A recursive algorithm for computing the inverse of the Vandermonde matrix

The inverse of a Vandermonde matrix has been used for signal processing, polynomial interpolation, curve fitting, wireless communication, and system identification. In this paper, we propose a novel fast recursive algorithm to compute the inverse of a Vandermonde matrix. The algorithm computes the inverse of a higher order Vandermonde matrix using the available lower order inverse matrix with a computational cost of O(n(2)). The proposed algorithm is given in a matrix form, which makes it appropriate for hardware implementation. The running time of the proposed algorithm to find the inverse of a Vandermonde matrix using a lower order Vandermonde matrix is compared with the running time of the matrix inversion function implemented in MATLAB.

Due to the existence of measurement error and approximate theory of network model parameters, the result of power system state estimation is uncertain. Interval analysis based on iterative solution method can estimate the upper and lower bounds of system state variables, but the accuracy of estimation will be affected by interval expansion. In this paper, using a recursive solution method, an interval state estimation method for power system based on holomorphic embedding method is proposed. By introducing the holomorphic embedding method, the interval measurement equation is embedded and reconstructed, and the coefficient recursion formula after power series expansion is obtained, which is solved in recursive form, and the interval solution of state quantity is obtained. Cases show that, compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method, the proposed method is effective and can reduce the calculation time greatly. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a recursive sliding transform (RST) algorithm is proposed for the fast implementation of the Walsh Hadamard Transform (WHT) on sliding windows. The proposed RST algorithm accelerates the sliding WHT process by recursively reducing the order of WHT. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed RST algorithm requires only 1.33 additions per sample for each WHT basis vector regardless of the size or dimension of the basis vector. The computational requirement of the proposed RST algorithm is the lowest among existing fast sliding WHT algorithms.

Tunable wavelength laser surface profilometry through tilted interference

Frequency-tunable lasers allow the removal of phase ambiguities in interferometric profilometry through the synthetic wavelength longer than height variations in the sample. The subsequent measurements lowering synthetic wavelengths and updating phase difference values improves the measurement. The surface profilometry on samples with tilted interference can lead to an initial synthetic phase map, though locally unambiguous, getting globally wrapped whose unwrapping can be difficult in the presence of noise. Starting with the synthetic phase map that is locally unambiguous but globally wrapped can still update the phase values through a recursive algorithm. The artefact of 2 pi jumps in the initial wrapped synthetic phase just gets carried forward which can be easily removed from the final phase map obtained with the shortest possible synthetic wavelength. Choosing a point on the sample surface as the point of comparison, the proposed interferometry scheme can be made immune to surrounding vibrations while tuning wavelengths.

Bridge response separation method based on recursive variational mode decomposition

Due to the influence of various factors on bridge sensors, the signals obtained often contain multiple signal components, including temperature and vehicle induced effect. It is necessary to separate and analyze individual signals in bridge health detection. In order to separate temperature and vehicle response components from complex signals, this article proposes an improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm based on recursive methods, which takes the mean value of each recursive block as the eigenvalue, fits the eigenvalues of each recursive block using the least squares method, and separates the first intrinsic mode function. The applicability of this method in the field of bridges was first verified through modal decomposition of simulated deflection and strain data. Then based on the health monitoring data of the Jingtai Expressway viaduct, the rapid separation of temperature response and vehicle response of the bridge has been achieved. The results indicate that the recursive method, in an online continuous decomposition environment, is approximately seven times faster than the traditional VMD algorithm. Moreover, when setting the same penalty factor, the mean square error obtained from separating finite element simulation data is smaller than that of VMD, and the separated actual measurement data has a higher correlation coefficient with temperature. This resolves the computational speed issue of the VMD algorithm in real-time bridge health monitoring, demonstrating the feasibility of the recursive algorithm, and effectively separates signals related to temperature and vehicles.

Fast-tracking method of inertial constant based on system identification

Aiming at the problem of quantitative inertia evaluation of a new energy electric power system, the system inertia constant tracking method based on system identification is studied. The method is divided into two categories: non-recursive algorithm and recursive algorithm. The non-recursive algorithm uses a batch of data for batch processing to obtain the estimated value of the identification model parameters. The recursive algorithm is based on the estimated value of the model parameter at the previous moment and corrects the estimated value based on the new data currently obtained. From the perspective of the identification principle, the difference and internal relationship between the two in terms of calculation storage and identification speed are analyzed. The IEEE typical system is used to compare and verify the experimental examples. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the recursive algorithm has high identification accuracy, stable identification results and fast identification speed. It is suitable for the identification of objects with large numbers of nodes and complex structures, which is conducive to real-time monitoring and fast perception of the inertia constant of the new energy power system.

A two-stage Bayesian framework for rapid dynamics identification in industrial robots

Accurate dynamic models that update in real-time are vital for industrial robots to adapt flexibly and robustly to evolving environments and tasks, enabling precise model-based control, motion planning and disturbance estimation. However, the identification of a dynamic robot model involves multiple challenges. First, existing friction models cannot accurately characterize torque variance during prolonged robot operations. Second, traditional offline identification methods such as the least squares (LS) method, suffer from over-fitting when the inertia parameters are unknown a priori. Furthermore, existing online identification approaches, such as sliding LS, fail to meet the accuracy and real-time requirements of industrial robots. To address these challenges, this article proposes a two-stage Bayesian framework for rapid offline identification and online updating of industrial robot dynamics. In the offline stage, we developed a recursive sparse Bayesian learning (RSBL) method to select the dominant parameters and discover a thermal-related nonlinear dynamic friction model from data, which was then used to find a sparser and simpler inertia model. The obtained friction and inertia models were used as prior knowledge for online updating. The RSBL method significantly reduces the computational complexity and runtime, while it also accelerates online model updating. Experimental results for a 6-DOF medium-load robot validate dual offline improvements in prediction accuracy and model sparsity, along with higher online prediction accuracy and shorter computational time.

Energy harvesting induced by the vibration of reciprocating-piston compressor subjected to repetitive impulse

In this study, discrete event time-variant parameter of a lumped SISO dynamical system is obtained for a novel energy harvester. The harvester utilizes the resonance vibration of a coupled fluid-mechanic system, which is comprised of a reciprocating-piston, a tunable oscillator and twin electric turbine generators. The system model is simplified by an underdamped spring-mass-damper with tunable parameters subjected to periodic or arbitrary impulse forces. We developed a method that solves general problems underlining non-homogenous ordinary second order differential equation with discrete event time-variant parameters. The method uses the superposition to compile the general solution by segmenting the problem into ODE equations with constant coefficient. Each segment corresponds to a change in system, and it is solved analytically with recursively updated initial conditions. We utilized this method to tune the system's natural frequency such that the accumulated energy is maximum within desired time range. We obtained the general solution of the displacement response due to varying parameters and input impulse force. We obtained the displacement peaks and their time of occurrence that could help understand the structural design limitation. We showed system displacement responses (constructive and destructive) corresponding to various impulse repetition patterns. We derived the relationship between energy, volume displacement, and volumetric flow rate (or piston velocity) and provided illustrative case studies. One finding shows that for a given impulse condition the accumulative energy exhibits local maximum and minimum within a narrow band of natural frequency range. The simulations showed the feasibility of generating considerable power from electric turbine when the air flow is driven by a resonating piston.

A recursive Optimization Approach for Buffer Allocation in Large Production Lines

Buffer allocation is a critical issue in the design stage of manufacturing systems, as buffer capacities may have a great impact on system performance. In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing the total buffer capacity of a flow line to achieve a desired production rate. A recursive optimization approach is proposed to solve the problem in large production lines. Instead of optimizing a long line directly, the proposed approach decomposes it into two sub-lines, optimizes them recursively, and combines their solutions to find the optimal buffer distribution of the original line. Two different recursive algorithms are developed and their performance is demonstrated by comparing them with a gradient search algorithm. The numerical results show that the recursive algorithms are almost as accurate as the gradient algorithm, but much more efficient, especially for large production lines.

Gradient-Based recursive Parameter Estimation Methods for a Class of Time-Varying Systems from Noisy Observations

It is essential for meeting the stringent real-time demands encountered in actual production scenarios. Employing the low computational complexity of recursive algorithms, some new schemes are developed for the parameter estimation of a class of time-varying systems. The temporal evolution of parameters is characterized through the autoregressive process, facilitating the construction of the identification model with regard to the autoregressive coefficients. Based on the computational efficiency of the gradient search, a parametric autoregression-based stochastic gradient algorithm is derived with an appropriate step size, achieving a compromise between the steepest descent and convergence rate. In order to address the limitation of the low estimation accuracy in gradient algorithms, a parametric autoregression-based multi-innovation stochastic gradient algorithm is explored by making use of the favorable information for corrections. The simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Therefore, for a class of time-varying systems whose parameters become the further insight through the autoregressive process, the proposed gradient methods can obtain the parameter estimates faster and more accurately while ensuring the real-time performance of time-varying systems.
