The effects of performance measurement on megaproject performance: the moderating effects of project complexity

PurposeMegaproject performance measurement (MPM) has received great attention in the project management community, but it primarily focused on the design of performance measures or frameworks. Yet, whether MPM utilization can improve megaproject performance and how project actors use MPM to improve megaproject performance is less well understood. This study aims to investigate whether and how the use of MPM can contribute to better megaproject ***/methodology/approachThrough the lens of the lever of control, this study conceptualizes MPM utilization as diagnostic use and interactive use. A holistic research model and related hypotheses integrating MPM use, project complexity and megaproject performance were established. The model was validated using a partial square-structural equation modeling *** on 214-megaproject data collected through a questionnaire survey in China, the results show positive effects of diagnostic use and interactive use on megaproject performance. Both, however, have substitutional interaction effects. The moderating results suggest that the higher project complexity weakens the positive effects of MPM utilization on megaproject ***/valueThis study advances megaprojects performance measurement and management literature by validating the value of MPM utilization on performance. It also presents practical implications for project managers to improve performance by appropriate MPM utilization.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to develop a project complexity index (PCI) model using the best and worst method (BWM) to quantitatively analyze the impact of project complexities on the performance of metro rail ***/methodology/approachThis study employed a two-phase research methodology. The first phase identifies complexities through a literature review and expert discussions and categorizes different types of complexities in metro rail projects. In the second phase, BWM, a robust multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique, was used to prioritize key complexities, and a PCI model was developed. Further, the developed PCI was validated through case studies, and sensitivity analysis was performed to check the accuracy and applicability of the developed PCI *** analysis revealed that location complexity exerted the most substantial influence on project performance, followed by environmental, organizational, technological and contractual complexities. Sensitivity analysis revealed the varying impacts of complexity indices on the overall project *** implicationsThe study's findings offer a novel approach for measuring project complexity's impact on metro rail projects. This allows stakeholders to make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently and plan ***/valueThe existing studies on project complexity identification and quantification were limited to megaprojects other than metro rail projects. Efforts to quantitatively study and analyze the impact of project complexity on metro rail projects are left unattended. The developed PCI model and its validation contribute to the field by providing a definite method to measure and manage complexity in metro rail projects.

Purposeproject complexity (PC) governs project success, but the project management literature primarily focuses on performance measures and rarely examines the complexity factors, especially for megaprojects. This paper aims to determine the most significant complexity factors for the railway megaprojects in ***/methodology/approachA mixed approach using the Delphi and best-worst method (BWM) helped to identify, validate and determine the most critical factors that require intervention to diminish variance from project *** BWM resulted in stakeholder management, followed by organizational and technological complexity as significant complexity factors, and the varied interests of the stakeholder as the most important among the 40 *** implicationsThe finding indicates the necessity for strategic, tactical and operational-level interventions to effectively manage the complexity affecting project efficiency because of the varied stakeholders. This paper will guide the project and general managers to prioritize their resources to handle complexity for effective project performance measured in terms of time, cost and quality and help them make strategic decisions. The research findings of this study are expected to help researchers and practitioners in better planning and smoother execution of projects. Effects of project-generic and project-specific knowledge complementarities on value capture: The roles of non-coercive power use and project complexity

Complementary knowledge of partner firms in inter-firm new product development (NPD) projects plays a significant role in their value capture. Partner firms from different areas of expertise provide project-generic and project-specific complementary knowledge. However, it remains unclear how different types of knowledge complementarity affect value capture, which is a comprehensive concept containing tangible and intangible value in an NPD project. To fill this gap, this research draws on resource dependence theory to examine how and when project-generic and project-specific knowledge complementarities affect value capture through the use of non-coercive power in an NPD project. The results demonstrate that the use of non-coercive power plays a positive mediating role. Furthermore, project-specific knowledge complementarity significantly impacts the use of non-coercive power more than project-generic knowledge complementarity in an NPD project. However, as project complexity increases, project-generic knowledge complementarity has a more positive impact on the use of non-coercive power in the project. This research contributes to value capture literature by extending knowledge complementarity to the project level and exploring the critical role of non-coercive power use in comprehensive value capture in an NPD project.

Purpose project complexity is a critical issue that has increasingly attracted attention in both academic and practical circles. However, there are still many gaps in the research on project complexity, such as the differentiated conceptualization of complexity and disjointed operationalization in the measurements. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct a systematic and detailed literature review on the concept, dimensions, assessment, and underlying mechanisms of project complexity. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review methodology was applied to search and synthesize the research on project complexity, and a final sample of 74 journal articles was identified. Findings This study first summarizes the concepts of project complexity from three different theoretical perspectives, and then identifies different approaches of measurement, evaluation, or simulation to assess project complexity. This paper finally establishes an integrative framework to synthesize the antecedents, mediators and moderators, and outcomes of project complexity, generating four suggestions for future research. Originality/value This study summarizes the definition and operationalization of project complexity to reduce the discrepancies in the existing research and offers an integrative framework to offer a broad overview of the current understanding of project complexity, providing a potential way forward for addressing project complexity.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of stakeholder integration and project complexity on information technology (IT) projects in Kenya. The following research question guided our inquiry: what is the influence of project complexity and stakeholder integration on the performance of IT projects in Kenya? Design/methodology/approach - To advance the current understanding of the effect of stakeholder integration and project complexity on IT projects, multiple regressions were used to predict how project complexity and stakeholder integration influence project performance. Both government-funded and privately funded IT projects from a developing country were examined. Findings - The study found that any project's complexity and stakeholder integration levels offer a distinctive contribution to its success. Theoretically, the study contributes to linkages between stakeholder integration and project complexity concerning IT project performance. Through the adoption of actionable research and theoretical elaboration, we have shown that the successful execution of IT projects is driven by the successful integration of stakeholders and monitoring the level of complexity at each phase of the project. Originality/value - The findings of this study add to the burgeoning literature on the performance of IT projects and come with several managerial implications as well. It brings to the fore the concept of stakeholder integration as an essential element of project success. The findings suggest that the inclusion of stakeholder integration into corporate decisions, strategies and policies can be an asset to the production of sustainable competitive advantages needed during the implementation of IT projects in government entities and organisations. As shown in this study, all the above require a collaborative platform allowing for data sharing among diverse stakeholders to ameliorate distrust or lack of information.

Enhancing cost estimation performance through effective organizational control: the moderating role of project complexity in construction projects

Accurate cost estimation is important for the success of any project, particularly in complex industries like construction. However, many organizations fail to recognize the importance of good cost estimation performance. Previous research has identified various factors that impact cost estimation performance, with most under organizational controls, including input, behaviour, and output controls. Despite this, the causal relationships between these controls and cost estimation performance have not been thoroughly explored, especially from the perspective of diverse project complexities. To address this gap, this paper aimed to evaluate the effect of organizational controls on cost estimation performance, including the moderating effect of project complexity. Data were collected from 152 respondents in Malaysian construction firms, and a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) method was used for data analysis. This paper reveals that all organizational controls significantly influenced cost estimation performance dimensions, except for one relationship. Additionally, only three moderating effects were found to be significant. These results highlight the importance of effective organizational controls in achieving better cost estimation performance across various levels of project complexity. By implementing the right control modes, organizations can improve their cost estimation performance and enhance project success.

Blessing in disguise: a multilevel investigation of the role of project complexity in relationship between workplace bullying and employee psychological capital

This multilevel research delves into pivotal aspects of workplace bullying through the novel conceptualization, empirical capture, and comprehensive estimation of the simultaneous effect of abusive supervision and coworker bullying on employee psychological capital. Grounded in Social cognitive theory, multilevel SEM analyses were used to estimate multi-wave and multi-source data. The findings revealed significant and negative impact of abusive supervision and coworker bullying on employee psychological capital, emphasizing the toxic consequences of workplace bullying. Interestingly, our results also revealed that project complexity can moderate these relations, with higher level of complexity serving as a strong protective factor against the adverse impact of workplace bullying. This research advances the field, provides valuable insights and significantly enriching the existing literature by utilizing a social cognitive framework to explain the impact of workplace bullying on employee psychological capital with project complexity serving as a moderating factor.

Linking shared leadership and project success in virtual project teams: a moderated mediation model of teamwork and project complexity

Purpose: In the modern virtual workplace, an organization's ability to complete projects successfully is essential to its future sustainability. Identifying the factors that contribute to successful project outcomes is crucial in project management research. This study seeks to examine how shared leadership affects the quality of teamwork and the success of information system development projects. It also explores how project complexity affects the success of information system development (ISD) projects in the context of virtual project teams, which are usually made up of knowledge workers with a lot of experience. Design/methodology/approach: Data collected from 509 virtual ISD project team members in Pakistan were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with bootstrapping to assess the effects of shared leadership on teamwork quality and project success. The study also assessed the mediation role of teamwork and the moderation effect of project complexity on the mediation effect of teamwork quality between shared leadership and project success relationship. Findings: The study found a positive correlation between shared leadership, teamwork quality, and project success. This study also revealed that teamwork quality mediates the association between shared leadership and project success. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that teamwork quality and project complexity moderate-mediate the relationship between shared leadership and project success. Practical implications: Shared leadership enhances project success in virtual teams by improving teamwork. It requires investment in team development and collaboration initiatives, which ultimately lead to project success. Originality/value: The findings complement previous research with new insights on behavioral dimensions of shared leadership and their effects on outcomes on the level of the individual. The study develops a binary logistic regression model to assess and measure complexity levels of a project. The complexity measures were statistically verified to create a basis for the model. The variable reduction process called Principle Component Analysis was used to combine the significant complexity indicators into component variables. The study enriches the complexity theoretical basis in the field of project management by providing an innovative approach that aids scholars and practitioners in assessing complexity levels based on the applicability of identified complexity measures. The research results also help facilitate the management process and formulate an appropriate complexity management plan.
