The paper addresses the problem of pencil beam synthesis for large array antenna, such as the Ku/Ka-satellite receiving antenna. For such a problem, the conventional phase-shift-only algorithm would achieve a fixed sidelobe level (SLL), for instance, the first SLL is -13.46 dB for uniform array antenna. Many algorithms based on convex technique are designed to further suppress the SLL to an expected level. However, all of those algorithms are time-consuming, especially for large array antenna system. To overcome the time-consuming disadvantage, a deterministic algorithm based on density tapering technique is proposed. The desired beam-pattern is assumed to follow a Gaussian function with its standard deviation controlling the beam. The proposed algorithm tries to generate a beam pattern as similar to the desired one as possible by optimizing the elements excitation. The solution to the optimal elements excitation has an explicit form with respect to the antenna parameters, thus can be solved in real-time. Simulations are carried out by comparing with the existed algorithms to assess the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and some conclusions are remarked.

Temporal exposure bracketing is a simple and low cost technique to generate a high dynamic range (HDR) images. This technique is widely used to recover the whole dynamic range of a scene by selecting the adequate number of low dynamic range (LDR) images to be fused. Temporal exposure bracketing technique is introduced to be used for static scenes and it cannot be applied directly for dynamic scenes since camera or object motion in bracketed exposures creates ghosts in the resulting HDR image. In this paper we propose a HDR algorithm modification to remove ghost artifact and we present a real-time implementation of this method on a smart camera (HDR video stream 1280 x 1024 at 60fps). We present experimental results to show the ghost removing efficiency of our implemented method.

This paper deals with the usage of National Instruments LabVIEW and its dedicated control platforms in the field of Power Electronics and Drives (PED) control applications. Specific requests of the PED field are covered with respect to the real-time target, formally microprocessor, and the on-board FPGA. Paper is focused mainly on algorithm implementation and testing, as well as performance and resource utilization are discussed. Benefits of graphical programming are highlighted and compared with conventional text-based code editing methods, such as VHDL and Verilog.

One of the problems, arising in using of time-Domain THz spectroscopy for the security, consists in developing of probability assessment criterion for the detection and identification of the explosive and drugs. Usually the detection and identification occur using the reflected THz signal. Therefore, the key problem is the detection of absorption features, belonging to the explosive and drugs, in the THz signal reflected from a substance under investigation. After the solution of this problem, the next step is a development of the criterion for the quantitative assessment of explosive presence in analyzing substance. In this paper, we discuss properties (advantages and disadvantages) of proposed criteria and their possibilities for the assessment of presence of required substance. We discuss also briefly the algorithm of various criteria using for the detection of substance in real-time on the base of spectral dynamics analysis of reflected THz pulse.

At present, various approaches are used to synthesize the virtual environment, among which the most common are computer graphics and photogrammetric modeling. In addition, neural network information processing systems are being developed to create fully artificial interactive worlds based on real-world video recordings. This paper addresses the procedural generation of virtual space. It is a continuation of a series of articles devoted to the research of authors in this field. The generated content is represented as a cloud of points of different density. The construction of a cloud of points of three-dimensional space takes place on the basis of video data obtained as a result of shooting with a single camera moving along an arbitrary trajectory. Particularly addressed the problem of incomplete data and issues of preserving meaningful information. The result of the study is a conceptual description of methods for modeling a virtual environment. As methods of modeling a virtual environment, it is proposed to use the mathematical apparatus of parametric and non-parametric restoration of the density of the distribution of point objects in space according to the available sample. The results of testing the considered methods implemented in the MATLAB environment are presented.

The introduction of smartwatches over the last few years has made widely available a new type of wearable, everyday-usage device that is equipped with dozens of sensors. The sensors embedded in the smartwatch constitute a valuable source of data about the bodily functions of the smartwatch user;a source that has already been exploited for inferring information concerning the human behavior. One possible application of the aforementioned information inference is the prediction of eating-related events, such as bite instances. Accurate bite instance prediction from smartwatch sensors could serve as a trigger for appropriate user feedback in the context of just-in-time adaptive interventions for eating behavior management. In this paper, we present a novel method for real-time detection of bite instances from 3-axis orientation data acquired by a smartwatch. The evaluation of the proposed method has been performed on eight annotated orientation timeseries, generated by eight individuals who wore a commercial smartwatch on their active hand while eating a bowl of milk with cereals. Both the classification accuracy of the method and its ability to make realtime decisions were evaluated, yielding very promising results.

CRAR: Accelerating Stereo Matching with Cascaded Residual Regression and Adaptive Refinement

Dense stereo matching estimates the depth for each pixel of the referenced images. Recently, deep learning algorithms have dramatically promoted the development of stereo matching. The state-of-the-art result is achieved by models adopting deep convolutional neural networks. However, a considerable computational burden is also introduced, which slows the inference. To solve this problem, previous works down-sampled the input images to decrease the spatial size. However, down-sampling increases the error rate and its lower bound. In this article, we accelerate stereo matching algorithms through the improvement of network structure. Inspired by network compression, we conduct decomposition and sparsification to squeeze the computationally expensive cost optimization network. It is sparsified and then decomposed into smaller networks, which are designed and trained in a cascaded manner to reach the nearest possible performance of the larger network. Previous methods have utilized numerous refinement methods to adjust the coarse disparity. We integrate refinement methods to create an unified algorithm to utilize parallelism for running devices to further accelerate the inference. The extensive experiments on Kitti2015, Kitti2012, and Middlebury datasets demonstrate the efficiency of our method.

Enhancing Railway Earthquake Early Warning Systems with a Low Computational Cost STA/LTA-Based S-Wave Detection Method

To enhance real-time S-wave detection in the railway earthquake early warning (EEW) system, we improved the existing short-term average/long-term average (STA/LTA) algorithm. This enhancement focused on developing a more robust and computationally efficient method. Specifically, we introduced noise reflecting P-wave amplitude information before the P-wave to better distinguish between P- and S-waves. By applying this modified STA/LTA method, we achieved a significant improvement in S-wave detection accuracy. For seismic waveforms from stations located within 100 km of the epicenter of each earthquake, with magnitude of M5.5-6.5 and depths <= 100 km, the detection accuracy within 1.5 s of the correct time (manual picking) was 81.0%, compared to the 49.0% accuracy of the currently operational railway EEW system. Importantly, despite the improved accuracy, the computational cost of the new method remains comparable to the existing system, allowing for easy integration into the operational EEW system. This development is crucial for preventing false alarms, especially moderate earthquakes (similar to M6) because issuing warn-ings in unnecessary areas can have a significant social impact. Future plans involve implementing this method into the current system to further improve early warning capabilities and minimize false alarms.

Implementation of Thermal Event Image Processing algorithms on NVIDIA Tegra Jetson TX2 Embedded System-on-a-Chip

Advances in Infrared (IR) cameras, as well as hardware computational capabilities, contributed towards qualifying vision systems as reliable plasma diagnostics for nuclear fusion experiments. Robust autonomous machine protection and plasma control during operation require real-time processing that might be facilitated by Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). One of the current aims of image plasma diagnostics involves thermal events detection and analysis with thermal imaging. The paper investigates the suitability of the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 Tegra-based embedded platform for real-time thermal events detection. Development of real-time processing algorithms on an embedded System-on-a-Chip (SoC) requires additional effort due to the constrained resources, yet low-power consumption enables embedded GPUs to be applied in MicroTCA.4 computing architecture that is prevalent in nuclear fusion projects. For this purpose, the authors have proposed, developed and optimised GPU-accelerated algorithms with the use of available software tools for NVIDIA Tegra systems. Furthermore, the implemented algorithms are evaluated and benchmarked on Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator experimental data against the corresponding alternative Central Processing Unit (CPU) implementations. Considerable improvement is observed for the accelerated algorithms that enable real-time detection on the embedded SoC platform, yet some encountered limitations when developing parallel image processing routines are described and signified.

An on-board vision based system for drowsiness detection in automotive drivers

This paper proposes a system for on-board monitoring the loss of attention of an automotive driver, based on PERcentage of eye CLOSure (PERCLOS). This system has been developed considering the practical on-board constraints such as illumination variation, poor illumination conditions, free movement of driver's face, limitations in algorithms etc. A novel framework for PERCLOS computation is reported in this paper. The system consists of an embedded processing unit, a camera, a near infra-red lighting system, power supply, a set of speakers and a voltage regulation unit. The image based algorithm is based on the PERCLOS as an indicator of the loss of attention of the driver. The authenticity of PERCLOS as an indicator of drowsiness has been validated using EEG signals.
