In order to meet the needs of students practice in program design and to develop style, the paper develops the software which can program training on the Web browser. The program training software uses DHTML technology of the client to realize interaction with the students and dynamic display of processing, and uses AJAX technology combined with server-side data access technology to get teachers template code. The software sets teachers template programs as matched objective. Compare with teachers template programs, it checks the correctness of the input process of the students. So it will guide the students to standardly program, make them grasp programming ideas of the typical problems, and enhance their ability of practice and thinking.

Assessing programming education needs of primary and secondary teachers in Guangxi border areas

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) education shows shortcomings in China's border areas. To bridge the gap in programming education between border and developed regions, enhancing the programming instructional capacity of primary and secondary school educators in border areas has emerged as a key strategic priority. This study employed a questionnaire survey via an online educational platform targeting educators in the Guangxi border region, exploring the current state of programming education and the professional development needs of teachers in these areas. Through the analysis of teachers' basic profiles, their participation in training, and their training needs, three key constraints are identified: (1) Gender, age, and fundamental differences in the programming proficiency of teachers across different regions;(2) programming training opportunities are scarce and unevenly distributed, with teachers' training needs exhibiting distinct characteristics;(3) the shortage of programming resources represents a significant barrier to the development of programming education in border regions. This study suggests four strategic interventions: (1) an implementation strategy of precision training;(2) innovation in mixed training models;(3) adaptation and allocation of regional resources;and (4) systemic guarantees and ecological reconstruction. These recommendations and countermeasures aim to enhance the quality of educational and training programs in primary and secondary schools within border regions, providing practical guidance for the development of teacher training in underdeveloped regions with limited educational resources.

This paper introduces the Programmed Visual Content Comparison (PVCC) for collaborative programming learning. The PVCC is based on comparing two displayed visual objects produced by programming. This feature enables candidates to take the tests in a lighthearted and fun manner because they only judge "which is more difficult." The test based on the PVCC method works well to assess a candidate's programming abilities related to Panoramic Understanding of programming (PUP). We conducted a collaborative learning experiment with students in a programming class using the PVCC method. This experiment method contains two phases of activity. First, each candidate answers a problem with the reason for the judge. In the second (collaborative phase), candidates discuss their answers and reasons in a group and then make the group answer with its explanation. The result from the experiment suggests a potential that collaborative learning facilitated by the PVCC method is beneficial for students in programming education by improving understanding and problem-solving skills in programming.

Predicting Low and High Student Performance in programming Education Using PLS-SEM Algorithms

The study uses the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) algorithm to predict the factors affecting the programming performance (PPE) (low, high) of the students receiving computer programming education. The participants of the study consist of 763 students who received programming education. In the analysis of the data, the PLS-SEM method was used with the help of the SmartPLS 4 program. In addition, multigroup SEM was used to examine the differentiation of models between groups with low and high PPE. According to the research results, the percentage of explanation of the model is relatively high in the group with high PPE compared to the group with low performance. According to the findings of the study, age, education level, general academic achievement, and PPE scores were found to be related. In addition, programming experience, attitude, and programming empowerment are related to PPE. The most important of some of the limitations of this study is that the data collected from the participants are based on their self-reports. The results of this study may have important contributions to the differentiation of approaches toward low and high-performing students in supporting programming education. This type of research can help design relevant interventions for students experiencing failures in programming education.

In this study, the effects of Arduino IDE and C++ programming languages were investigated on the computational thinking skills of preservice teachers. The Computational Thinking Skills Scale was administered to preservice teachers. Firstly, a basic programming training was given and then it was asked to create group projects on a voluntary basis. Six of twelve groups created a project using the Arduino IDE platform and the other six created one using the C++ programming language. Accordingly, a significant difference, which is in favour of the post-test, was found in the scores of pre-tests and post-tests of Arduino IDE groups in the scale factors;creativity, algorithmic thinking, critical thinking and the total score of the scale. No significant difference was found in cooperativity and problem solving factors. Also, the results of the study did not reveal any significant difference between the scores of pre and post-tests of C++ project groups and overall scores of different groups.

The USA Computing Olympiad (USACO) supports pre-college computing around the world through computer programming competitions and training materials. The USACO holds six Internet-based contests each year. Unique in the contest community, they are open to every pre-college programmer around the world at no charge;feature three divisions of escalating difficulty and one beginning level contest;are machine-graded, with instant feedback on simple errors found during submission;are analyzed with solutions and results provided;are translated into foreign languages for the contestants;are created by a handful of coaches with the help of assistant coaches who interact through a comprehensive website that collects problems, test data, solutions, data validators, and discussions. The USACO has reached out to the international community by inviting international students to challenge our students at the USA International Computing Olympiad (USAICO) here at Colorado College during our summer program;providing a discussion form on our website for contests and training pages;grading and ranking international students along with our own;providing a grading system for IOI 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008 (expected). In April, the USACO conducts the US Open, a proctored exam for US students, and, one day later, an Internet exam for international students. Based on the results of these contests, 16 students are invited to an all-expense-paid training camp in the early summer, where 4 students are selected to be the US Team at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). The USACO is sponsored by USENIX, SANS, and IBM. All USACO contest administration is staffed by 100% volunteers.

This paper discusses the practical applicability of the Programmed Visual Contents Comparison Method (PVCC) to IT employees. The PVCC is an aptitude and ability test to evaluate programming ability related to the Panoramic Understanding of programming (PUP). We perform two types of experiments. The first is an individual appraisal. Candidates who have different programming education and different job experiences undergo tests and provide feedback after seeing the correct answers and their explanations. The second type is collaborative learning. Several candidates view the same question and discuss the correct answer. Results demonstrate that the test adequately measures the ability of candidates. Moreover, the test can assess a person's aptitude for PUP through working in an IT company, even having never programed. Results also demonstrate that the test is suitable for both self-diagnosing and collaborative learning in IT companies, because candidates can take the tests in a lighthearted and fun manner.

Developing Computational Thinking Skills of High School Students: Design-Based Learning Activities and programming Tasks

This paper is to investigate into the effect of design-based learning (DBL) activities and programing training on computational thinking (CT) skills. In total, 119 from the ninth grade students were recruited for this study conducted within the scope of Computer Science course. A semi-experimental research design was adopted, and DBL activities were included in one group, while the other group attended in the programming training took place. The duration of the study was planned as fourteen weeks and the data were obtained in the 1st and 14th weeks of the experimentation. During the analysis phase, the paired sample t test was employed for in-group comparisons, whereas the independent samples t test analysis was utilized to make comparisons between groups. This study finds evidence to suggest that there was a significant positive development at CT levels after the experimentation in both groups. The most remarkable result to emerge from the data is that DBL activities had also a similar effect on CT skills compared to programming training considered as important in teaching CT and developing it. Further inquiries should be undertaken in the relationship between DBL and programming training with CT skill through qualitative or mixed research designs in depth.

In a prior study we introduced the Programmed Visual Contents Comparison Method (PVCC) for assessment of programming abilities related with Panoramic Understanding of programming (PUP). With this method, by comparing two or more output pictures produced by programming samples (a question), a student must decide which one of the programs producing them is more difficult to build with programming, or, if the difficulty is similar for all of them. This study reported also the results of a test to evaluate this method's validity performed with groups of students of diverse fields. Validity was verified by comparing the initial programming ability reported by programming professors of these groups with the test results;this confirmed that the PVCC method worked well to find programming abilities related with PUP. In this paper we propose an enhancement to the PVCC Method based on the preparation of New Questions where two or more samples displaying both input data and output pictures are shown. By adding input data to output pictures and focus strictly on the programming processes needed to obtain these pictures from the provided input data, we aim to broaden the range of discernible programming abilities related with PUP. The results of a test performed to verify the suitability of New Questions performed with professors of programming is also reported.
