The paper brings into evidence the inherent flaws of the tent map when used for generating binary sequences for cryptographic purpose. In this respect, the possibility to use tent map parameter as element of the secret key is evaluated. An original method to estimate the tent map parameter from binary sequences generated using a threshold equal to 0.5 is presented. Some proposed counter measures are supported both theoretically and experimentally.

This paper describes a time domain channel sounder based on pseudorandom binary sequences. The channel sounder system consists of several off-the-shelf laboratory instruments connected together and controlled from PC. Frequency band of interest is the unlicensed ultra wide band, 3-11 GHz. The system's parameters are discussed and compared to conventional solution, which uses vector network analyzer (VNA). Crucial feature of the proposed system is fast measurement speed. Example measurements are provided and compared to the measurements performed using the VNA.

This paper describes the implementation of a 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulation (4-PAM) receiver consisting of a 6-bit time-interleaved successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (TI-SAR ADC), followed by a fully digital speculative 2-tap decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) operating at one-fourth of the modulation rate. The receiver, implemented in an experimental chip fabricated in 32nm SOI CMOS, is designed to recover data at 56 Gb/s over a channel with an attenuation of 11 dB at 14 GHz. The power consumption of the receiver is 202.7mW at a supply of 1.2V, achieving an overall energy efficiency of 3.62 pJ/b. The DFE along with area-optimized register arrays and memory-control buffers occupies an area of 0.154 x 0.169mm(2). Experimental results demonstrating a BER<10(-8) are obtained using a (2(7)-1)-bit pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS-7).

Compressive sampling theory describes methods to reconstruct signals sampled at sub-Nyquist rates. The theory assumes that the signals are sparse in the frequency domain or in the time domain and requires a random sampling process. This paper describes compressive sampling experiments using a 6 Msps ADC (THS1206) and a C6000 DSP. The sampling instants are defined by pseudorandom binary sequences. The input signals used in our experiments are sine signals and binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) signals.

Existence of cyclic Hadamard difference sets and its relation to binary sequences with ideal autocorrelation

Balanced binary sequences with ideal autocorrelation are equivalent to (v, k, λ)-cyclic Hadamard difference sets with v = 4n - 1, k = 2n - 1, λ = n - 1 for some positive integer n. Every known cyclic Hadamard difference set has one of the following three types of v : (1) v = 4n - 1 is a prime. (2) v is a product of twin primes. (3) v = 2ⁿ - 1 for n = 2, 3, ⋯. It is conjectured that all cyclic Hadamard difference sets have parameter v which falls into one of the three types. The conjecture has been previously confirmed for n < 10000 except for 17 cases not fully investigated. In this paper, four smallest cases among these 17 cases are examined and the conjecture is confirmed for all v ≤ 3435. In addition, all the inequivalent cyclic Hadamard difference sets with v = 2ⁿ - 1 for n ≤ 10 are listed and classified according to known construction methods.

Linear Complexity of Some binary sequences Derived from Fermat Quotients

We determined the linear complexity of a family of p2-periodic binary threshold sequences and a family of p2-periodic binary sequences constructed using the Legendre symbol,both of which are derived from Fermat quotients modulo an odd prime *** 2 is a primitive element modulo p2,the linear complexity equals to p2-p or p2-1,which is very close to the period and it is large enough for cryptographic purpose.

Revisiting the frequency domain: the multiple and partial coherence of cerebral blood flow velocity in the assessment of dynamic cerebral autoregulation

Despite advances in modelling dynamic autoregulation, only part of the variability of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in the low frequency range has been explained. We investigate whether a multivariate representation can be used for this purpose. pseudorandom sequences were used to inflate thigh cuffs and to administer 5% CO2. Multiple and partial coherence were estimated, using arterial blood pressure (ABP), end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) and resistance area product as input and CBFV as output variables. The inclusion of second and third input variables increased the amount of CBFV variability that can be accounted for (p < 10(-4) in both cases). Partial coherence estimates in the low frequency range (< 0.07 Hz) were not influenced by the use of thigh cuffs, but CO2 administration had a statistically significant effect (p < 10(-4) in all cases). We conclude that the inclusion of additional inputs of a priori known physiological significance can help account for a greater amount of CBFV variability and may represent a viable alternative to more conventional non-linear modelling. The results of partial coherence analysis suggest that dynamic autoregulation and CO2 reactivity are likely to be the result of different physiological mechanisms.

Based on the cyclotomy classes of extension fields, a family of binary cyclotomic sequences are constructed and their pseudorandom measures (i.e., the well-distribution measure and the correlation measure of order k) are estimated using certain exponential sums. A lower bound on the linear complexity profile is also presented in terms of the correlation measure.

The assessment of cerebral autoregulation (CA) relies mostly on methods that modulate arterial blood pressure (ABP). Despite advances, the gold standard of assessment remains elusive and clinical practicality is limited. We investigate a novel approach of assessing CA, consisting of the intermittent application of thigh cuffs using square wave sequences. Our aim was to increase ABP variability whilst minimizing volunteer discomfort, thus improving assessment acceptability. Two random square wave sequences and two maximum pressure settings (80 and 150 mmHg) were used, corresponding to four manoeuvres that were conducted in random order after a baseline recording. The intermittent application of thigh cuffs resulted in an amplitude dependent increase in ABP (p = 0.001) and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) variability (p = 0.026) compared to baseline. No statistically significant differences in mean heart rate or heart rate variability were observed (p = 0.108 and p = 0.350, respectively), suggesting that no significant sympathetic response was elicited. No significant differences in the CBFV step response were observed, suggesting no distortion of autoregulatory parameters resulted from the use of thigh cuffs. We conclude that pseudorandom binary sequences are an effective and safe alternative for increasing ABP variability. This new approach shows great promise as a tool for the robust assessment of CA.
