We propose using punctured convolutional code for a Discrete Multitone (DMT) Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) system to improve the data rate performance of ADSL. The theoretical performance of the systems with single coding rate for all subchannels, and with adaptive coding rate for each subchannel are presented respectively. It is found that the data rate performance of the proposed system is higher than the uncoded system.

This paper proposes an adaptive modulation system with a punctured convolutional code for land mobile communications to achieve high quality, high bit rate, and high spectral efficient data transmission in multipath fading environments. The proposed system adaptively controls the coding rate of the punctured convolutional code, symbol rate, and modulation level according to the instantaneous fading channel conditions. During good channel conditions, the modulation parameters are selected to increase the transmission rate as much as possible with satisfying a certain transmission quality. As channel conditions become worse, lower rate modulation parameters are applied or transmission is stopped. The performances in fading environments are evaluated theoretically and by computer simulations. The results show that the proposed system can realize higher quality transmission without the degradation in average bit rate compared to conventional adaptive modulation systems.

Partial response signaling with maximum likelihood detection (PRML) systems using a rate 11/12 punctured convolution code (PCC) as a recording code in digital magnetic recording are proposed. The bit error rate (BER) performance for several PRML systems for the rate 11/12PCC is obtained by computer simulation and compared with that for the conventional rate 8/9 code. It is shown that among these PRML systems, E(2)PR4ML systems for the rate 11/12PCC outperform those for the rate 8/9 code and provide an SNR advantage of about 3.4 dB at a BER of 10(-4) and a normalized linear density of 3. A punctured convolutional coded PR4ML system for digital magnetic recording, which applies a punctured coding method to the convolutionalcode and records the puncturedcode sequences on two tracks, is proposed. In this study, the bit error rate performance of the proposed system is obtained by computer simulation taking account of partial erasure, which is one of the nonlinear distortions at high densities, and it is compared with those of a conventional 8/9 coded PR4ML system and an I-NRZI coded PR4ML system. The results show that the proposed system is hardly affected by partial erasure and exhibits good performance in high-density recording. A bit error rate of 10(-4) can be achieved with SNR's of approximately 13.2 dB and 9.1 dB less than those of the conventional 8/9 coded and I-NRZI coded PR4ML systems, respectively, at a normalized linear density of 3.

Puncturing is one of the methods of increasing the code rate, and the original code before puncturing is called the mother code. Any (N,K) convolutionalcode is obtainable by puncturing some (n,1) mother codes. The objective of a blind recognition of a channel code is to obtain its generator from the intercepted noisy bit stream. The process of the blind recognition of punctured convolutional codes consists of two parts: the reconstruction of the PGM of the (N,K) punctured convolutional code and the searching process of the mother code and its puncturing pattern. The process of finding the mother code is important for designing the optimum channel decoder. In this paper, a new searching algorithm with the computational complexity of O(K-4) polynomial operations is proposed, compared to the existing searching algorithm by M. Cluzeau which requires O(K-6) polynomial operations.

The authors present some properties of punctured convolutional codes, providing a construction method and a list of new, good, high-rate, long-memory puncturedcodes. The structure of puncturedcodes is examined and an upper bound on the free distance of puncturedcodes is derived, indicating that puncturedcodes are good codes. A construction method that generates the low-rate original codes which duplicate given known high-rate codes through perforation is proposed. Tables of puncturedcodes that duplicate the best known nonsystematic codes of rates 2/3 and 3/4 with memory lengths ranging from 3 to 23 and from 3 to 9, respectively, are given, together with the best known systematic codes for rates ranging from 2/3 to 7/8 with very long memory, M=44 through 48.

This paper presents an algorithm for blind recognition of punctured convo-lutional codes which is an important problem in adaptive modulation and coding. For a given finite sequence of convolutionalcode, the parity check matrix of the convolutionalcode is first computed by solving a linear system with adequate error tolerance. Then a minimal basic encoding matrix of the original convolutionalcode and its puncturing pattern are determined according to the known parity check matrix of the punctured convolutional code.

A punctured convolutional coded PR4ML system for digital magnetic recording is proposed. In this system, convolutional coding is used for recording and two-track coded recording is carried out after using the punctured method. In this study, the error rate performance was simulated by a computer to compare this system with the conventional I-NRZI coded PR4ML system. Our system was found to have superior characteristics in high-density recording, and an error rate of 10(-4) could be achieved for a normalized linear density of K = 3, even when the SN ratio was about 3.8 dB lower at the reading point than in the conventional system. We consider two methods that construct high rate punctured convolutional codes. First, we present best high rate R = (n - 1)/n punctured convolutional codes, for n = 5, 6, ... , 16, which are found by exhaustive searches. To obtain the best code, we use a regular convolutionalcode whose weight spectrum is equivalent to that of each punctured convolutional code. We search these regular equivalent codes for the best one. Next, we present a method that searches for good punctured convolutional codes by partial searches. This method searches the codes that are derived from R = 1/2 original codes obtained in the first method. By this method, we obtain some good punctured convolutional codes that have superior performance compared with that of the best codes.
