Dynamic Positioning Capability Analysis for Marine Vessels Based on A DPCap Polar Plot Program

Dynamic positioning capability(DPCap) analysis is essential in the selection of thrusters, in their configuration, and during preliminary investigation of the positioning ability of a newly designed vessel dynamic positioning *** analysis can help determine the maximum environmental forces, in which the DP system can counteract in given headings. The accuracy of the DPCap analysis is determined by the precise estimation of the environmental forces as well as the effectiveness of the thrust allocation logic. This paper is dedicated to developing an effective and efficient software program for the DPCap analysis for marine vessels. Estimation of the environmental forces can be obtained by model tests, hydrodynamic computation and empirical formulas. A quadratic programming method is adopted to allocate the total thrust on every thruster of the vessel. A detailed description of the thrust allocation logic of the software program is given. The effectiveness of the new program DPCap Polar Plot(DPCPP)was validated by a DPCap analysis for a supply vessel. The present study indicates that the developed program can be used in the DPCap analysis for marine vessels. Moreover, DPCap analysis considering the thruster failure mode might give guidance to the designers of vessels whose thrusters need to be safer.

Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture is drawing intensive attention since it promises to maintain high performance in handling complex communication issues as the number of on-chip components increases. An effective method of mapping multitask applications on multicores is necessary to effectively use the NoC potential. In this paper, we propose an approach of quadratic programming (QP) formulation at the first time for the mapping problem, and it can overcome the unacceptable complexity of Integer Linear programming (ILP) in dealing with problems with large size due to the decrease in the number of variables. Experimental results show that, QP method is at least 10 times faster than ILP method for 20 given benchmarks.

Parametric variational principle and quadratic programming method for van der Waals force simulation of parallel and cross nanotubes

A parametric variational principle for van der Waals force simulation between any two adjacent nonbonded atoms and the corresponding improved quadratic programming method for numerical simulation of mechanical behaviors of carbon nanotubes are developed. Carbon nanotubes are modeled and computed based on molecular structural mechanics model. van der Waals force is simulated by the network of bars (called bar network) with a special nonlinear mechanical constitutive law (called generalized parametric constitutive law) in the finite element analysis. Compared with conventional numerical methods, the proposed method does not depend on displacement and stress iteration, but on the base exchanges in the solution of a standard quadratic programming problem. Thus, the model and method developed present very good convergence behavior in computation and provide accurate predictions of the mechanical behaviors and displacement distributions in the nanotubes. Numerical results demonstrate the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper reviews briefly some advances and applications in parametric quadratic programming (PQP) method for numerical modeling of elastoplastic contact problems. The parametric variational principle (PVP) and the corresponding finite element model for numerical simulation of 3D elastoplastic frictional contact problems with isotropic/anisotropic (orthotropic) friction law are presented. The finite element software JIFEX is then developed with the application-oriented concept for nonlinear analysis of complex structures in general purposed engineering. Some typical engineering applications such as compressor impeller and the railway wheel/rail contact analysis are shown to illustrate the potential of the software developed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. In this work we, analyse the general form solution of the Inverse Redundant Kinematics (IRK) problem from a geometric point of View. We propose two new methods, Velocity Projection Constraints method (VPCM) and On-line Task Modification (OTMM), which formulate the obstacle and singularity avoidance as constraints, and will he incorporated in the standard quadratic programming (QP) method to resolve the IRK problem. This will avoid the compromise or conflict between weighted optimization criteria for the obstacle and singularity avoidance subgoals, as well the complicated weight adjustment process. The OTMM is effective not only to redundant manipulators but also to nonredundant manipulators. Numerical simulation examples validate and prove, the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Parametric variational principle based elastic-plastic analysis of Cosserat continuum

A new algorithm is developed based on the parametric variational principle for elastic-plastic analysis of Cosserat continuum. The governing equations of the classic elastic-plastic problem are regularized by adding rotational degrees of freedom to the conventional translational degrees of freedom in conventional continuum mechanics. The parametric potential energy principle of the Cosserat theory is developed, from which the finite element formulation of the Cosserat theory and the corresponding parametric quadratic programming model are constructed. Strain localization problems are computed and the mesh independent results are obtained.

Parametric variational principle based polygonal finite element method (PFEM) and Voronoi cell finite element method (VCFEM) are developed for the numerical simulations of the elastic-plastic mechanical behavior of heterogeneous materials under small deformation. The shape functions for the polygonal element are given and the parametric potential energy principle of the elastic-plastic system is verified. Based on the parametric complementary energy principle, the formulations of VCFEM and the corresponding parametric quadratic programming model are deduced for the elastic-plastic analysis of materials. Numerical examples are computed to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the methods developed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Voronoi cell finite element method （VCFEM） is adopted to overcome the limitations of the classic displacement based finite element method in the numerical simulation of heterogeneous materials. The parametric variational principle and quadratic programming method are developed for elastic-plastic Voronoi finite element analysis of two-dimensional problems. Finite element formulations are derived and a standard quadratic programming model is deduced from the elastic-plastic equations. Influence of microscopic heterogeneities on the overall mechanical response of heterogeneous materials is studied in detail. The overall properties of heterogeneous materials depend mostly on the size, shape and distribution of the material phases of the microstructure. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the method developed.

A Voronoi Cell finite element method (VCFEM) based on the parametric variational principle (PVP) is developed within the framework of small deformation to predict the effective elastic-plastic properties of heterogeneous materials. The parametric minimum complementary energy principle is adopted to derive the finite element formulation of the Voronoi cell element and a standard quadratic programming model is deduced from the elastic-plastic equations. Numerical examples are given to validate the potential of the method developed in analyzing the influence of microscopic inclusions on the overall mechanical responses of heterogeneous materials.
