Ease of programming and optimal parallel performance have historically been on the opposite side of a tradeoff, forcing the user to choose. With the advent of the Big Data era and rapid evolution of sequential algorithms, the data analytics community can no longer afford the tradeoff. We observed that several clustering algorithms often share common traits-particularly, algorithms belonging to same class of clustering exhibit significant overlap in processing steps. Here, we present our observation on domain patterns in Representative-based clustering algorithms and how they manifest as clearly identifiable programming patterns when mapped to a Domain Specific Language (DSL). We have integrated the signatures of these patterns in the DSL compiler for parallelism identification and automatic parallel code generation. Our experiments on different state-of-the-art parallelization frameworks shows that our system is able to achieve near-optimal speedup while requiring a fraction of the programming effort, making it an ideal choice for the data analytics community.

In this Work in Progress paper in the Research Category we report on existing concerns about Scratch programming, and introduce patterns as a possible solution. Scratch is a popular language for introducing students to programming, but there is a concern that the students might not be exposed to all the key elements of programming when the development environment tempts them to explore elements such as the range of sprites available. We propose the use of programming patterns as a measure of the sophistication of student work. To understand the importance of patterns we report on our initial work that analyzes a large number of projects from the public Scratch repository to evaluate how extensively the basic patterns appear in student work. This can help inform the improvement of teaching methods to include use of broader range of patterns.

In this paper, the hardware-software architecture of a Selective Laser Melting (SLM) system is outlined. The hardware-software architecture consists of a controller and a host computer. The Java-developed host computer software runs the following operations: viewing of 3D models, slicing of models saved in the STL format into files with a system-specific format, 2D editing and correction of data in the layers, control of the hardware during 3D printing, and generation of test models. The embedded software of the controller accepts commands and data from the host computer, controls the movement of mirrors of laser beam positioning in two coordinates and that of the build platform and the feed cartridge. The communication protocol built on USB or UDP (TCP/IP) provides the delivery of settings and print parameters into the controller. In addition, it enables state monitoring and control of the print command flow into the hardware. The slicing algorithms for different hatching and laser beam movement patterns are considered. The examples of models are shown, in which manual correction of the generated contours is required. The slicing and printing productivities are calculated. The problems of the programming technology (design) and software productivity management, such as the usage of patterns, graphical indexing, productivity profiling and parallel processing, are discussed.

Complex skill mastery requires not only acquiring individual basic component skills, but also practicing integrating such basic skills. However, traditional approaches to knowledge modeling, such as Bayesian knowledge tracing, only trace knowledge of each decomposed basic component skill. This risks early assertion of mastery or ineffective remediation failing to address skill integration. We introduce a novel integration-level approach to model learners' knowledge and provide fine-grained diagnosis: a Bayesian network based on a new kind of knowledge graph with progressive integration skills. We assess the value of such a model from multifaceted aspects: performance prediction, parameter plausibility, expected instructional effectiveness, and real-world recommendation helpfulness. Our experiments based on a Java programming tutor show that proposed model significantly improves two popular multiple-skill knowledge tracing models on all these four aspects.

Undergraduates and postgraduates in science subjects are increasingly expected to conduct their data analyses using R, SQL and Python. This requires of instructors to develop resources that get students up and running quickly. This study presents and evaluates a learning design that (1) uses a pattern-oriented tutorial to teach language-independent key operations for implementing data analytic queries, and (2) uses cheat sheets to show how these operations map onto language-specific syntax. The evaluation study (N=21) concludes that using this approach, two thirds of the data science novices sampled could implement simple to moderately complex queries in all the aforementioned languages within two hours. A permutation test moreover produced a significant main effect of language, with SQL ranking the highest in accuracy. The results form part of a general discussion on the merits and language-dependent feasibility of pattern-oriented aids for accelerated data science instruction.

Reusable Solutions for Implementing Usability Functionalities

Usability is a software system quality attribute. Although software engineers originally considered usability to be related exclusively to the user interface, it was later found to affect the core functionality of software applications. As of then, proposals for addressing usability at different stages of the software development cycle were researched. The objective of this paper is to present three reusable solutions at detailed design and programming level in order to effectively implement the Abort Operation, Progress Feedback and Preferences usability functionalities in web applications. To do this, an inductive research method was applied. We developed three web applications including the above usability functionalities as case studies. We looked for commonalities across the implementations in order to induce a general solution. The elements common to all three developed applications include: application scenarios, functionalities, responsibilities, classes, methods, attributes and code snippets. The findings were specified as an implementation-oriented design pattern and as programming patterns in three languages. Additional case studies were conducted in order to validate the proposed solution. The independent developers used the patterns to implement different applications for each case study. As a result, we found that solutions specified as patterns can be reused to develop web applications.

Edelweiss: Automatic Storage Reclamation for Distributed programming

Event Log Exchange (ELE) is a common programming pattern based on immutable state and messaging. ELE sidesteps traditional challenges in distributed consistency, at the expense of introducing new challenges in designing space reclamation protocols to avoid consuming unbounded storage. We introduce Edelweiss, a sublanguage of Bloom that provides an ELE programming model, yet automatically reclaims space without programmer assistance. We describe techniques to analyze Edelweiss programs and automatically generate application-specific distributed space reclamation logic. We show how Edelweiss can be used to elegantly implement a variety of communication and distributed storage protocols;the storage reclamation code generated by Edelweiss effectively garbage-collects state and often matches hand-written protocols from the literature.

Source code maintainability is a desired software feature. It can be achieved in many different ways. For example, software engineers recommend the use of patterns as commonly known and proven quality solutions to existing problems. patterns are usually defined at three basic granularity levels, and are classified as architectural, design, and programming patterns (idioms). The paper presents the results of an experiment conducted at Wroclaw University of Technology which aimed at checking the influence of Java idioms on source code maintainability. The obtained results confirmed that using idioms is a beneficial practice, especially in corrective maintenance.

Currently, workflow systems are either XML based or component based. Both paradigms have usability deficiencies. XML is not designed for procedural programming. Legacy code is difficult to adapt to component based systems. We propose a new paradigm by adding workflow keywords to an existing high-level language. This approach, called GroupSpeak, uses a procedural style of programming and allows for easy introduction of workflow patterns to legacy code. The programmer can leverage their existing knowledge of the high-level language to easily add workflow capabilities to their applications.
