While established linear pulse-echo ultrasound imaging concepts like synthetic aperture (SA) focusing and delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming solely image tissue features under single scattering, nonlinear reconstruction methods have been proposed to compute quantitative maps of the tissue's material parameters (e.g. compressibility, mass density, speed of sound) under multiple scattering. In the present contribution, we apply a previously proposed nonlinear simultaneous compressibility and mass density reconstruction algorithm and investigate numerically the image reconstruction quality in contrast to linear SA under cylindrical wave (cw) excitation and linear DAS under plane wave (pw) excitation. Using raw data acquired from a Shepp-Logan phantom (SLP) with typical soft tissue compressibility and mass density values, nonlinear reconstruction using cylindrical wave excitation provides high-resolution images with a mean magnitude of relative error of about 4.27% and 3.18% within a region of interest (ROI) in the compressibility and mass density image, outperforming the image quality reached under plane wave excitation. Applying identical raw data, SA and DAS with both predefined and adapted apodization weights yield less-detailed image reconstructions solely showing tissue boundaries. Furthermore, calculating full width at half maximum (FWHM) resolutions of all methods, the nonlinear approach mainly yields smaller axial and lateral resolutions in contrast to SA and DAS.

The idea of compressed sensing (CS) can be applied to atomic force microscopy (AFM) to reduce the amount of data that needs to be sampled for accurate image reconstruction. The data sampling strategy and measurement matrix design in AFM have been discussed in previous work. However, standard CS image recovery needs to solve a large size convex optimization problem, which requires a lot of computational resources in terms of both time and memory. In this paper, we propose a new variant of the Matching Pursuit (MP) algorithm for image reconstruction based on CS in AFM. With this algorithm, the computational time and memory space for image reconstruction can be reduced significantly with only a small loss in image quality. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated through MATLAB simulation.

It often happens that we are interested in reconstructing an unknown signal from partial measurements. Also, it is typically assumed that the location (temporal or spatial) of each sample is known and that the only distortion present in the observations is due to additive measurement noise. However, there are some applications where such location information is lost. In this paper, we consider the situation in which the order of noisy samples, taken from a linear measurement system, is missing. Previous work on this topic has only considered the noiseless case and exhaustive search combinatorial algorithms. We propose a much more efficient algorithm based on a geometrical viewpoint of the problem. We also study the uniqueness of the solution under different choices of the sampling matrix and its robustness to noise for the case of two-dimensional signals. Finally we provide simulation results to confirm the theoretical findings of the paper.

For sparse ultra-wideband signals in frequency domain, the non-uniform adoption system is used to sample the signals at different rates. OMP algorithm, LASSO algorithm and BCS algorithm are used to recover the non-uniformly sampled signal. According to the analysis and comparison of the simulation results, the following conclusions are drawn: BSC algorithm has little change in time-consuming and robustness with the increase of the number of observations, and has better reconstruction performance when the number of observations is low and the noise is included.

The long object imaging problem in volumetric CT using iterative reconstruction algorithm is a challenge due to the intrinsic longitudinal (z-axis) truncation in the circular scanning trajectory. We revisited the problem in this work and proposed a simplified version of our original approach. We simply removed the projection data expansion and empirical weighting scheme in our original method while reconstructed only the image in an extended region. It seems that error will be introduced in the reconstructed image volume from those rays traveling both through the region of interest (ROI) and outside ROI. Hence error will propagate further into the image volume resulting the useful ROI diminishes for each iteration. However, our results showed that the image quality was well preserved by use of iterative reconstruction method. Artifacts due to the longitudinal truncation did not propagate as originally expected. We demonstrated our results of two sets of clinical data, head and abdomen, respectively, acquired from Aquilion ONE™ CT scanner (Toshiba American Medical Systems, Tustin, CA, USA) reconstructed by use of iterative reconstruction algorithm.

A linear image reconstruction algorithm for solving the Magnetic Induction Tomography inverse problem is presented. It’s an optimization process to determine a reconstruction matrix that does the best mapping between a set of training parameter vectors and their respective measurements dictated by a forward model. It allows the simultaneous 3D reconstructions of the electric conductivity, electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The results were compared with the ones obtained from a single-step regularized Gauss-Newton method and a reduction of 15% in the image error was verified. The behavior of the developed algorithm in a simulated clinical environment was also assessed using a realistic bioimpedance model of the human head, derived from a high resolution magnetic resonance image.

Traditional data acquisition systems rely on sampling of bandlimited signals at uniformly spaced time instants with high-precision amplitude representation. Amplitude sampling, as previously introduced by the authors, is based on uniform amplitude sampling with high precision timing information. This paper presents an iterative algorithm for signal recovery from amplitude samples and compares the results with the use of iterative recovery from the nonuniform time samples implied by the amplitude sampling process. The iterative amplitude sampling reconstruction algorithm (IASR) proposed and evaluated in this paper is based on the interpretation of amplitude sampling as uniform sampling of an associated function obtained from a reversible transformation of the bandlimited input signal. The IASR algorithm exploits uniform sampling and the frequency- and time-domain properties of the amplitude-time function. The IASR algorithm is compared with the use of iterative nonuniform sampling reconstruction as proposed by Voroni. While in numerical simulations the Voronoi algorithm converges to marginally better reconstruction than IASR, the convergence rate of IASR is significantly better.

In the Electrical Capacitance Tomography, the distribution of permittivity in the pipe can be estimated using the capacitance measurements with help of the reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, the permittivity distribution was reconstructed with Kalman Filter and several simulations were carried out to evaluate the effect of different initial values of the grey values in the image and the estimate error covariance on reconstructed image. In addition, Landweber and Tikhonov were used to reconstruct the object to compare with the reconstructed effect of Kalman Filter with suitable initial values.
