Multi-Valued Eigen-Processing for Isolating Multiple Sources With a rectangular array

The multi-valued Bartlett (MVB) processor is useful for determining the locations of multiple acoustic sources in the ocean [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 235-241 (1995)]. This approach was originally applied to a vertical line array of hydrophones. The application to a rectangular array is explored here. The MVB processor is an eigen-processor that is based on the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix. It is multi-valued in the sense that an ambiguity surface is constructed for each member of a subset of the eigenvectors that correspond to the largest eigenvalues. The motivation for the approach is the fact that energy from different sources tends to partition into different eigenvectors. One of the advantages of the MVB processor on a rectangular array is that it is possible to determine if the partitioning is favorable without computing replica fields, which is often the most time-consuming task of matched-field processing computations. Examples are presented to illustrate the capabilities and limitations of the approach.

Efficiency of projected score methods in rectangular array asymptotics

The paper considers a rectangular array asymptotic embedding for multistratum data sets, in which both the number of strata and the number of within-stratum replications increase, and at the same rate. It is shown that under this embedding the maximum likelihood estimator is consistent but not efficient owing to a non-zero mean in its asymptotic normal distribution. By using a projection operator on the score function, an adjusted maximum likelihood estimator can be obtained that is asymptotically unbiased and has a variance that attains the Cramer-Rao lower bound. The adjusted maximum likelihood estimator can be viewed as an approximation to the conditional maximum likelihood estimator.

When receiving waves at constant or small elevation angle, rectangular array of sensors are considered as very efficient beamforming networks in wireless communications. This rectangular array structure has an important advantage over linear structure as to the resolution of angle of arrival estimation. This high resolution characteristic is essentially the same in all directions and the beamwidth is adjustable in a very simple manner. In addition, the number of antenna elements which are used for beamforming can be selected according to the angle of arrival, which reduces the complexity of the system by reducing the number of weight calculations. In this paper we present a local approximation method to localize and to track moving sources using rectangular array.

In order to efficiently estimate the angle of arrival (AOA) information from the closely located signal sources, in this paper, we introduce a cascade AOA estimation technique based on the CAPON and beamspace Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithms. First, the cascade approach estimates AOA groups consisting of multiple AOAs using CAPON, and then estimates the individual AOA in the AOA group using beamspace MUSIC. In this paper, we employ the rectangular array anttena for the cascade algorithm.

We investigate the topic of two-dimensional direction of arrival (2D-DOA) estimation for rectangular array. This paper links angle estimation problem to compressive sensing trilinear model and derives a compressive sensing trilinear model-based angle estimation algorithm which can obtain the paired 2D-DOA estimation. The proposed algorithm not only requires no spectral peak searching but also has better angle estimation performance than estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm has close angle estimation performance to trilinear decomposition. The proposed algorithm can be regarded as a combination of trilinear model and compressive sensing theory, and it brings much lower computational complexity and much smaller demand for storage capacity. Numerical simulations present the effectiveness of our approach.

This paper aims at investigating the feasibility of ranging and positioning in millimeter (mm)-level accuracy by adopting millimeter-wave and 3D massive antenna array. The agent is equipped with massive phased uniform rectangular array (URA) and multiple anchors are considered in localization networks to pursue a higher accuracy, where a far-field environment is assumed for phased massive URA. Fundamental limits of both time-based ranging and positioning are derived by Cramer-Rao bound (CRB), where the relationship between the fundamental bound of range estimation and that of position estimation is theoretically clarified. Numerical results show that the proposed scenario achieves a precise mm-level accuracy for ranging and positioning.

The response of a wideband beamformer based on a rectangular array with spatial-only information is studied. In this beamformer, each of the received array signals is only processed by one single coefficient and its output is an instantaneous weighted combination of the received signals. One interesting property of it is that it has a totally different beam response depending on whether we are considering the negative frequency component or the positive frequency component of the impinging signals. As a result, the implementation of this beamformer is not as straightforward as the traditional ones and a special arrangement is required for its effective operation. Two implementation schemes are proposed for complex-valued impinging signals and real-valued impinging signals, respectively, supported by design and simulation results.

This paper describes the performance of robust rectangular antenna array beamformer using new variable loading technique against steering vector error. Steering vector error is an important factor for practical implementation of the beamformer and the outcome of the paper shows that the robust beamformer performs well at erroneous and error free condition. rectangular array is essential for the modern space limited situation where the array can scan around 360 degrees and required less space for array elements positioning. The result of the technique is compared with other published loading technique applied to rectangular array.
