The problem of recursive robust identification of linear discrete-time dynamic stochastic systems, when the a priori disturbance statistics are incomplete, is discussed. Min-max robust identification algorithms of stochastic gradient type are derived, making use of a priori data, such as the class of distributions to which the unknown disturbance distribution belongs. Making use of prior statistical information on the estimated parameters, the rate of estimates convergence at initial steps is improved. The convergence of the developed algorithms is established theoretically, using the martingale theory. The results of simulation demonstrating the robustness of the proposed algorithms are also included.

We study the optical and electrical properties of silver films with a graded thickness obtained through metallic evaporation in vacuum on a tilted substrate to evaluate their use as semitransparent electrical contacts. We measure their ellipsometric coefficients, optical transmissions and electrical conductivity for different widths, and we employ an efficient recursive method to calculate their macroscopic dielectric function, their optical properties and their microscopic electric fields. The topology of very thin films corresponds to disconnected islands, while very wide films are simply connected. For intermediate widths the film becomes semicontinuous, multiply connected, and its microscopic electric field develops hotspots at optical resonances which appear near the percolation threshold of the conducting phase, yielding large ohmic losses that increase the absorptance above that of a corresponding homogeneous film. Optimizing the thickness of the film to maximize its transmittance above the percolation threshold of the conductive phase we obtained a film with transmittance T = 0.41 and a sheet resistance R-s(max) approximate to 2.7 Omega. We also analyze the observed emission frequency shift of porous silicon electroluminescent devices when Ag films are used as solid electrical contacts in replacement of electrolytic ones.

Multibody dynamics is based on analytical mechanics and is applied to engineering systems such as a wide variety of machines and all kind of vehicles. Multibody dynamics depends on computational dynamics and is closely related to control design and vibration theory. Recent developments in multibody dynamics focus on elastic or flexible systems, respectively, contact and impact problems, and actively controlled systems. Some fundamentals in multibody dynamics, recursive algorithms and methods for dynamical analysis are presented. In particular, methods from linear system analysis and nonlinear dynamics approaches are discussed. Also, applications from vehicles, manufacturing science and molecular dynamics are shown. ?2006 American Society of Mechanical Engineers

A new method for identification of nonlinear systems using the Hammerstein model is presented, This is developed along the lines of the basic Kalman filter and has an important property for on-line identification that parameters of the nonlinear static polynomial and those of the linear dynamic transfer function are estimated recursively and separately;thus, the number of coefficients to be estimated is minimal, and computational requirements are considerably reduced. This procedure is extended to nonlinear multi-input single-output (MISO) systems. Two recursive methods are derived. The first one consists of estimating parameters of an equivalent realization of the nonlinear MISO representation. The second recursive algorithm estimates recursively and separately parameters of each submodel of the system, using a new formulation of the input-output difference equation. Both procedures are based on the algorithm developed in the nonlinear single-input single-output (SISO) case. To illustrate the efficiency of these algorithms, numerical examples are provided.

Rectangular Full Packed Format for Cholesky's Algorithm: Factorization, Solution, and Inversion

We describe a new data format for storing triangular, symmetric, and Hermitian matrices called Rectangular Full Packed Format (RFPF). The standard two-dimensional arrays of Fortran and C (also known as full format) that are used to represent triangular and symmetric matrices waste nearly half of the storage space but provide high performance via the use of Level 3 BLAS. Standard packed format arrays fully utilize storage (array space) but provide low performance as there is no Level 3 packed BLAS. We combine the good features of packed and full storage using RFPF to obtain high performance via using Level 3 BLAS as RFPF is a standard full-format representation. Also, RFPF requires exactly the same minimal storage as packed the format. Each LAPACK full and/or packed triangular, symmetric, and Hermitian routine becomes a single new RFPF routine based on eight possible data layouts of RFPF. This new RFPF routine usually consists of two calls to the corresponding LAPACK full-format routine and two calls to Level 3 BLAS routines. This means no new software is required. As examples, we present LAPACK routines for Cholesky factorization, Cholesky solution, and Cholesky inverse computation in RFPF to illustrate this new work and to describe its performance on several commonly used computer platforms. Performance of LAPACK full routines using RFPF versus LAPACK full routines using the standard format for both serial and SMP parallel processing is about the same while using half the storage. Performance gains are roughly one to a factor of 43 for serial and one to a factor of 97 for SMP parallel times faster using vendor LAPACK full routines with RFPF than with using vendor and/or reference packed routines.

Improvements of the Servo Behaviour of the Musmar Self-Tuning Controller

The MUSMAR self-tuning controller was carefully examined with respect to its servo behaviour. In spite of its nice overall behaviour, several imperfections were discovered. A modified algorithm, without these imperfections will be proposed. The proposed algorithm is also equipped with an offset estimation and an adaptation mechanism to avoid the burst effect. A comparison between the original and the modified algorithm is made. This will be illustrated with several simulation and real-time experiments.

This paper is concerned with using stochastic approximation and optimization methods for stock liquidation decision making and option pricing. For stock liquidation problem, we present a class of stochastic recursive algorithms, and make comparisons of performances using stochastic approximation methods and that of certain commonly used heuristic methods, such as moving averaging method and moving maximum method. Stocks listed in NASDAQ are used for making the comparisons. For option pricing, we design stochastic optimization algorithms and present numerical experiments using data derived from Berkeley Options Data Base. An important problem in these studies concerns the rate of convergence taking into consideration of bias and noise variance. In an effort to ascertain the convergence rates incorporating the computational efforts, we use a Liapunov function approach to obtain the desired convergence rates. Variants of the algorithms are also suggested.

Nonlinear black box identification of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system

Abstract This paper discusses the identification of linear and non-linear black-box models for describing a diesel engine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. SCR aftertreatment systems form an important technology for reducing the NO x produced by diesel engines, and therefore good models are essential for the control of these systems. This paper compares a linear and a non-linear model for identification of the system. The output signals of the SCR were generated from 4 measured input signals, using a simulated 18 state model. The experiments with a recursive prediction error method, RPEM, with only 2 states show that the system can be accurately approximated with a much simpler model. The RPEM estimates 16 unknown parameters while the linear model uses 9 parameters. The results were compared based on the model fit and it was clear from the validation data set that the non-linear model gives better results and captures more of the system dynamics as compared to the linear model. A comparison of the RPEM using the midpoint integration method and the Euler method for discretisation was also made for the models. The results clearly show that the more accurate discretisation algorithm results in a better model fit.
