups. Similarities between the task processes were also analyzed quantitatively by modeling each task process as a Markov chain. We found that programmers from the same group used similar task processes, but the task processes of the two groups differed considerably. The task processes of high-productivity programmers were transferred to the average-productivity programmers by training them on the key steps missing in their process but commonly present in the work of their high-productivity peers. A substantial productivity gain was found in the average-productivity programmers as a result of this transfer. The impact of stressors on the relationship between personality traits, knowledge collection behaviour and programmer creativity intention in software engineering

Context: Individual and contextual factors have a profound impact on an individual's creativity. In the first part of this research, we concluded that, for a programmer's creativity intention, individual factors including big 5 personality traits and knowledge collection behaviour play a key role. However, it is important to bring contextual factors into the model to provide a holistic understanding. Objectives: Hence, the objective of the present research is to expand the earlier work by (i) identifying the software engineering occupational stressors relevant to programmers, and (ii) examining their impact as moderators for the relationship between individual factors (i.e., big five personality traits and knowledge collection behaviour) and the creativity intention of the programmer. Methods: To analyse the moderating impact of 6 stressors, the survey questionnaire was used to collect data from 294 programmers working in software companies in Pakistan. The data were analysed using the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) - Partial Least Square (PLS) technique. Results: The findings revealed that in the presence of a moderate level of stress, the relationship between knowledge collection behaviour and creativity intention was strengthened. Furthermore, stressors interacted differently with different personality traits. An overarching statement could be that most of the stressors positively moderated the relationships between different personality traits and creativity intentions. However, contrary to the prior research, the majority of the stressors negatively affected the impact of the openness to experience trait on creativity intention. Conclusion: The research significantly contributes to the body of knowledge of behavioural software engineering. The findings of this research are novel and intriguing in many aspects and will benefit software organizations to increase innovation, by increasing programmers' creativity through mitigating stress. Enterprising and lost: Professional lives of programmer interns

programmer interns are a distinctive group of precarious laborers. They undertake the same jobs as junior programmers with formal employment, while suffering from high pressure and earning low pay. Still, they are convinced that only a long-term internship can keep them on the right track of professional career development. We explore their consent-making through six months of fieldwork in an internet company, and propose the "enterprising-self" game to explain their subjective orientations. In the enterprising-self game, programmer interns become accustomed to identifying themselves with a particular type of quantifiable labor product, for instance, the positioning of "their" sticky notes on company whiteboards and the expected "T-levels" that represent their employability in the industry, by which their enterprising self is a by-product. programmer interns seems to believe that, rather than higher education, state-owned enterprises, or multinational enterprises, only domestic internet companies can help them attain their enterprising selves. Even though the supervisor-intern relationship and the "gender game" of masculinity performance constitute part of the programmer interns' enterprising-self game, the essence of the game has never been challenged and in some ways is only being reinforced. Though only a few lucky employees can win the game by attaining promotion to the senior engineer or management level, most of them still get lost in the "periodic" and "imperceptible" time of life as a programmer, which is characterized by full devotion to the company, until the "35-year-old crisis".

Business process analysis of programmer job role in software development using process mining

In software development, the contribution of each role is needed to run the business process according to the expected goals. This research was conducted to identify the programmer’s contribution in the software engineering course. Based on the record of commit data through collaboration tools, it was found that programmers contributed less when compared to project managers and analysts. So, it is necessary to discover the programmer’s workflow. Process mining techniques were used in this study to obtain a flow based on the event log generated by the collaboration tools. The results of this study were on average; each team carried out 4-6 activities. Based on SEQUAL framework, whether syntactic, semantic, or pragmatic, there are issues that occur, including deadlocks, lack of synchronization, superfluous activity, labeling issues, line crossing, and crooked alignment. Handling the quality issue of the process can improve the role of programmers and all members of the software development team.

The impact of personality traits and knowledge collection behavior on programmer creativity

Context: Creativity is one of the essential ingredients in successful software engineering. However, majority of the work related to creativity in software engineering has focused on creativity in requirement engineering. Furthermore, there are very few studies that examine programmer creativity and the impact of individual and contextual factors on it. Objective: The objective of the study is to analyze the impact of the big five personality traits including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience, as well as knowledge collection behavior on a programmer's creativity intention. Method: A quantitative survey was conducted and data from 294 programmers, working in offshore software development projects, was collected. The data was later analyzed using Smart-PLS (3.0). Results and Conclusions: The results indicated that openness to experience, extraversion, conscientiousness and knowledge collection behavior positively predicted a programmer's creativity intention. On the other hand, neuroticism negatively predicts creativity intention of the programmer. The study also concluded that all of the independent variables, except the agreeableness trait, significantly predict creativity intention which in turn significantly predicts creativity. As a result, our conclusions indicate that programmer's personality traits and knowledge collection behavior play a key role in shaping their intention to be creative. Hence, personality traits and knowledge collection behavior should be given due attention during the hiring process of creativity-oriented software companies.

Making programmer Effective for Software Development Teams: An Extended Study

The fast growing demand of software has caused numerous challenges for software developers to produces quality software within deadlines. The main purpose of this research article was to fmd the suitable personality type combinations of programmer with team-leaders and programmers by gender classification in software development teams. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was applied to measure the personality types of the study participants. In order to fmd the possible combination of personality types between team-leader and programmer, this study applied Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Johnson's Algorithm (JA) on data. Results emanated from training experiments were validated with Standard Voting (SV), Voting with Object tracking, and Naive Bayes classification techniques based on prediction accuracy. Basically, two types of decision rules were formed: rules without gender classification of programmer but they only discussed the personality types of team-leader and programmer. Whereas, the second type of rules were composed of team-leader, programmer personality types, and gender of programmer. It was found that extrovert (E) trait programmers can be suitable with E trait team-leaders. In the same way, male programmer can work in a good way with male leaders or other way around for females. At the end, there were only certain personality types appeared to be effective in mixed gender teams.

Effective Personality Preferences of Software programmer: A Systematic Review

A plethora of research has been carried out to explore the key importance of team roles and personality types in software development. What types of personality are handy and beneficial for an ideal and effective teamwork is still a question for the researchers and practitioners. This study has combined the past claims of personality preferences for programmer role so that researchers and practitioners can easily access the literature. In order to achieve the study objective, Kitchenham guidelines were followed to design and implement the review protocol. The whole review focused to find the effective personality preferences of programmer role from different experimental settings: individuals-and-teams and academic-and-industiy. Additionally, only those studies were selected that used Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI) personality test. The results of this study were divided into three categories based on the obtained personality preferences: strongly appeared, weakly appeared, and disappeared. For example, it was strongly observed in the results that combination of intuitive (N) and feeling (F) traits is not a suitable personality choice for programmer role. The conclusion of this study can be drawn with the statement that personality based software development research needs serious attention to fill the wide gaps. There are numerous ambiguities for practitioners if they intend to put these studies into use.
