A Comparison between Two Automatic Assessment Approaches for programming: An Empirical Study on MOOCs

Computer-graders have been in regular use in the context of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The automatic grading of programs presents an opportunity to assess and provide tailored feedback to large classes, while featuring at the same time a number of benefits like: immediate feedback, unlimited submissions, as well as low cost of feedback. The present paper compares Algo+, an automatic assessment tool for computer programs, to an automatic grader used in a MOOC course at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland). This empirical study explores the practicability and behavior of Algo+ and analyzes whether it can be used to evaluate a large scale of programs. Algo+ is a prototype based on a static analysis approach for automated assessment of algorithms where programs are not executed but analyzed by looking at their instructions. The second tool, EPFL grader, is used to grade programs submitted by students in MOOCs of Introductory programming with C++ at EPFL and is based on a compiler approach (Dynamic Analysis approach). In this technique submissions are assessed via a battery of unit tests where the student programs are run with standard input and assessed on whether they produced the correct output. In this study results showed the advantages and limits of each approach and pointed out how the two tools can be used to get a benefit assessment of students' learning in MOOCs of computer programming. This study led to the proposition of a model for the relationship between the number of submissions and the appearance of the most frequent submitted programs. This technique is used by Algo+ for giving feedback and it is based only on the n most redundant submissions that have been annotated by the instructor.

In this paper, we present a novel approach of automated evaluation of programming assignments (AEPA) the highlight of which is that it automatically identifies multiple solution approaches to the programming question from the set of submitted solutions. Our approach does not require the instructor to foresee all the possible solution approaches and accomplishes this task with little or no human intervention. This paves the way to multiple fundamental improvements in the way automated evaluation of programming assignments is done today. We have applied our method on multiple data sets of practical scale. In all cases, our method was able to detect the solution approaches employed by the students.

programming exercises lend themselves to learning environments that can provide automated testing and formative feedback to allow students to learn independently and at their own pace. Even so, there are still situations where there is no substitute for interaction with a human expert to provide guidance and encouragement to students. We describe how online tutoring is used within two very different contexts on the same platform. While both contexts use a specific learning environment, many of the experiences encountered in providing online tutoring support provide important lessons for educators that generalise to using any comparable environment.

programming courses can be hard for students, but also for teachers, because of the huge amount of time that takes to manually grade each student's assignment and the different kind of valid solutions. Moreover, there are other problems related to manually grade assignments such as completely objective and homogeneous grading. In consequence, both students and teachers don't get feedback as fast as they should in order to take action and reinforce the topics with lower performance on each assignment. Finally, the increasing popularity of MOOCs makes manually grading no longer viable. To this aim, a scalable autograder system is proposed in order to provide students with faster feedback and help teachers with the evaluation of assignments. Our proposal can be used for learning different programming languages like Java, Python, C, C# and Ruby.

Existing online judge systems for automatically evaluating programming exercises mainly rely on standard input and output streams without considering small pieces of code such as functions, methods or classes. This approach qualifies for short programming exercises in which input and outputs are clearly indicated. However, these kinds of judges are hard to apply in long programming exercises. This article presents a novel online judge system called UnitJudge designed for evaluating long programming practices based on unit testing for small pieces of the practice. In the experiments on two long practices about the game of the Goose in Fundamentals of programming subject the first year of the Double Grade of Computer Science and Mathematics and the Grade of Data Engineer and Artificial Intelligence in Complutense University of Madrid, students perceived UnitJudge useful (5.62 out of 7) and easy to learn (5.99 out of 7) according to the Usefulness, Satisfaction and Ease of use validated scale.

Students' perception of academic dishonesty in programming courses

Plagiarism in programming assignments is a common and current challenge. However, insufficient studies have examined plagiarism in the Middle East region. Thus, this research surveyed 422 students from a middle eastern university. It primarily purported to assess the students' perception of plagiarism in writing programming assignments. Additionally, this study reported the changes in students' perceptions of plagiarism in programming assignments between 2018 and 2021, the extent of this dishonest behaviour, and the demographical factors that influence it. A comparative analysis of the data from the 2017-2018 and 2020-2021 surveys of students specialising in Information Technology-related programmes found that those in the latter survey considered plagiarism less acceptable. In addition, the female students and those with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) higher than or equal to three also considered cheating and plagiarism behaviours in programming assignments to be less acceptable. Furthermore, these findings did not report a substantial perception variance related to student class standing or specialisation.

A typical CS2 course has two goals that often work at cross-purposes. One goal is to teach students how to apply a variety of software engineering skills to create solutions to real-world problems. A second goal is to teach students the theory and practice behind classical algorithms and data structures. The use of small, short-term programming assignments, however, tends to sacrifice the first goal in favor of the second. We successfully experimented with solving this problem by organizing a CS2 course around a programming project that spanned an entire term. This paper describes the project, our experiences in using it, and the reactions of the students.

The paper presents an approach to the design and implementation of web-based environments for practical exercises in parallel and distributed computing (PDC). The presented approach introduces minimal development and operational costs by relying on Everest, a general-purpose platform for building computational web services. The flexibility of proposed service-oriented architecture enables the development of different types of services targeting various use cases and PDC topics. The generic execution services support the execution of different types of parallel and distributed programs on corresponding computing systems, while the assignment evaluation services implement the execution and evaluation of solutions to programming assignments. As was demonstrated by teaching two introductory PDC courses, the presented approach helps to enhance students' practical experience while avoiding low-level interfaces, reducing the grading time and providing a level of automation necessary for scaling the course to a large number of students. In contrast to other efforts, the exploited Platform as a Service model provides the ability to quickly reuse this approach by other PDC educators without installation of the Everest platform. This report describes and evaluates the implementation and applicability of an automatic programming assignment grading system we named the online judge. We compared this with the manual grading system that is currently being used and showed that the automatic grading system, when implemented carefully, is more convenient, fairer, and more secure than the former. We have successfully tested the system on two courses. However, further studies need to be conducted to improve the effectiveness of learning through this system. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. This Full Research Paper investigated the correlations of automated formative feedback and student knowledge transfer in an advanced-level network course. A microservice of automated formative feedback was designed and implemented. The automated feedback was set up to address correctness and coding style along a series of milestones in finishing each of the assigned programming projects. 36 students participated in this study. Different from the concerns of prior studies that automated formative feedback may encourage trial & error and harm learning, this study identified a link between the automated formative feedback and student knowledge transfer. The results of this study confirmed positive findings from other fields on formative feedback, and call for more research on formative feedback in computing education.
