Robust design method and thermostatic experiment for multiple piezoelectric vibration absorber system

This paper examines the effects of connecting multiplexing shunt circuits composed of inductors and resistors to piezoelectric transducers so as to improve the robustness of a piezoelectric vibration absorber (PVA). PVAs are well known to be effective at suppressing the vibration of an adaptive structure;their weakness is low robustness to changes in the dynamic parameters of the system, including the main structure and the absorber. In the application to space structures, the temperature-dependency of capacitance of piezoelectric ceramics is the factor that causes performance reduction. To improve robustness to the temperature-dependency of the capacitance, this paper proposes a multiple-PVA system that is composed of distributed piezoelectric transducers and several shunt circuits. The optimization problems that determine both the frequencies and the damping ratios of the PVAs are multi-objective problems, which are solved using a real-coded genetic algorithm in this paper. A clamped aluminum beam with four groups of piezoelectric ceramics attached was considered in simulations and experiments. Numerical simulations revealed that the PVA systems designed using the proposed method had tolerance to changes in the capacitances. Furthermore, experiments using a thermostatic bath were conducted to reveal the effectiveness and robustness of the PVA systems. The maximum peaks of the transfer functions of the beam with the open circuit, the single-PVA system, the double-PVA system, and the quadruple-PVA system at 20 degrees C were 14.3 dB, -6.91 dB, -7.47 dB, and -8.51 dB, respectively. The experimental results also showed that the multiple-PVA system is more robust than a single PVA in a variable temperature environment from -10 degrees C to 50 degrees C. In conclusion, the use of multiple PVAs results in an effective, robust vibration control method for adaptive structures.

Multi-period portfolio optimization using coherent fuzzy numbers in a credibilistic environment

In this paper, we use an extension of fuzzy numbers, called coherent fuzzy numbers, to model asset returns and an investor's perception of the stock market (pessimistic, optimistic, or neutral) simultaneously. Two multi-period multi-objective portfolio optimization models are formulated using mean absolute semi-deviation and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) as risk measures, respectively. We aim to provide more flexibility to the investor in specifying the risk tolerance and devise optimum investment plans for different investment horizons. The proposed models also incorporate bound, cardinality, and skewness constraints for each investment period to capture various stock market scenarios. A real-coded genetic algorithm is employed to solve the resultant models. Two real-life case studies involving 20 assets of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India, and another involving 50 assets listed in the S&P 500 and NASDAQ-100 indexes have been provided to illustrate the efficacy and advantages of the models. An in-sample and out-of-sample analysis have been done for both the models to analyze the performance in the real-world scenario. The conclusion drawn from the analysis strongly emphasizes on accurately assessing the current stock market prospects, i.e., adopting the right attitude (pessimistic, optimistic, or neutral), is of paramount importance and must be included in the portfolio optimization problem.

Construction optimization of spatial arch bridges based on inverse hanging and RGA method

Form -finding and construction process are complex for spatial arch bridge. To facilitate the design and construction of spatial arch bridge, an algorithm with combination of inverse hanging and real -coded genetic algorithm (RGA) method is proposed. The experimental device suitable for inverse hanging experiment of spatial arch bridge is firstly proposed. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results to validate the accuracy of proposed form -finding algorithm. The validated results indicated that the error which is mainly caused by measure error is below 5 %. Then, the form -finding algorithm and RGA is combined to perform construction optimization for planar and spatial arch bridge. With the proposed optimization algorithm, the form -finding of spatial arch bridge is completed and the optimization of installation order of hangers can be performed based on the form -finding results. The tensioning force corresponding to different installation sequences is significantly different (546 kN and 177 kN). By using RGA, the max stress of arch is significantly decreased and generally below 100 MPa. The RGA is efficient in optimize the installation sequence. The control value of tension force of all hangers can be computed by using the RGA and reverse construction simulation. The nonlinear effect and the influence of geometrical size on tensioning force can be automatically considered. The results of this study indicate that the proposed algorithm is an efficient and accurate method for the construction optimization of spatial arch bridges.

genetic Network Programming (GNP) having a directed graph structure has been proposed as a new method of evolutionary computation. Recently, GNP has been applied to elevator group supervisory control system (EGSCS), a real-world problem, to demonstrate its applicability and effectiveness. Its previous study considers the known and fixed traffic flow, however, it is changed dynamically with time in real elevator systems. Therefore, an EGSCS with dynamic adaptive control considering such changes should be studied for practical applications. In this paper, we have applied GNP with functional localization to an EGSCS to construct such an adaptive system. In our proposal, the switching GNP can switch the functionally localized GNPs (assigning GNPs) based on the special traffic. Simulation confirmed the adaptability and effectiveness of our proposal in daily office-building traffic.

In this study, the aim is to construct a "teacher-student model" for optimal skill acquisition. To support the optimal skill acquisition, modeling and estimation of an individual learning process are very important. The first-order system with time delay is introduced as an individual learning process model based the control engineering approach. These system parameters included in the skill evaluation model are estimated by using a real-coded genetic algorithm. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, it is employed for the parts classification task.

Water quality models are helpful for rationalizing water quality management. Their success depends largely on how well they are calibrated. The automatic calibration of models usually outperforms traditional trial-and-error process. In this study, a realcoded genetic algorithm (GA) was combined with the Nelder-Mead simplex (NMS) algorithm to form a hybrid approach, GA-NMS. It was employed to calibrate simulated vertical profiles of temperature and concentration of chlorophyll a by CE-QUAL-W2 to measured values in Lake Maumelle, USA. A set of parameter values that had the lowest objective function value was obtained in hundreds of objective function evaluations. It produces reasonable agreement between measurements and simulations. This application demonstrated that the approach can be used in the automatic calibration of water quality models.

Biological systems are composed of biomolecules such as genes, proteins, metabolites, and signaling components, which interact in complex networks. To understand complex biological systems, it is important to be capable of inferring regulatory networks from experimental time series data. In previous studies, we developed efficient numerical optimization methods for inferring these networks, but we have yet to test the performance of our methods when considering the error (noise) that is inherent in experimental data. In this study, we investigated the noise tolerance of our proposed inferring engine. We prepared the noise data using the Langevin equation, and compared the performance of our method with that of alternative optimization methods.

An improved Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) approach was proposed to overcome the drawback of "losing sparsity" in original LS-SVM. At the same time, real-coded genetic algorithm (RC-GA) was introduced to solve the difficult problem of parameters selection in LS-SVM. By discarding most data points with too large or too small training errors in the trained LS-SVM model, a more sparse and anti-noise LS-SVM model was obtained. The parameters selection of LS-SVM was regard as an optimization problem. The objective function of the optimization problem was established. And a RC-GA with high global searching capability was used to search the optimal parameters of LS-SVM. Both simulation and experiment results demonstrate the success of the improved LS-SVM and the effectiveness of RC-GA parameters optimization method.

Dental caries is the most common infectious disease in humans, which affects 97% of the population in their lifetimes. In this article, fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) are applied to classify patients in terms of their personal risk of dental caries. Two approaches are discussed for developing FCMs. At first, causal relations between concepts and their weights are defined based on the domain experts. Then, these causal weights are determined by means of the real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA) and historical data, without the intervention of experts. These two FCMs have been compared by categorizing 86 sample patients into two classes: 'carious' and 'healthy'. Although the conventional FCM has successfully categorized 67.44% of the cases in correct classes, the KCGA based FCM hits the 83.72% correct classification rate. Results show the efficiency of RCGA based FCM in comparison with the conventional FCM.

Many real-world design problems involve simultaneous optimization of multiple objectives. The considered grillage design is a multi-objective optimization problem, since there are two objective functions, namely, the volume design and the cost design. Thus, the solution of this optimization problem requires specialized method suitable for multi-objective problems. In this article, a multi-objective design optimization using real-coded genetic algorithm which is proposed for the Pareto-optimality of grillage system. The objective functions in the optimization problem measure the design sensitivities in grillage system. The nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization is a very important from the point of view of practical problem solving. Therefore, the real-coded genetic algorithm with multiple genetic operators is proposed to find the optimum grillage system without handling any of penalty functions. Direct strength calculation defined from the class rules of DNV was applied for structural design of grillage system. The hybrid method (real-coded genetic algorithm including the non-dominated sorting and sharing approaches) performs a marvelous explorability in finding a diverse set of solutions and in converging near the true Pareto-optimal set. The results obtained are very encouraging, since they show that we can produce an important portion of the Pareto-front at a very low computational time frame.
