Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), well known as high resolution radar plays a vital role in military as well as civilian applications. Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology along with SAR systems leads to compact, costeffective and lightweight imaging sensors with fine resolution. The paper presents results obtained with X-band ground based SAR. We perform an experiment where synthetic aperture is formed by moving the antenna assembly along 8m rail placed at an elevated platform on rooftop of a building and 1m corner reflectors are placed on the ground. The range compressed data is convolved with its delayed time reversed template and compression in azimuth domain is performed. range and azimuth resolution measurements along with SAR image obtained are presented.

This paper studies the single step Motion compensation (MOCO) algorithm and its effectiveness in eliminating the defocusing effects on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The deviation of the airborne platform from the ideal trajectory results in the distortion of the SAR data thereby defocusing the SAR images and degrading resolution. MOCO algorithms are used to correct for these platform deviations resulting in the improved focusing of degraded SAR images. This paper proposes a single step MOCO algorithm wherein SAR raw data is processed using range-doppler algorithm (RDA) and phase compensation is applied prior to azimuth compression. The single step MOCO algorithm proposed simplifies the ease of implementation making it more suitable for real-time SAR implementations. Effectiveness of the algorithm was validated using simulated data.

Imaging efficiency has become a key problem for the application of synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) as the volume of raw data to be processed increases. In order to solve the imaging problem of low efficiency, a fast parallel range doppler imaging algorithm for synthetic aperture sonar based on multicore platform with shared memory is presented. The time-consuming processing steps such as range compression, fixed phase compensation, range cell migration compensation and azimuth compression are parallelized by OpenMP instructions in the shared memory environment, which greatly speeds up the imaging process. The imaging tests performed on simulated and real SAS data confirm the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

In this paper, a novel and complete derivation of the range doppler algorithm (RDA) formulation is developed for stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) usage. As the RDA has been originally developed for linear frequency modulated (LFM) pulse excited SAR data, the detailed mathematical derivation of SFCW based RDA formulation is presented with similarities, differences and additions to the traditional LFM-RDA formulation for comparison. Then, the developed SFCW-RDA was tested with simulation data and the performance of the algorithm is determined by examining some important parameters including impulse response width, peak to sidelobe ratio, integrated side lobe ratio, range resolution, and azimuth resolution. The performance metrics of the SFCW-RDA in comparison to LFM-RDA thru the constructed SAR images have proven the implementation validity of the proposed technique. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging for moving target can obtain complete situational awareness information of the detection area, and can realize the monitoring and control for moving target in the region of interest, which has important military and civilian dual-use value. However, due to the complex motion of target, the processing results of the existing SAR imaging methods severly defocused. In this paper, a high resolution SAR imaging method for moving target is proposed. First, we eliminate the coupling induced by linear range cell migration (RCM) by keystone transform. Then, the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is utilized to estimate the doppler frequency rate, which can solve the problem of doppler frequency rate mismatching when azimuth compression. Simulation results verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents the development of a ground-based arc-scanning synthetic aperture radar (ArcSAR) system mounted on a truck. ArcSAR formulates synthetic aperture by a horizontal circular motion of antennas attached at the end of an extendable boom. The ArcSAR system is designed to operate in two different imaging modes: the spot mode and the scan mode. The spot mode obtains a high-resolution image by fixing the view angle of antennas toward a target. The scan mode obtains wider image coverage with a reduced resolution by fixing the antennas relative to the boom. Different SAR focusing algorithms were implemented for the accuracy and efficiency of image processing: the time domain algorithm for the spot mode and the range doppler algorithm for the scan mode. An exemplary X-band ArcSAR spot mode image, obtained with a 180 degrees scanning of 4-m boom, has an azimuth resolution of 0.07 degrees, which is equivalent to the 12.6-m linear scanning of a conventional ground-based SAR system. An ArcSAR scan mode image was successfully obtained as well, covering a 350 degrees image area at an azimuth resolution of 1.07 degrees, which is 11 times better than that of arc-scanning real aperture radar that would have 11.84 degrees azimuth resolution.

Focusing of SAR data requires a space-variant two-dimensional correlation. Different algorithms are compared with each other in terms of their focusing quality and their ability to handle the space-variance of the correlation kernel: the range-doppler approach with and without secondary range compression, modified range-doppler algorithms, and four versions of the wavenumber domain processor. The phase aberrations of the different algorithms are given in analytic form. Numerical examples are presented for Seasat and ERS-1. A novel systems theoretical derivation of the wavenumber domain algorithm is presented.

High sidelobe analysis and reduction in multistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging fusion with gapped data

Radar observations from different angles are often discontinuous in multistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. Based on Fourier transform, such as Polar Format algorithm and range doppler algorithm, the discontinuity of the angle will make the performance of traditional ISAR imaging algorithm worse. The sidelobe of the image will rise and the mainlobe may split. Generally, it is necessary to pre-process the gapped data and then the traditional ISAR imaging algorithm is used for imaging. The most commonly used pre-processing method is to interpolate the gap. However, the performance of this method is not satisfied, especially when the gap is large. The reason of sidelobe rising and mainlobe splitting is first analysed. Then, a sidelobe reduction method based on compressive sensing (CS) is proposed. This method establishes a relationship between the complete data and the gapped data, and the complete data can be solved from the gapped data by CS method. After that, the complete data will be used for imaging by utilising traditional ISAR imaging algorithm and the high sidelobe will be reduced effectively. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the analysis and the simulation results.

To address the low-resolution imaging problem in relation to traditional range doppler(RD)algorithm,this paper intends to propose a new algorithm based on Fractional Fourier Transform(FrFT),which proves highly advantageous in the acquisition of high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)*** expression of the optimal order of SAR range signals using FrFT is deduced in detail,and the corresponding expression of the azimuth signal is also *** analysis shows that,the optimal order in range(azimuth)direction,which turns out to be very unique,depends on the known imaging parameters of SAR,therefore the engineering practicability of FrFT-RD algorithm can be greatly improved without the need of order *** FrFT-RD algorithm is established after an analysis of the optimal time-frequency *** results demonstrate that,compared with traditional RD algorithm,the main-lobe width of the peak-point target of FrFT-RD algorithm is narrow in both range and azimuth *** the peak amplitude of the first side-lobe is reduced significantly,those of other side-lobes also drop in various *** this way,the imaging resolution of range and azimuth can be increased considerably.

High Resolution SAR Image algorithm with Sample Length Constraints for the range Direction

The traditional range doppler(RD)algorithm is unable to meet practical needs owing to the limit of *** order of fractional Fourier Transform(FrFT)and the length of sampling signals affect SAR imaging performance when FrFT is applied to RD *** overcome the above shortcomings,the purpose of this paper is to propose a high-resolution SAR image algorithm by using the optimal order of FrFT and the sample length constraints for the range *** expression of the optimal order of SAR range signals via FrFT is deduced in *** initial sample length and its constraints are proposed to obtain the best sample length of SAR range *** results demonstrate that,when the range sampling-length changes in a certain interval,the best sampling-length will be obtained,which the best values of the range resolution,PSLR and ISLR,will be derived *** with traditional RD algorithm,the main-lobe width of the peak-point target of the proposed algorithm is narrow in the range *** the peak amplitude of the first side-lobe is reduced significantly,those of other side-lobes also drop in various degrees.
