Provisioning wireless broadband service in remote rural areas has been a global challenge, owing to several factors, which include the unavailability of reliable grid power, wired backhaul infrastructure, difficult terrain conditions, and a shortage of skilled manpower. Furthermore, cellular infrastructure established in areas impacted by extremist activities, is often at risk of various acts of vandalism, posing further challenges. In this paper, to deliver a sustainable, low-cost, always-on wireless broadband connectivity to a remote rural community, a vertical heterogeneous network (VHetNet) architecture is proposed by integrating three key technologies of 5G/B5G networks: (i) small cell base stations (SBSs), (ii) high altitude platform station (HAPS) and (iii) wireless backhauling with TV white space (TVWS). We study the proposed network architecture, considering a load-based bandwidth partition scheme. An analytical expression for the downlink rate coverage probability is obtained in alignment with 3GPP-specified 3D channel models suitable for Non-Terrestrial networks. Simulation results are used to validate our analytical results. Moreover, the capacity of the proposed solution, in terms of the number of small cell base stations and energy efficiency of the HAP transmission are also studied.

Wireless network virtualization is emerging as a promising technology for next-generation (5G) cellular networks. A key advantage of introducing virtualization in cellular networks is that wireless services can be decoupled from network resources (e.g., infrastructure and spectrum) so that multiple virtual networks can be built using a shared pool of network resources. This paper develops a theoretical framework for optimizing the resource allocation in virtualized cellular networks with heterogeneous coverage requirements. Specifically, we first formulate a chance-constrained virtual resource allocation problem that aims at probabilistically guaranteeing virtual networks' downlink coverage and rate demand satisfaction while minimizing resource over-provisioning in the presence of uncertainty in user equipment (UE) locations and channel conditions. Thereafter, we derive a closed-form expression for the downlink rate coverage probability of a typical virtual network. With the closed-form expression, we design an efficient algorithm to solve the chance-constrained problem with affordable computation complexity. Furthermore, considering the possibility of lack of sufficient network resources to satisfy all virtual networks' demands, we design a prioritized virtual resource allocation scheme where virtual networks are built sequentially based on their given priorities. Our results demonstrate that the proposed stochastic virtualization framework outperforms existing deterministic virtualization frameworks in terms of probabilistically guaranteeing virtual networks' coverage and rate demand satisfaction.

The uncertainty in user locations and channel conditions makes the deployment and performance analysis of wireless networks challenging. Stochastic geometry has emerged as a powerful tool for analyzing the performance of wireless networks, assuming certain stochastic models for the distribution of both users and base stations (BSs). In this letter, seeking further precision, we derive the downlink rate coverage probability of a wireless network with deterministically known BS locations. Then, we use this result to optimize the placement of BSs while keeping the downlink rate coverage probability above a certain threshold.

Wireless network virtualization is emerging as an important technology for next-generation (5G) wireless networks. A key advantage of introducing virtualization in cellular networks is that service providers can robustly share virtualized network resources (e.g., infrastructure and spectrum) to extend coverage, increase capacity, and reduce costs. However, virtualization of cellular networks is challenging task. One major challenge is to minimize over-provisioning of the virtualized resources while ensuring demand satisfaction of service providers in the presence of the uncertainty in user equipment (UE) locations and channel conditions. In this context, we propose a stochastic-optimization-based virtualization framework for cellular networks. Our proposed scheme aims at probabilistically guaranteeing UEs' Quality of Service (QoS) demand satisfaction, while minimizing the cost for service providers with reasonable computational complexity and affordable network overhead.

Wireless network virtualization is emerging as a promising technology for cellular networks. A key advantage of introducing virtualization in cellular networks is that wireless services can be decoupled from network resources (e.g., infrastructure and spectrum) so that multiple virtual networks can be built using a shared pool of network resources. This paper develops an optimization framework for orchestrating virtualized cellular networks while enabling and exploiting statistical multiplexing. Our proposed framework has two phases: virtual network deployment (static) and statistical multiplexing (adaptive). In the virtual network deployment phase, network resources are aggregated, sliced, and allocated to the virtual networks considering the presence of uncertainty in user equipment (UE) locations and channel conditions, without knowing which realization of UE locations and channel conditions will occur. Once the virtual networks are deployed, each of the aggregated base stations (BSs) performs statistical multiplexing, i.e., allocates excess resources from the over-satisfied slices to the under-satisfied slices, according to the realized channel conditions of associated UEs. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms existing virtualization frameworks in terms of probabilistically satisfying virtual networks' rate and coverage demands while minimizing resource over-provisioning, in the presence of uncertainty in UE locations and channel conditions.

This paper studies the effects of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) beam alignment errors on the downlink achievable rate of a heterogeneous network (HetNet), which consists of sub-6 GHz macro-cells and mm-wave small-cells. The alignment error is modeled as a function of the underlying mm-wave link parameters. The conventional maximum biased received power criterion, where the bias is used for mm-wave small-cells, is adopted for cell associations. By varying the value of the bias factor, we investigate the changes in the downlink rate coverage probability. Our simulation results indicate that high values (of the order of 30 dB) for the bias, while beneficial in the case of perfect alignment, are actually disadvantageous for the low-rate users in the case of imperfect beam alignment. The low-rate users are better served by a moderate value (of the order of 20 dB) of the bias when the beam alignment errors are accounted for. We also show that the above disparity can be narrowed down by increasing by mm-wave base station (BS) antennas and/or the mm-wave BS density.

Stochastic geometry is emerging as tractable solution and attractive approach to evaluate the performance of 5G heterogeneous network (5G-Hetnet) such as coverage, outage and rate probability. The base stations (BSs) and fading distribution in 5G-Hetnet are an almost ubiquitous assumption for analytical study, requiring flexible and scalable approaches. However, the beta-Ginibre point process (beta-GPP) has been proposed as a new method to model wireless network. This study provides a general framework to analyse downlink mmWave cellular network with Nakagami-m fading and directional beamforming. First, cell association scheme in both line-of-site and non-line-of-site is considered based on the strongest average received power. After deriving cell association probability between user equipment and BS, the computationally coverage probability expression is obtained depending on signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Furthermore, the impact of biasing factor on rate coverage probability is investigated. Finally, considering inter-cell-interference coordination, most performances metrics will be re-evaluated to determine their influence on the network. Recommended approaches produce satisfactory results when biasing factor and antenna beamforming are used.

Performance Analysis of One-Way Highway Vehicular Networks With Dynamic Multiplexing of eMBB and URLLC Traffics

The services of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and the ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) enabled by 5G new radio (NR) are considered as the essential prerequisites of the future intelligent transportation systems. Particularly, the eMBB service is designed to provide extremely high data rate for content delivery and thereby can significantly enhance the quality of experience (QoE) of the bandwidth-hungry in-vehicle entertainment applications. On the other hand, the URLLC is designed to tackle the stringent requirements on the latency and reliability of the critical packets transmissions, and thereby can facilitate the autonomous driving of the connected vehicles. In this paper, under the scenario of a one-way highway vehicular network, we address the issue of joint resource allocations of the eMBB and URLLC traffics for the enhancement of the network performance. The eMBB traffic is assumed to be full-buffered and scheduled at the boundary of each time slot for multimedia transmissions. During each eMBB transmission interval, random arrivals of URLLC traffics are assumed. To satisfy the latency constraint of the URLLC transmissions, the eMBB time slot is divided into minislots and the newly arrived URLLC traffic is promptly scheduled in the next minislot by puncturing the on-going eMBB traffics. Further, to guarantee the reliability of the URLLC traffic, guard zones are deployed around the vehicle receivers as protections and the eMBB transmissions inside the guard zones are prohibited. Under this context, we first derive the transmission probability of the RSU nodes. Then, based on the obtained results, we capture association probabilities of the vehicle receivers for URLLC and eMBB traffics, respectively. Finally, the coverage performance of the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links and the rate coverage performance of the vehicle-toinfrastructure (V2I) links are analyzed.

Spatial correlation based analysis of power control in user-centric 5G networks

User-centric network (UCN) organises a dynamic femto access point group (FAPG) for each user to meet the exponential data demands in 5G. However, there exists spatial correlation in the scheduling of femto access points (FAPs) due to the overlap of different users' FAPGs, which has not yet been analysed in existing literature. In this study, considering this spatial correlation by using Matern-like model, simple yet accurate semi-closed form expressions of rate coverage probability and area average goodput of power control strategy in UCN are derived, respectively, using stochastic geometry tools. In this user-centric power control strategy, each user equipment (UE) determines its FAPG radius considering the distance to the nearest FAP, and FAPs within the FAPG employ power control to mitigate dominant interference for the UE. Further, Matern-like model guarantees that two FAPs in the same FAPG will not transmit at full power simultaneously, and thus whether a FAP performs power control is correlated with other FAPs that belong to the same FAPG. The analytical results demonstrate significant performance gains of power control strategy in UCN compared with the non-coordination baseline, e.g. area average goodput is improved by about 44% when FAP-to-UE density ratio equals 1.

coverage and rate Analysis for Co-Existing RF/VLC Downlink Cellular Networks

This paper provides a stochastic geometry framework to perform the coverage and rate analysis of a typical user in co-existing visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) networks. The framework can be customized to capture the performance of a typical user in various network configurations such as 1) RF-only, in which only small base-stations (SBSs) are available to provide the coverage to a user;2) VLC-only, in which only optical BSs (OBSs) are available to provide the coverage to a user;3) opportunistic RF/VLC, where a user selects the network with maximum received signal power;and 4) hybrid RF/VLC, where a user can simultaneously utilize the available resources from both RF and VLC networks. The developed model for VLC network precisely captures the impact of the field-of-view (FOV) of the photo-detector receiver on the number of optical interferers, distribution of the aggregate interference, association probability, the coverage probability, and average rate of a typical user. A closed-form approximation is presented for special cases and for asymptotic scenarios, such as when the intensity of SBSs becomes very low or the intensity of OBSs becomes very high. The closed-form solutions for network design parameters (such as intensity of OBSs and SBSs, transmit power, and/or FOV) enable network operators to distribute the users among RF and VLC networks according to their choice. Moreover, we also optimize the network parameters in order to prioritize the association of users to VLC network. Finally, simulations are carried out to verify the derived solutions. It is shown that the performance of VLC network depends significantly on the receiver's FOV/intensity of SBSs/OBSs and careful selection of such parameters is crucial to harness the benefits of VLC networks. Important trade-offs between height and intensity of OBSs are highlighted to optimize the performance of VLC networks.
