network coding is a technique used to improve both wired and wireless networks' throughput and provide reliable transmission. In network coding, original data packets can be encoded to an infinite number of coded packets. A subset of these coded packets is sufficient to decode the coded packets and retrieve the original data. In addition to providing reliable data transmission, network coding can be used as a lightweight security mechanism to protect data against eavesdroppers. An eavesdropper is not able to decode coded packets and retrieve original data unless it has access to a sufficient number of coded packets. In a data transmission application, transmitting more redundant packets increases the chance of delivering a sufficient number of coded packets to the destination. As a result, this increases the reliability of the data transmission. However, more redundant transmissions make the system more vulnerable to eavesdropper attacks because there is a higher chance that an eavesdropper will receive enough coded packets. In this work, we study network coding to provide reliable and secure data transmission schemes by performing a trade-off between the security and reliability of the data transmission. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer and linear programming problem, and we propose a linear programming approximation to solve it. We study the performance of our proposed methods through extensive simulations.

In wireless broadcast environments, a system performance can be improved with random linear network coding (RLNC). In RLNC, a source transmits a set of coding coefficients and a coded packet together. The coded packet is a combination of the coding coefficients and uncoded packets. Using the key feature of RLNC, we herein propose a new RLNC scheme to minimize outage probability with a feedback channel. In addition, the outage probability of the proposed scheme is analyzed in a Rayleigh fading channel. Through the numerical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that the outage probability of the proposed scheme is lower than that of a conventional RLNC scheme.

network coding (NC) has been exploited to minimize delay, energy per bit and to maximize throughput over lossy networks. However, applying network coding for scalable video transmission over packet-lossy networks is still an active research topic because of the challenge in trading off between rank deficiency problem and scalability of the video bitstream. Scalable video coding promises providing flexible broadcasting to heterogeneous user equipments, but the rank deficiency problem in NC limits the scalable capability in video streaming since the time of waiting for full rank causes long delay. In this paper, we exploit the combination of hierarchical and random linear network coding for solving the above issue. The hierarchical network coding provides unequal erasure protection for scalable layers and addresses the process of decoding layer by layer according to importance. Otherwise, random linear network coding provides error-correcting capability and makes the scheme resilient to packet loss. Our proposed network coding scheme benefits from these two schemes for multicast scalable video streaming. The simulation results and performance analysis are provided to evaluate the efficiency in terms of averaged decoding probability and peak signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed scheme achieves same performance of random linear network coding in good channel and approximately hierarchical network coding scheme in bad channel.

In order to improve the reconstructed quality of video sequence, a random linear network coding (RLNC) based video transmission scheme for Scalable Video coding (SVC) is proposed in wireless broadcast scenario. A packetization model for SVC streaming is introduced to transmit the scalable bit streams conveniently, on the basis of which the RLNC based Unequal Error Protection (RUEP) method is proposed to improve the efficiency of video transmission. The RUEP's advantage lies in the fact that the redundancy protection of UEP can be efficiently determine by the capacity of broadcast channel. Simulation results show that RUEP can improve the reconstructed quality of video sequence compared with the traditional Store and Forward (SF) based transmission schemes.

In smart grid, privacy implications to individuals and their families are an important issue because of the fine-grained usage data collection. Wireless communications are utilized by many utility companies to obtain information. network coding is exploited in smart grids, to enhance network performance in terms of throughput, delay, robustness, and energy consumption. However, random linear network coding introduces a new challenge for privacy preserving due to the encoding of data and updating of coefficients in forwarder nodes. We propose a distributed privacy preserving scheme for random linear network coding in smart grid that considers the converged flows character of the smart grid and exploits a homomorphic encryption function to decrease the complexities in the forwarder node. It offers a data confidentiality privacy preserving feature, which can efficiently thwart traffic analysis. The data of the packet is encrypted and the tag of the packet is encrypted by a homomorphic encryption function. The forwarder node random linearly codes the encrypted data and directly processes the cryptotext tags based on the homomorphism feature. Extensive security analysis and performance evaluations demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Multi-homing is a new mechanism that enables hosts with multiple network interfaces (IP addresses), to connect to more than one data link. This technology enhances Internet connectivity and reliability without compromising efficient performance. Like any communication system, the security of multi-homed systems is of great importance. However, this issue remains largely un-attempted, where only few papers in the literature discuss, address and present security solutions for multi-homed systems. On the other hand, random linear network coding (RLNC) has recently emerged as a new coding technique that aims at improving system performance by efficiently transmitting and compressing data in general multisource multicast networks. In this paper, a data confidentiality and availability scheme based on RNLC, is proposed for multi-homed systems. The proposed solution exploits the random physical characteristics of wireless channels, along with a pre-shared secret key, to derive dynamic keys which are used to generate random and dynamic cryptographic primitives. These primitives mainly include two permutation tables and a set of secret invertible RLNC matrices, all of which change for every input message. It has been shown that by securing the cryptographic primitives needed in the ciphering/deciphering process, one can jointly enhance the security and performance of transmitted data in multi-homed systems. Finally, security and performance analysis are presented to validate the efficiency and security of the proposed encryption/encoding scheme. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In wireless broadcasting retransmission, any node of multi-nodes requests the retransmission of information packets. This approach always needs large amounts of broadcasting packets. This paper presents a novel retransmission approach (RLNCBR) in wireless broadcasting networks based on random linear network coding. Firstly, source node will send linear coding packets based on the largest amounts of lost packets in received nodes. Then, received nodes will decode lost packets with network coding theory. Mathematic analysis reveals that our approach can ensure the solvability in the received nodes, and have optimal performance in wireless retransmission. Simulation results indicate that compared with existing approach, the approach in this paper can effectively reduce the average number of transmissions and advance the transmission efficiency.

network coding is a promising approach to increase network throughput and robustness to facilitate high volume traffic. Performing network coding in dynamic network structures requires transmitting coding coefficients for information sinks to decode network coded packets. Compared to the packet sizes used in practical networks, the size of coefficient vectors can be significant. This paper exploits the properties of small and medium sized networks and proposes a novel approach to minimise the coefficient vector size of network coded packets. Simulation results exhibit better compression of coefficient vectors over existing algorithms for small and medium sized networks.

In this paper, first we discuss some basic knowledge about the random network coding, then we introduce the random linear network coding with some simple models. Secondly, we will consider the coding over packets that randomly arrive to a source node for transmission to a single destination. Then, for broadcasting retransmission, any node of multi-nodes requests the retransmission of information packets. This approach always needs large amounts of broadcasting packets. And, at last, we present a queuing model for a random linear coding scheme that adapts to the amount of traffic at the source node.
