Competitions in programming for secondary and high school students in Bulgaria have long traditions. The National Olympiad in Informatics started in 1985. Even before 1985, competitions on national and regional level were popular. Bulgaria is founder and the first host of the International Olympiad in Informatics in 1989. The paper presents the current situation and challenges in the area of Informatics competitions in Bulgaria. The structure of the competition system, including the Bulgarian National Olympiad in Informatics is outlined.

programming contests should be capable of being appealing to both the contestants and the general public. We feel that the use of graphical user interfaces and computer graphics could help achieve this goal, providing new ways of viewing the task. We describe experiments we made with games (Tic-Tac-Toe, Snake and Ataxx, an Othello-like game), which were made available to students with graphical components, and discuss the results. We also present a simple graphic library where simple drawings can be made and show how it can be used in a programming contest environment. We then conclude by revisiting some past IOI problems, suggesting ways to enhance them with graphical components.

Nowadays we can see and feel the technological change around us. Most of the tools are extended with online functionality, new online collaboration environments are appearing and bring along wide range of data for collection. Following this shift with the appearance of cognitive infocommunication we established a framework and created a usage scenario as an online system for supporting programmers in our Smart Campus platform. When we created the platform, extendibility and adaptivity were the primary goals to stand for efficient data collection through crowdsourced collectors. This paper is the continuation of our work and describes our online programming contest environment where services are applied to help the users solving assessments and grading them. The collected data help us to discover hidden correspondences and fine tune our problem suggestion service. While we continuously collect data, the applied clustering algorithms could help us to understand the problems arriving through the students' learning path and along these we could achieve a much more fine-grained solution for our services.

The ACM International Collegiate programming Contest (ICPC) is the most popular programming competition for universities worldwide. This contest examines the comprehensive ability of teams to program to solve problems. Teamwork is important besides team members' personal skills and capabilities. There have been literature on computer algorithms, personal training for programming contests, and team strategies during the contests. However, few articles involve team building and teamwork training for programming contests. This poster hopes to provide guidance and reference for coaches and contestants in teamwork training for programming contests, so that a team can benefit most from limited time of training to make as great progress as possible. This poster shares the authors' experience in team training for ICPC. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) of teamwork for programming contests are concluded and presented in details. The authors represent various teamwork methods graphically, so that it is visually helpful for study and discussion. These teamwork methods are pure teamwork, no-teamwork, some paired methods, and the method preferred by the authors. A team training form is then proposed to record the team behaviors in team training. By examining the training record, the coach and the team themselves can discover the team's strengths and weaknesses in various aspects, and evaluate the teamwork quality in the ways of communication, coordination, balance of member contributions and mutual support. Handouts will be available showing various teamwork methods in a graphical representation and some real training record forms.

programming contests have been used at the high school level to motivate students to study computing and generate excitement about computing topics. However, little investigation has been done into whether the selection of programming language impacts success in such contests. This poster presents the results of an analysis of five years of high school contest results held at Western New England University. The analysis looks at the languages used by winning teams and number of submissions. Results appear to indicate that winning teams use Java and Python for programming languages while less successful teams use BASIC, VisualBasic and C++. Interestingly, the majority of teams used BASIC as their programming language. Another interesting result was that low performing teams tend to have a disproportionately large number of submissions.

Recently, programming contests, especially contests where contestants compete with each other by developing programs that plays on game software, are becoming popular as an educational methodology. However, such game software is different from existing game software and applications that users directly plays or manipulates. Towards Causal Analysis of Empirical Software Engineering Data: The Impact of programming Languages on Coding Competitions

There is abundant observational data in the software engineering domain, whereas running large-scale controlled experiments is often practically impossible. Thus, most empirical studies can only report statistical correlations-instead of potentially more insightful and robust causal relations. To support analyzing purely observational data for causal relations and to assess any differences between purely predictive and causal models of the same data, this article discusses some novel techniques based on structural causal models (such as directed acyclic graphs of causal Bayesian networks). Using these techniques, one can rigorously express, and partially validate, causal hypotheses and then use the causal information to guide the construction of a statistical model that captures genuine causal relations-such that correlation does imply causation. We apply these ideas to analyzing public data about programmer performance in Code Jam, a large worldwide coding contest organized by Google every year. Specifically, we look at the impact of different programming languages on a participant's performance in the contest. While the overall effect associated with programming languages is weak compared to other variables-regardless of whether we consider correlational or causal links-we found considerable differences between a purely associational and a causal analysis of the very same data. The takeaway message is that even an imperfect causal analysis of observational data can help answer the salient research questions more precisely and more robustly than with just purely predictive techniques-where genuine causal effects may be confounded.

Practical abilities are important for students from majors including Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Along with the popularity of ACM International Collegiate programming Contest (ACM/ICPC) and other programming contests, online judge (OJ) websites achieve rapid development, thus providing a new kind of programming practice, i.e. online practice. Due to fair and timely feedback results from OJ websites, online practice outperforms traditional programming practice. In order to promote students' practical abilities in programming and algorithm designing, this article presents a novel teaching idea, online judge & practice oriented teaching (OJPOT). OJPOT is applied to programming Foundation course. OJPOT cultivates students' practical abilities through various kinds of programming practice, such as programming contests, online practice and course project. To verify the effectiveness of this novel teaching idea, this study conducts empirical research. The experimental results show that OJPOT works effectively in enhancing students' practical abilities compared with the traditional teaching idea.

The Informatics Olympiad plays key role in introducing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to Mongolian secondary schools. It is one of the biggest ICT related competition among Mongolian secondary school teachers and students. The goals of the Informatics Olympiad are to stimulate interest in informatics and information technology, and to bring together exceptionally talented teachers and students from all over Mongolia. Mongolian Informatics Association organizes annual national informatics Olympiads in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (MOECS) and other universities for the 21st year. For past years, a number of activities were implemented to enhance the informatics Olympiads, such as training of informatics subject teachers, development of training manuals and handbooks with tasks and problems for the informatics Olympiads, various activities to support participation of Mongolian teams in the International Olympiad in Informatics. In this paper, we describe national Informatics Olympiads in Mongolia, informatics education, Mongolian participation in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), and related key issues and problems.
