MIMICKING QUANTUM MECHANICS USING reactive programming

We implement in a reactive programming framework a system mimicking three aspects of quantum mechanics: self-interference, state superposition, and entanglement. The system basically consists in a cellular automaton embedded in a synchronous environment which defines global discrete instants and broadcast events. The implementation shows how a simulation of fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics can be obtained from the synchronous parallel combination of a small number of elementary components.

The reactiveX API, also known as the reactive Extensions in the .NET world, is a popular functional reactive programming framework for asynchronous, event-based, multithreaded programming. Although Ada built-in tasking reduces the dire needs for additional multithreading support of some other languages, the reactive approach has properties that are well-suited to the safety and maintainability culture predominant in the Ada world, such as complexity reduction, well-defined concurrency semantics, and enhanced legibility by means of concise and explicit information flows appealing to imperative reasoning. This work presents the design of a reactiveX Ada implementation that aims to balance desirable library properties such as compile-time type-safety, amount of user-required generic instantiations, and a smooth learning curve for both library clients and maintainers. Concurrency design aspects of the library are detailed, showing how the F1 at _Map and Thread abstractions have been implemented following Ada programming expectations, in particular with regard to task termination. In the intervening time from its first presentation, the library has gained implemented operators to the point of having all fundamental building blocks available. With RxAda, the Ada programmer can henceforth benefit from the abundant documentation existing for the language-agnostic reactiveX approach without stepping out of the Ada tool chain.

On the Positive Effect of reactive programming on Software Comprehension: An Empirical Study

Starting from the first investigations with strictly functional languages, reactive programming has been proposed as the programming paradigm for reactive applications. Over the years, researchers have enriched reactive languages with more powerful abstractions, embedded these abstractions into mainstream languages-including object-oriented languages-and applied reactive programming to several domains, such as GUIs, animations, Web applications, robotics, and sensor networks. However, an important assumption behind this line of research is that, beside other claimed advantages, reactive programming makes a wide class of otherwise cumbersome applications more comprehensible. This claim has never been evaluated. In this paper, we present the first empirical study that evaluates the effect of reactive programming on comprehension. The study involves 127 subjects and compares reactive programming to the traditional object-oriented style with the Observer design pattern. Our findings show that program comprehension is significantly enhanced by the reactive-programming paradigm-a result that suggests to further develop research in this field.

A limited form of dependent types, called Generalized Algebraic Data Types (GADTs), has recently been added to the list of Haskell extensions supported by the Glasgow Haskell Compiler. Despite not being full-fledged dependent types, GADTs still offer considerably enlarged scope for enforcing important code and data invariants statically. Moreover, GADTs offer the tantalizing possibility of writing more efficient programs since capturing invariants statically through the type system sometimes obviates entire layers of dynamic tests and associated data markup. This paper is a case study on the applications of GADTs in the context of Yampa, a domain-specific language for Functional reactive programming in the form of a self-optimizing, arrow-based Haskell combinator library. The paper has two aims. Firstly, to explore what kind of optimizations GADTs make possible in this context. Much of that should also be relevant for other domain-specific embedded language implementations, in particular arrow-based ones. Secondly, as the actual performance impact of the GADT-based optimizations is not obvious, to quantify this impact, both on tailored micro benchmarks, to establish the effectiveness of individual optimizations, and on two fairly large, realistic applications, to gauge the overall impact. The performance gains for the micro benchmarks are substantial. This implies that the Yampa API could be simplified as a number of "pre-composed" primitives that were there mainly for performance reasons are no longer needed. As to the applications, a worthwhile performance gain was obtained in one case whereas the performance was more or less unchanged in the other.

The reactive paradigm recently became very popular in user-interface development: updates - such as the ones from the mouse, keyboard, or from the network - can trigger a chain of computations organised in a dependency graph, letting the underlying engine control the scheduling of these computations. In the context of the Internet of Things (IoT), typical applications deploy components in distributed nodes and link their interfaces, employing a publish-subscribe architecture. The paradigm for Distributed reactive programming marries these two concepts, treating each distributed component as a reactive computation. However, existing approaches either require expensive synchronisation mechanisms or they do not support pipelining, i.e., allowingmultiple "waves" of updates to be executed in parallel. We propose Quarp (Quality-Aware reactive programming), a scalable and light-weight mechanism aimed at the IoT to orchestrate components triggered by updates of data-producing components or of aggregating components. This mechanism appends meta-information tomessages between components capturing the context of the data, used to dynamically monitor and guarantee useful properties of the dynamic applications. These include the so-called glitch freedom, time synchronisation, and geographical proximity. We formalise Quarp using a simple operational semantics, provide concrete examples of useful instances of contexts, and situate our approach in the realm of distributed reactive programming.

reactive programming improves the design of reactive applications by relocating the logic for managing dependencies between dependent values away from the application logic to the language implementation. Many distributed applications are reactive. Yet, existing change propagation algorithms are not suitable in a distributed setting. We propose Distributed REScala, a reactive language with a change propagation algorithm that works without centralized knowledge about the topology of the dependency structure among reactive values and avoids unnecessary propagation of changes, while retaining safety guarantees (glitch freedom). Distributed REScala enables distributed reactive programming, bringing the benefits of reactive programming to distributed applications. We demonstrate the enabled design improvements by a case study. We also empirically evaluate the performance of our algorithm in comparison to other algorithms in a simulated distributed setting.

In this paper, we present the design and the results of the first empirical study that evaluates the effect of reactive programming on comprehensibility compared to the traditional object-oriented style with the Observer design pattern. Results confirm the conjecture that comprehensibility is enhanced by reactive programming. In the experiment, the reactive programming group significantly outperforms the other group.

Highly dynamic distributed applications often require flexible coordination among several autonomous components. Space-based middleware provides a suitable, data-driven coordination paradigm for such scenarios, where distributed peers exchange data and commands in a scalable and decoupled way using shared tuple spaces. In its basic form, such a middle ware supports access to a data storage and (blocking) queries on the stored tuples. However, in many cases the injection of additional server-side logic would ease the development of complex applications, as the semantics of the tuple space can be adapted to domain-specific requirements. This paper introduces reactive programming features for XVSM, a space-based middleware that enhances the tuple space concept with powerful coordination mechanisms. We present a comprehensive extension mechanism that supports the execution of application logic in reaction to composite and time-based events. As an example for the feasibility of the approach, we provide a bootstrapped solution for a leasing mechanism that manages the lifetime of data in the space.

Conventionally, callbacks and inversion of control have been the main tools to structure event-driven applications. Sadly, those patterns constitute a well-known source of design problems. The reactive programming (RP) paradigm has arisen as an approach to mitigate these problems. Yet, little evidence has been provided regarding the advantages of RP, and concerns have also arisen about the API usability of RP libraries given their disparate number of operators. In this work, we conduct a study on GitHub (GH) and Stack Overflow (SO) and explore three reactive Extensions (Rx) libraries (RxJava, RxJS, and RxSwift) with the most GH projects to understand how much the vast Rx operators are being used. Also, we examine Rx SO posts to complement the results from the GH exploration by understanding the problems faced by RP developers and how they relate with the operators' frequencies found in open source projects. Results reveal that, in spite of its API size, the great majority of the Rx operators are actually being used (95.2%), with only a few, mostly related to RxJava, not being utilized. Also, we unveil 23 topics from SO with more posts concerning the Stream Abstraction (36.4%). Posts related to Dependency Management, Introductory Questions, and iOS Development figure as relevant topics to the community. The findings herein present can not only stimulate advancements in the field by understanding the usage of RP API and the main problems faced by developers, but also help newcomers in identifying the most important operators and the areas that are the most likely to be relevant for a RP application.
