pseudo-random binary sequence interrogation technique for gas sensors

Electrically conducting organic polymers are widely used as a means of gas, odour or aroma analysis using multi-element array techniques coupled with direct current (d.c.) interrogation techniques. Recently, it has been established that the use of alternating current (a.c.) interrogation gives rise to improved performance. In addition, the need to use multi-element arrays is much reduced since a single sensor can be interrogated at a wide range of frequencies. This paper describes the use of pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) as interrogation signals for semi-conducting organic polymer gas sensors. Preliminary experiments have been conducted upon volatile vapours and results are presented herein. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an approach to the estimation of PEM fuel cell impedance by utilizing pseudorandom binary sequence as a perturbation signal and continuous wavelet transform with Morlet mother wavelet. With the approach, the impedance characteristic in the frequency band from 0.1 Hz to 500 Hz is identified in 60 seconds, approximately five times faster compared to the conventional singlesine approach. The proposed approach was experimentally evaluated on a single PEM fuel cell of a larger fuel cell stack. The quality of the results remains at the same level compared to the single-sine approach. Fast impedance measurement method for large capacity batteries using chirp and filtered pseudo-random binary sequence

Fast impedance measurement with well-constructed excitation signals is crucial for battery internal states analysis and faults diagnosis. The pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) is a promising time-efficient excitation signal, but it lacks power content in the low-frequency range and is susceptible to high-frequency harmonics beyond the measurement limits, especially for square large-capacity batteries. Motivated by this, this paper proposes a novel parallel-connected signal derived from filtered PRBS and chirp sequence to boost low-frequency components while mitigating high-frequency effects. Meanwhile, to enhance accuracy in measuring square largecapacity batteries with low impedance, the paper introduces a differential amplification circuit to improve voltage response robustness against noise. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of this method, achieving precise impedance measurements across the 0.1 Hz-1000 Hz range in just 10.24 s. With different states of charges, temperatures, and battery types, errors of the measurement are below 3.67 %.

Li-Ion Battery and Supercapacitor Modeling for Electric Vehicles Based on Pulse - pseudo random binary sequence

Energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors are arousing a growing interest in many areas of industrial applications since they allow improving the dynamic response and efficiency. In this sense, the availability of electric models of batteries and supercapacitors is necessary for the correct sizing, control, and energy management of power systems. In order to identify the parameters of the equivalent electric model, the identification current profile is often a pulse of charge or discharge. Subsequently, these models are validated with a current verification profile. However, the verification profile compared to the identification profile is more dynamic in amplitude and frequency, producing validation errors due to the identification signal's limited bandwidth. This paper proposes a novel Pulse - pseudo random binary sequence (Pulse - PRBS) identification current profile, with similar spectral characteristics to the verification profile, in order to improve the modeling accuracy. The parameters of a Lithium-ion battery and a supercapacitor are obtained with this new identification current profile and the Optimization Toolbox of Matlab, using the electrical models in Simulink or Simscape. Finally, the models are validated with the Urban Driving Cycle ECE-15 and the Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) for electric vehicle applications.

This paper presents the definition of perfect punctured binary sequence pair and the combinatorial admissible conditions for searching the perfect punctured binary sequence pairs and proves that all of the pseudo-random binary sequences satisfy these conditions. Computer calculation verifies that the pseudo-random binary sequences with length up to N=127 can be easily turned into perfect punctured binary sequence pairs.

Overfitting effect of artificial neural network based nonlinear equalizer: from mathematical origin to transmission evolution

Overfitting effect of artificial neural network(ANN) based nonlinear equalizer(NLE) leads to a trap of bit error ratio(BER) overestimation in optical fiber communication system, especially when the performance is evaluated by the commonly-used pseudo-random binary sequence(PRBS). First, we mathematically investigate the PRBS generation and Gray code mapping rules, in comparison with the use of Mersenne Twister random sequence(MTRS). Under the condition of a symbol erasure channel, we identify that ANN can recognize both the PRBS generation and symbol mapping rules, by increasing the weights of NLE at specific positions, whereas the MTRS is currently safe owing to the limited input length of current ANN based NLE. Then, we design four channel models of fiber optical transmission to experimentally examine various impairments on the evolution of overfitting effect. When both the additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel and the bandwidth limited channel are considered, the mitigation of overfitting becomes possible by the use of pruned PRBS(P-PRBS) training set with removing the generation and mapping rules determined input symbols. However, as for both the chromatic dispersion(CD) uncompensated channel and the CD managed channel, the overfitting effect becomes serious, because both CD and fiber nonlinearity induced inter-symbol interference(ISI) is beneficial for ANN to identify the PRBS symbol rules. Finally,possible solutions to mitigate the overfitting effect are summarized.

Some Notes on Generalized Cyclotomic sequences of Length pq

We review the constructions of two main kinds of generalized cyclotomic binary sequences with length pq （the product with two distinct primes）. One is the White-generalized cyclotomic sequences, the other is the Ding-Helleseth（DH, for short）-generalized cyclotomic sequences. We present some new pseudo-random properties of DH-generalized cyclotomic sequences using the theory of character sums instead of the theory of cyclotomy, which is a conventional method for investigating generalized cyclotomic sequences.

Identification of hydrodynamic coefficients of a ship manoeuvring model based on PRBS input

A new method is proposed to obtain accurate hydrodynamic coefficients of 3-DOF ship models. This method includes two parts: identification algorithm and identification input design. Firstly, the manoeuvring modeling group model of an underactuated ship is introduced. Secondly, the nonlinear model of the ship is converted into a linear form by using the X-swapping technique. An on-line identification law, which is introduced for identifi-cation under relaxed excitation conditions, is used to estimate the unknown hydrodynamic coefficients of the ship dynamic model. Thirdly, two pseudo-random binary sequence signals are chosen as the identification in-puts to excite the rudder and the propeller, which can improve identification performance. Finally, a simulation example is put forward to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed identification method.

A Fully-Integrated 77-GHz UWB pseudo-random Noise Radar Transceiver With a Programmable sequence Generator in SiGe Technology

This paper describes a fully-integrated 77-GHz ultra-wideband pseudo-random noise (PRN) radar transceiver in a Silicon-Germanium technology. The transceiver is equipped with a programmable pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) generator, which is realized in a current-mode logic topology and can be operated with a clock rate of up to 4.25 GHz to enable a range resolution of 3.5 cm. The signal generation unit is simplified by including a frequency multiplier to create a 76.5-GHz carrier signal from a single 4.25-GHz input, that is also used as a clock for the PRBS generator. The transceiver achieves a phase noise of -105.3 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset frequency, a transmit output power of 6.2 dBm, a receive gain of 24 dB and an input-referred 1-dB compression point of -14 dBm. Track&hold circuits included in the receive path allow the use of a sub-sampling technique to reduce the IF data rate down to 1 MHz. Radar measurements with two PRN transceivers with different primitive polynomials were done concurrently to show a fundamental function of the programmable PRBS generator. Radar measurements with the PRN and the frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) principles show comparable results and the PRN radar proves to be a real alternative to the FMCW radar.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with pattern modulation

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCx GC) modulators normally transfer primary column effluent to the head of the secondary column as a series of sharp pulses. Such pulses are produced with time-varying temperature gradients in thermal modulation or with time-varying flow patterns in flow modulation. Thermal modulators produce narrow peaks at optimal flow rates, but require large amounts of consumables or a highly engineered heating/cooling system. Flow modulators involve simpler hardware and no additional consumables. However, flow modulators require a large increase in secondary column flow or transfer only a small portion of the primary effluent to the secondary column. This study examines a new method of producing GCx GC separations with a flow modulator. Instead of injecting narrow pulses, the modulator transfers primary effluent to the secondary column in the form of an intricate injection pattern. The detector signal is deconvoluted and converted to a two-dimensional chromatogram. The high duty cycle of the technique (>50%) leads to deconvoluted peaks with twenty times greater intensity than those produced by conventional modulation with a Deans switch modulator. Pattern modulation can be produced without requiring elevated carrier flows. This study evaluates the efficacy of pattern modulation GCx GC by analyzing a standard mixture of 43 oxygenated organic compounds and an E85 fuel sample. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
