Capacity evaluation for LTE applications considering queue overflow

In this study, the authors evaluate the capacity by summation of granted bit rates in their proposed quality of service-aware scheduling strategy for long term evolution (LTE). To provision differentiation, the scheduling technique prioritises the queues for high priority (HP) applications against their low priority (LP) counterparts. Fairness, on the other hand, is supported by considering queue overflow of LP applications. They utilised the principles of a random variable to derive equations for the capacities offered by their method and used the token bucket technique to address the principle of the guaranteed-bit-rate for HP applications, referring to the guaranteed capacity in LTE. Experimental findings confirm that their strategy could extend the capacity granted to LP applications and simultaneously maintain the capacity condition for HP applications. The results also show relative improvement and acceptable degradation in the capacities granted to the LP and HP applications in their scheme when compared with other methods.

Avoiding queue overflow and reducing queuing delay at eNodeB in LTE networks using congestion feedback mechanism

During congestion in LTE network, most of the algorithms succeed in either address the queue overflow problem or bufferbloat problem through implicit congestion control mechanism or using flow control technique. The flow control technique solves the bufferbloat problem but it affects the users while competing for shared resource in coexistence with conventional TCP or UDP users. The implementation of explicit congestion notification in LTE eNodeB is difficult because the network layers do not support it. Therefore, in this paper, congestion identification and feedback mechanisms are proposed to reduce the queuing delay and queue overflow problem by varying the congestion window size at sender based on the estimation of congestion level at eNodeB. The extensive experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithms reduce the delay of the packets and increase the fairness among the users compared to drop-tail, RED, STRED and PIE methods. Moreover, the Packet Delivery Fraction (PDF) has been increased and further throughput of the system is maintained. In addition to that, it competes with other users of conventional methods for the shared resources in a fair manner.

Most wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used for data collection applications. WSNs are known for their ease of deployment which make them very popular. In most data collection applications traffic is destined towards one node, usually known as the sink. With high data rate, this many-to-one traffic scenario causes queue overflow in the nodes located near the sink. Sensor nodes are known for their limited storage capacities which makes the packet queue overflow even more critical. This issue is often avoided by the routing protocol. Several efforts have recently led to the proposal of several traffic load balancing routing protocols to avoid queue overflow in WSNs. These protocols use various metrics in order to guide the routing mechanism such as the next hop neighbor queue occupancy rate or the next hop current number of children. In this paper, we propose a new routing protocol based on a Collaborative Load Balancing Algorithm (CoLBA). CoLBA uses the time spent by data packets in the queues as a routing metric. In addition to this metric, each node is aware of its queue occupancy rate. In case the receiving node queue is close to be full, all transmitting neighbors will be alerted and asked to choose another next hop. Simulation results on Contiki OS Cooja simulator showed that CoLBA achieves a better packet delivery rate and much less queue overflow compared to a standard routing protocol based on minimal hop counts.

Wireless sensor networks are an attractive solution thanks to their ease of deployment and auto-configuration capacities. Their limited resources make the design of communication protocols a challenging task. When used in high data rate application scenarios, bandwidth and storage capacities become the main preoccupation. In this paper, we present a Multichannel Collaborative Load Balancing Algorithm, M-CoLBA, that enhances the network bandwidth and avoid losing data packets due to queue overflow on limited storage capacity nodes. We emphasize on the importance of using a load balancing routing protocol with a multichannel MAC protocol to avoid congestion and data loss. We present results of M-CoLBA using Cooja simulator and we compare it to a single channel version and a multichannel basic routing protocol. Results show that M-CoLBA achieves high packet delivery rate thanks to its load balancing technique.

Buffer management control in data transport network node

The application of analytical queuing theory results in behaviour analysis of a distributed computer network or mobile data system (data transport network). It belongs to the preferred method in comparison to the simulation method. The use of analytical methods allows us to calculate effectively various values of parameters in equilibrium, including the total input intensity of data units to every node of transport network even for the more realistic models than the M/M/1 systems. However, these results are derived assuming an infinite buffer in size at a given node. For practical application, we need to project the concrete number of buffers in every node. This paper describes the method of buffer management control for each decomposed network's node of a data transport network in two real cases. For this purpose, the linear dependence between buffer memory size and input queue size at each node of a data transport network was used. For these two real statistical distributions of incoming data units closed expressions are derived, enabling to calculate the required queue size for both queue size limitation methods (assumption of the unlimited and limited queue sizes). For practical use, a very efficient way of computing queue overflow probabilities was developed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Fine-Grained Analysis of Packet Loss in MANETs

Most existing trust-based security schemes for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) consider packet loss an indicator of possible attacks by malicious nodes. There may be several reasons for packet losses, such as interference, queue overflow, and node mobility. Identifying the real underlying cause of a packet loss event is important for any security solution. To detect truly malicious nodes, it is necessary to carry out a fine-grained analysis (FGA) to determine the underlying cause of such loss. Without such analysis, the performance of any security solution may degrade, due to the punishment of innocent nodes while actual malicious nodes may remain undetected. Therefore, approaches are required that can correctly identify the reason for packet losses and can react accordingly. In this paper, we present a scheme that is able to correctly identify malicious nodes, using network parameters to determine whether packet losses are due to queue overflows or node mobility in MANETs. The contributions of this paper include the FGA scheme for packet loss and the development of a comprehensive trust model for malicious node identification and isolation. Our proposed FGA scheme is evaluated in terms of effectiveness and performance metrics under different network parameters and configurations. The experimental results show that our proposed trust model achieves a significant reduction in false positives rate and an increase in the rate of detection of truly malicious nodes compared with traditional non-FGA schemes.

Urban large-scale traffic congestion is often formed from the individual intersection's traffic jam. According to the characteristics of these intersections, this paper presents the conception of traffic bottleneck. To prevent bottleneck intersection's queuing back, this paper analysis bottleneck control strategy and its trigger conditions, and presents traffic bottleneck control strategy in single and coordination situation,then conceives single bottleneck control model and coordination bottleneck control model. At last, we prove the control effect of single bottleneck control model in practice.

They are used in different application domains including data collection with convergecast scenarios. In convergecast, all collected data are destined to one common node usually called the sink. In case of high traffic load, this many-to-one data collection scenario causes queue overflow mainly in nodes located near the sink. Sensor nodes are known for their limited storage capacities which makes the packet queue overflow even more critical. This issue is often avoided by the routing protocol. In this paper we propose a link quality and delay based Composite Load Balancing routing protocol (ComLoB) that fairly distributes traffic load to avoid congestion. It also integrates active queues monitoring to prevent dropping packets due to queues overflow. Simulation results on Contiki OS Cooja simulator showed that ComLoB achieves a better packet delivery ratio and much less queue overflow compared to standard routing protocols such as RPL and HopCount. We also validate our proposal through experimentation on TelosB motes.

The popularity of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is increasing due to their ease of deployment and auto-configuration capabilities. They are used in different applica- tion domains including data collection with convergecast scenarios. In convergecast, all data collected in the network is destined to one common node usually called the sink. In case of high carried traffic load and depending on the used routing policy, this many-to-one data collection leads to congestion and queue overflow mainly in nodes located near the sink. Congestion and queue overflow reduce delivery ratio that negatively affects the network efficiency. Wireless sensor nodes are resource constrained devices with limited buffers size to store and forward data to the sink. Introducing multichannel communication in WSNs helps to increase the carried traffic load thanks to allowing parallel data trans- mission and reduction of contention and interference. With high traffic load, the number of data packets travelling from leaf nodes towards the sink becomes higher. In case the routing scheme does not balance the traffic load, it will be unfairly dis- tributed between forwarding nodes. Thus, nodes that are in part of the routing will be overloaded while others are less used. Overloaded nodes increase the risk of conges- tion and queue overflow leading to data loss that reduces the throughput. Therefore, we need to couple the routing protocols with traffic load balancing scheme in high traffic load network scenarios. The goal of this thesis is to propose an efficient routing solution to prevent con- gestion and queue overflow in high data rate convergecast WSNs, in such a way, to optimize data delivery ratio at the sink node. On the one hand, we proposed a single channel traffic load balancing routing protocol, named S-CoLBA (Single channel Collaborative Load balancing routing).
