In this paper, we propose an efficient design of proportionality factors in the recently established algorithm named Krylov-proportionate normalized least mean-square (KPNLMS), which is an extention of the PNLMS algorithm to nonsparse (or dispersive) unknown systems by means of a Krylov subspace. The designing task takes a form of minimizing the number of iterations that is needed for an upper bound of the system mismatch to reach a specified target value. The minimization is performed under several constraints related to numerical stability, computational requirements, and nonnegativity, and its closed-form solution is derived. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed design significantly reduces the number of iterations needed to achieve target values of system mismatch especially when a low level of system mismatch is required.

A general framework is proposed to derive proportionate adaptive algorithms for sparse system identification. The proposed algorithmic framework employs the convex optimization and covers many traditional proportionate algorithms. Meanwhile, based on this framework, some novel proportionate algorithms could be derived too. In the simulations, we compare the new derived proportionate algorithm with the traditional ones, and demonstrate that it could provide faster convergence rate and tracking performance for both white and colored input in sparse system identification.

Pure delay estimator is a vital component in network echo cancellation systems targeting sparse echo paths with unknown pure delays. In this paper, the proportionate Normalized Least Mean Square (PNLMS) algorithm is applied to a sub-rate pure delay estimator. Compared with the Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm [1], the PNLMS algorithm can detect the pure delay faster but the increased computational complexity is high. To make the overall system more efficient for implementing on DSP platforms, two novel simplified proportionate adaptive algorithms are proposed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms offer comparable performance of pure delay estimation as the PNLMS algorithm with much less computational complexity.

Two proportionate affine projection sign algorithms (APSAs) are proposed for network echo cancellation (NEC) applications where the impulse response is often real-valued with sparse coefficients and long filter length. The proposed proportionate-type algorithms can achieve fast convergence and low steady-state misalignment by adopting a proportionate regularization matrix to the APSA. Benefiting from the characteristics of l(1)-norm optimization, affine projection, and proportionate matrix, the new algorithms are more robust to impulsive interferences and colored input than the proportionate least mean squares (PNLMS) algorithm and the robust proportionate affine projection algorithm (Robust PAPA). The new algorithms also achieve much faster convergence rate in sparse impulse responses than the original APSA and the normalized sign algorithm (NSA). The new algorithms are robust to all types of NEC impulse response with different sparseness without the need to change parameters or estimate the sparseness of the impulse response. The computational complexity of the new algorithms is lower than the affine projection algorithm (APA) family due to the elimination of the matrix inversion.

In this paper, a new family of proportionate normalized least mean square (PNLMS) adaptive algorithms that improve the performance of identifying block-sparse systems is proposed. The main proposed algorithm, called block-sparse PNLMS (BS-PNLMS), is based on the optimization of a mixed norm of the adaptive filter's coefficients. It is demonstrated that both the NLMS and the traditional PNLMS are special cases of BS-PNLMS. Meanwhile, a block-sparse improved PNLMS (BS-IPNLMS) is also derived for both sparse and dispersive impulse responses. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed BS-PNLMS and BS-IPNLMS algorithms outperformed the NLMS, PNLMS and IPNLMS algorithms with only a modest increase in computational complexity.

For a network canceler, whose input is mainly speech, the proportionate affine projection algorithm (PAPA) is expected to present faster convergence speed than the existing proportionate NLMS algorithms. However, the performance criteria of fast convergence speed conflicts with low steady-state misalignment when a constant step-size parameter is applied. In this article we introduce a variable step-size technique into the PAPA in order to achieve both fast convergence speed and low steady-state misalignment. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can greatly improve the steady-state misalignment without sacrificing the fast convergence speed of the PAPA.
