Quality of experience enhancement of high efficiency video coding video streaming in wireless packet networks using multiple description coding

Recently, video streaming has attracted much attention and interest due to its capability to process and transmit large data. We propose a quality of experience (QoE) model relying on high efficiency video coding (HEVC) encoder adaptation scheme, in turn based on the multiple description coding (MDC) for video streaming. The main contributions of the paper are (1) a performance evaluation of the new and emerging video coding standard HEVC/H.265, which is based on the variation of quantization parameter (QP) values depending on different video contents to deduce their influence on the sequence to be transmitted, (2) QoE support multimedia applications in wireless networks are investigated, so we inspect the packet loss impact on the QoE of transmitted video sequences, (3) HEVC encoder parameter adaptation scheme based on MDC is modeled with the encoder parameter and objective QoE model. A comparative study revealed that the proposed MDC approach is effective for improving the transmission with a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) gain of about 2 to 3 dB. Results show that a good choice of QP value can compensate for transmission channel effects and improve received video quality, although HEVC/H.265 is also sensitive to packet loss. The increase in demand for video delivery over the last few years has led to a need for more compression efficiency. High efficiency video coding (HEVC) offers a better compression rate compared to the preceding standard codecs. However, the robustness of the coded stream is reduced in the low delay mode used for real-time applications. When a bitstream is transmitted over a hostile network, there is a high probability of burst network packet loss which can result in the loss of the entire frame. To deal with these signal degradations that occur in the transmission channel, an HEVC encoder adaptation scheme based on spatial multiple description coding (MDC) is proposed. A comparative study with the single description coding (SDC) scheme has shown its efficiency in improving the quality of the reconstructed video in the five packet loss cases studied and yields an average gain of about 14 to 35.57%.

This paper presents a novel rate control initialization algorithm for H.264. Firstly the first instantaneous decoding refresh frame in a video sequence is intra-coded to get the mean absolute difference (MAD) value, then the average MAD value of the second, third and fourth frames which are inter-coded is computed, finally the initial quantization parameter is determined depending on the bits per pixel and the two MAD values. When compared with the algorithm JVT-G012 [4] which is the current recommended algorithm implemented in the H.264 reference software JM13.0 and the algorithm [5], the proposed algorithm can increase the average peak signal-to-noise ratio of reconstructed video by tip to 1.241 dB and 1.262 dB, respectively(1).

In an adaptive bitrate streaming application, the efficiency of video compression and the encoded video quality depend on both the video codec and the quality metric used to perform encoding optimization. The development of such a quality metric need large scale subjective datasets. In this work we merge several datasets into one to support the creation of a metric tailored for video compression and scaling. We proposed a set of HEVC lightweight features to boost performance of the metrics. Our metrics can be computed from tightly coupled encoding process with 4% compute overhead or from the decoding process in real-time. The proposed method can achieve better correlation than VMAF and P.1204.3. It can extrapolate to different dynamic ranges, and is suitable for real-time video quality metrics delivery in the bitstream. The performance is verified by in-distribution and cross-dataset tests. This work paves the way for adaptive client-side heuristics, real-time segment optimization, dynamic bitrate capping, and quality-dependent post-processing neural network switching, etc.

In H.264/AVC rate control algorithm, the bit allocation process and the QP determination are not optimal. At frame layer, there is an implicit assumption considering that the video sequence is more or less stationary and consequently the neighbouring frames have similar characteristics. So, the target Bit-Rate for each frame is estimated using a straightforward process that allocates an equal bit budget for each frame regardless of its temporal and spatial complexities. This uniform allocation is surely not suited especially for all types of video sequences. The target bits determination at macroblock layer uses the MAD (Mean Absolute Difference) ratio as a complexity measure in order to promote interesting macroblocks, but this measure remains inefficient in handling macroblock characteristics. In a previous work we have proposed Rate-quantization (R-Q) models for Intra and Inter frames used to deal with the QP determination shortcoming. In this paper, we look to overcome the limitation of the bit allocation process at the frame and the macroblock layers. At the frame level, we enhance the bit allocation process by exploiting frame complexity measures. Thereby, the target bit determination for P-frames is adjusted by combining two temporal measures: The first one is a motion ratio determined from actual bits used to encode previous frames. The second measure exploits both the difference between two consecutive frames and the histogram of this difference. At macroblock level, the visual saliency is used in the bit allocation process. The basic idea is to promote salient macroblocks. Hence, a saliency map, based on a Bottom-Up approach, is generated and a macroblock classification is performed. This classification is then used to accurately adjust UBits(H264) which represents the usual bit budget estimated by H.264/AVC bit allocation process. Lagrangian Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) is widely employed in modern video encoders such as H.265/HEVC for mode decision. For each encoding stage, this approach involves minimizing a cost, which is a function of rate, distortion and a multiplier called lambda. This paper explores multi-lambda search and its impact on RDO by using more than one value of lambda. Simulations show an average bit rate saving up to 13.0% can be achieved for the H.265/HEVC codec. Moreover, the extra added complexity is contained to a certain level and is also adjustable according the processing resources available.

This paper describes a new transcoding algorithm, able to transcode any coded (***-2) bit-stream into an H.264 sequence with arbitrary spatial resolution change. The visual quality at a given input and output bit-rate is close or equal to full decoding followed by a full encoding (0.5 dB-to-2 dB less in PSNR than that of reencoding the stream at the target resolution) while, from the complexity point of view, the proposed transcoding approach is at least ten times faster than re-encoding. The experimental results show that this H.264 transcoder always gives about 20 to 60 % better compression than that of the size of the original MPEG2 sequence scaled by the target resolution ratio at equal subjective quality. Using constant quantization parameters both in the transcoding and re-encoding, transcoding gives 20 to 40 % lesser compression than re-encoding.

Bi-predictive (B) slices are not supported in the Baseline profile of the Advanced Video Coding (H.264/AVC) standard, which results in a decreased coding efficiency compared with other profiles supporting B slices. However, many application standards, such as the mobile multimedia services specified by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), use only the Baseline profile for H.264/AVC. Therefore, it is worth investigating H.264/AVC coding when only intra (1) and inter (P) slices are supported. In this paper, a content-adaptive quantization parameter (QP) cascading scheme for the hierarchical P coding method compatible with Baseline profile of H.264/AVC is proposed. The proposed method is based on a picture-level QP optimization. The proposed method has a significantly better rate-distortion performance than the traditional IPPP coding structure and outperforms hierarchical P coding methods using fixed delta QP settings between temporal levels noticeably with up to 0.53 dB gain in average luminance Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR).

Online videos and image blogging are some of the major sources for internet traffic and are estimated to have exponential growth in the future. Efforts are made to introduce advanced compression formats for images and included in the future codecs. This paper focuses on analyzing and comparing the existing codecs with the potential codecs to obtain very good quality images with substantially high compression rate. Using the same test conditions and same test content-set for both image and video codecs, like JPEG, JPEG LS, JPEG XR, JPEG 2000, JPEG XT, HEVC, VVC and EVC, the output quality of the image is analyzed using quality metrics like PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Metric). Fitting properties of each codec, conditions of testing and performance comparison between the codecs are analyzed. The test results indicate that JPEG XR is best suited for low resolution and HD image compressions while JPEG 2000 and JPEG XT are best suited for grey-scale and 4K image compressions respectively. The paper concludes with detailed analysis of codec performance including suggestion over its applications and scope for future work.
