Key program interfaces are sometimes documented with usage examples: concrete code snippets that characterize common use cases for a particular data type. While such documentation is known to be of great utility, it is burdensome to create and can be incomplete, out of date, or not representative of actual practice. We present an automatic technique for mining and synthesizing succinct and representative human-readable documentation of program interfaces. Our algorithm is based on a combination of path sensitive dataflow analysis, clustering, and pattern abstraction. It produces output in the form of well-typed program snippets which document initialization, method calls, assignments, looping constructs, and exception handling. In a human study involving over 150 participants, 82% of our generated examples were found to be at least as good at human-written instances and 94% were strictly preferred to state of the art code search.

We present a distributed algorithm for creating a modular shape by magnification. The input to the algorithm is presented with a small scale version of the desired shape and a magnification factor m. The output of the system is the object that corresponds to the m-fold magnification of the input shape. We describe and analyze a distributed algorithm for this capability and present simulation results. Making shapes by magnification can be viewed as a programming interface for creating objects by programming matter.

Implementation of Hardware-Accelerated Scalable Parallel Random Number Generators

The Scalable Parallel Random Number Generators (SPRNGs) library is widely used in computational science applications such as Monte Carlo simulations since SPRNG supports fast, parallel, and scalable random number generation with good statistical properties. In order to accelerate SPRNG, we develop a Hardware-Accelerated version of SPRNG (HASPRNG) on the Xilinx XC2VP50 Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in the Cray XD1 that produces identical results. HASPRNG includes the reconfigurable logic for FPGAs along with a programming interface which performs integer random number generation. To demonstrate HASPRNG for Reconfigurable Computing (RC) applications, we also develop a Monte Carlo pi-estimator for the Cray XD1. The RC Monte Carlo pi-estimator shows a 19.1X speedup over the 2.2 GHz AMD Opteron processor in the Cray XD1. In this paper we describe the FPGA implementation for HASPRNG and a pi-estimator example application exploiting the finegrained parallelism and mathematical properties of the SPRNG algorithm.

Efficient and scalable support for RDF/OWL data storage, loading, inferencing and querying, in conjunction with already available support for enterprise level data and operations reliability requirements, can make databases suitable to act as enterprise-level RDF/OWL repository and hence become a viable platform for building semantic applications for the enterprise environments. This tutorial outlines the requirements for supporting semantic technologies in databases including bulk load and data manipulation operations, inference based on RDFS, OWL and user-defined rules, and support for SPARQL queries. It also discusses the design choices for handling issues that arise in implementing support for storage and operations on large scale RDF/OWL data, and in general, touches upon the practical aspects related to RDF/OWL support that become important in enterprise environments. Semantic technologies support in Oracle Database is used as a case study to illustrate with concrete examples the key requirements and design issues.

The Bioverse is a framework for creating, warehousing and presenting biological information based on hierarchical levels of organisation. The framework is guided by a deeper philosophy of desiring to represent all relationships between all components of biological systems towards the goal of a wholistic picture of organismal biology. Data from various sources are combined into a single repository and a uniform interface is exposed to access it. The power of the approach of the Bioverse is that, due to its inclusive nature, patterns emerge from the acquired data and new predictions are made. The implementation of this repository (beginning with acquisition of source data, processing in a pipeline, and concluding with storage in a relational database) and interfaces to the data contained in it, from a programmatic application interface to a user friendly web application, are discussed. less

Modern web applications built using technologies such as AJAX, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silver-light interact with data in a different way compared to previous-generation applications. Data is now a first-class construct that is exchanged over the web independently from presentation information. Astoria is both a set of patterns and an actual implementation of a programming interface for data in the web. Astoria exposes data in a database over an HTTP interface and follows the REST architectural style for exploring and manipulating data. We demonstrate the URI patterns used by Astoria and their associated semantics, and the various data formats supported by the system. We explore specific requirements for the formats such as hyper-linking and usability for both retrieval and updates. We also demonstrate step by step how developers use Astoria to create custom data services on top of existing databases.
