In this research, we devised learning support strategies to change how teaching assistants (TAs) for basic university courses in information technology (IT) behave toward students during programming classes. Based on learning support strategies, we developed and evaluated a TA support system that presents student learning situations on mobile devices. In basic IT courses, a TA support system is often used to help and guide individual students. To help TAs using such support, a previous study visualizes the learning situation and offers advice. However, support in addition to presenting learning situations to the TA should include guidelines for interaction with the students. In order to provide adequate support to students, we propose learning support strategies for TAs. In practical computer science exercises, TAs mainly advise and answer questions from students. However, it is not clear how TAs could best support students. Therefore, we propose the following learning support three types of strategies: "Hope", "Priority", "Motivation". Futhermore, we researched what learning support from the TA was desired by the students and developed a TA support system that presents learning support strategies. According to each learning support strategy, the classroom's map governs seat colors for each student who is the recipient of advice. The TA prioritizes helping the students presented by the learning support strategy as mapped by the seat charts. The system we developed was practiced in class, and as a result we found that even students who wanted to work on sophisticated content did not consider the teacher and TA unnecessary.

programming exercises for students with different programming skills learning at the same PC room require a large amount of time and human resources from an instructor. In this paper, the authors are developing a server-client assistance system for instructors to collect, store, monitor, and analyze student's codes and programming activity logs. The server has web interface for instructors that show student's codes and visualize various metrics and the client, an Eclipse plug-in, uploads student's codes and programming activity logs. The authors confirmed the prototype system works correctly in preliminary evaluation;however, found that performance for some functionalities should be improved.

programming teachers often seek new ways to help their students succeed more in their studies. We aim to characterize the students who succeed in a second year Computer Science programming exercise, and to identify factors that may be controlled or acquired to enhance success. We study several factors that influence students' success. Results show that actual time investment and working in pairs on the exercise are significant factors for predicting success. Other measure studied was the ability of students to accurately estimate the required amount of work. We found that students have poor accuracy in their effort estimate compared to the actual work. Satisfaction from working on the exercise was found to have positive correlation with the exercise grade. We also studied the students' ability to accurately estimate their grades and the relation between actual success and their self-judgement, and found a positive correlation between being more pessimistic about the expected grade, the time invested, and the actual grade. Results can be translated into useful recommendations for programming teachers as well as for team leaders.

In programming exercise classes, teachers or teaching assistants (hereinafter referred to as "TAs") circulate among the students to answer their questions. However, it is difficult to detect students who reach impasses, to instantly identify the part of the program in which students reach impasses, or to grasp the impasse status of the entire class. To solve these problems, we have developed a system with the ability to display impasses detected from students' exercise information on the source code and to aggregate and display the impasse for the entire class.

In order to cultivate human resources with an advanced skill of software development, it is necessary to make the learner acquire the programming technology as the basis at an early point and with certainty. programming education is conducted with a focus on exercise, and it is often the case that the result is made submitted as a report, in order to evaluate the degree of fixation for the knowledge by the exercise. By using the report, one can check the final result of the exercise, but it is difficult for the educator to know the process by the learner to complete making the software, or on its way, to face what kind of problems are faced and to cope with them. In this study, in conjunction with Eclipse, a learning environment to support software development exercise is constructed by collecting fine-grained record of learner's programming in real time and by storing it to the server connected to the network.

Parsons problems are a type of programming exercise where students rearrange jumbled code blocks of a solution program back into its original form. It is usually implemented as a complement or alternative to traditional programming exercises like code-tracing and code-writing. This paper reviews the existing literature on the Parsons problem in introductory CS education. We find that the flexible nature of the design of Parsons problems has led to many variants, and these have been continuously refined to better address student needs. However, the effectiveness of Parsons problems, both as a question type and as a learning tool in CS education, remains uncertain due to a lack of replicated research in the field.

The acts to submit the copied programs of other person make problems in the subject of the programming exercise in university curriculum. Teachers could not make accurate scores and evaluate the reached learning level of students. The code clone detection technique is to automatically detect the copied programs. Researches of the code clone detection technique have been proposed. The object of these researches, however, focused on the source code of industrial field. There are some problems to detect illicit copied codes of reports made by students. In this research, we developed the code clone detection algorithm focusing on the detection of illicit copied codes of submitted reports of students in a programming exercise. Our proposed algorithm is based on the comparison of tokens and can declare the illicit copied codes invalid. The features of illicit copied codes such as swapping the functions and program lines, renaming variable names, changing digits, comments and string constants and changing source codes using formatting tools are detected. We implemented the proposed algorithm and experimented to evaluate our system for the submitted subjects of 119 students. Compared to the human detection for small size of source codes of students in a programming exercise, our system found 32 codes as the illicit copy in 36 illicit copied codes among 14,042 combination detective rules with the threshold which are realized the recall=0.8. The miss detection finding as the copied code was 72 codes with precision=0.302.

Collaborative programming is an effective approach to software development, improving software quality, programmer's satisfaction and shortening delivery time. This study examines the application of a collaborative Web-based IDE named IDEOL to execute a four-week multi-submission programming assignment in an introductory object-oriented programming class. Forty eight students forming 24 two-member groups in class used the IDE to interact and write source code required by the project. All collaborative and programming activities performed by students were recorded by IDEOL. The results of the study shows that students tend to postpone their programming work until the submission dates. This study also provides an approach to designing and executing an extended programming exercises, which receives high student satisfaction. Our results imply that IDEOL is a useful environment for students to collaborate, learn, and practice programming to improve their learning satisfaction. In addition, as students tend to procrastinate, IDEOL is a useful tool to facilitate, monitor, and report student progress in extended programming exercises.

The conducts to copy using other person's source codes and submit as reports are regarded as a problem for program exercises of programming subjects in universities or colleges. An automatic detection algorithm to detect illicit copies is required in these educational organizations. In previous researches, these methods based on the detection standard of the token length have been proposed. These methods use the threshold simply using the character length. In these cases, miss detections occur in the case of the simple program such as the sequence of the print statement or the case that token sequences appear in the middle of a statement. This paper proposes the detection method using the program complexity and the complete token sequence. As the results of experiments, our method can improve the recall.. adopting the complexity as the detection standard and the precision.. adopting the complete token sequence for exercise programs submitted by students.

We have implemented a learning method for testing the Java programs developed by students of a sophomore class. They can write programs;however, they cannot test them well to check if they meet the specified requirements. Our teaming method provides a navigation process for testing their programs under the condition that all the method specifications and their signatures are given by the instructor. This navigation process comprises three steps. The first step is to team to decide the order of unit testing for all the methods of the program. The second step is to learn to define test cases for each method. The third step is to learn to develop a unit testing program and execute it. In this paper, we propose a learning method for testing and the development of a support tool for learning the method to test Java programs.
