An improved algorithm for delay constrained relay node deployment in wireless sensor networks

Given that Delay Constrained relay node Placement (DCRNP) problem is getting more and more attention in time-critical domains, this paper proposes an Improved Greedy-based Selection Algorithm (IGSA) to tackle such problem under delay and budget constraints. IGSA first employs communication cost matrix and Dijkstra's algorithm to detect whether the problem is solvable, then selects the amount and locations of deployed relay nodes (RNs) layer by layer by continuously calling the greedy coverage algorithm until all sensors have a feasible path to the sink under a preset delay constraint, and finally removes redundant RNs to reach the approximate optimal solution. Extensive simulations show that our approach can save 15%-30% of deployed RNs than the Two-phase Set-Covering-based Algorithm (TSCA), which is the state-of-the-art algorithm for the DCRNP problem, only with a slight sacrifice of solving time. Meanwhile, Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol is applied to further examine the performance of the deployment results solved by TSCA and IGSA, respectively. Results show that every RN deployed by IGSA is involved in data forwarding, while IGSA deploys leisure RNs which do not participate in the data forwarding. Besides, compared with TSCA, the network formed by IGSA has lower network delay in the data transmission process, and the energy consumption of the central node and throughput of the two topologies are almost at the same level.

The increasing traffic demands in the past few years require further expansion of cellular network capacity. Densely deployed base stations may cause a large amount of energy consumption and lots of environmental problems. relaying is considered as a promising cost-efficient solution for capacity expansion and energy saving due to the physical characteristics and low power requirements of the relay nodes. In this paper, we study the energy harvesting relay node deployment problem in a cellular network where the user distribution may change with time. We propose a greedy relay nodes deployment algorithm to satisfy the network capacity requirements in different time and put forward an operation optimization algorithm to make full use of renewable energy. Simulation results show that the network capacity can be increased significantly and the energy consumption can be reduced dramatically by the proposed algorithms.

Partition Connectivity Recovery Based on relay node deployment for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we address the problem of partition connectivity recovery based on relay node deployment for wireless sensor networks. We firstly propose a graph theory based method to accurately detect partitions in the network which consists of vast low-energy sensor nodes. To restore the communication links between these partitions, we present a heuristic Steiner tree based partition recovery algorithm by deploying high-energy relay nodes. The suitable quadrilaterals or triangles are chosen to connect the disjoint partitions and their Steiner nodes are found. The minimum number of relay nodes are placed on the edges of Steiner tree. Experimental results show that our algorithm can achieve partition connectivity recovery for wireless sensor networks with a smaller number of relay nodes and less energy consumption of network communication compared to MST algorithm.

Problem Characteristics and Dynamic Search Balance-Based Artificial Bee Colony for the Optimization of Two-Tiered WSN Lifetime with relay nodes deployment

Lifetime optimization is one of the key issues among the many challenges of wireless sensor networks. The introduction of a small number of high-performance relay nodes can effectively improve the quality of the network services. However, how to deploy these nodes reasonably to fully enhance the network lifetime becomes a very difficult problem. In this study, a modified and enhanced Artificial Bee Colony is proposed to maximize the lifetime of a two-tiered wireless sensor network by optimal deployment of relay nodes. First, the dimension of the problem is introduced into the candidate search equation and the local search is adjusted according to the fitness of the problem and number of iterations, which helps to balance the exploration and exploitation ability of the algorithm. Second, in order to prevent the algorithm from falling into local convergence, a dynamic search balance strategy is proposed instead of the scout bee phase in the original Artificial Bee Colony. Then, a feasible solution formation method is proposed to ensure that the relay nodes can form the upper-layer backbone of the network. Finally, we employ this algorithm on a test dataset obtained from the literature. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm for two-tiered wireless sensor network lifetime optimization can obtain higher and stable average network lifetime and more reasonable relay node deployment compared to other classical and state-of-the-art algorithms, verifying the competitive performance of the proposed algorithm.

An underwater acoustic wireless sensor network (UA-WSN) consists of many resourceconstrained underwater sensor nodes (USNs), which are deployed to perform collaborative monitoring tasks over a given region. One way to preserve network connectivity while guaranteeing other network QoS is to deploy some relay nodes (RNs) in the networks. Although RNs' function is more powerful than USNs, but they can lead to more interference and their cost is more expensive. This paper addresses constrained low-interference relay node deployment problem for 3-D UA-WSNs in which the RNs are placed at a subset of candidate locations to ensure connectivity between the USNs such that the number of RNs deployed and the value of total incremental interference are minimized. We first prove that it is NP-hard, then propose a general approximation algorithm framework. Based on the framework, we get two polynomial time O(1)-approximation algorithms.

A gravitational search algorithm for solving the relay node placement problem in wireless sensor networks

Nowadays, the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is increasing in many fields of application, such as industrial monitoring, home automation, and intensive agriculture. However, this technology presents an important shortcoming, which has not been solved yet: the energy efficiency. This factor involves a critical economic disadvantage, affecting quality of service. This situation led us to tackle the relay node placement problem, that is, the addition of relay nodes to traditional WSNs as a way to optimize such networks, assuming two important factors: energy consumption and average coverage. To achieve this goal, three multi-objective (MO) evolutionary algorithms are considered (non-dominated sorting genetic algoritm II, strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2, and MO gravitational search algorithm), assuming a freely available data set and different stop criteria to analyze the behavior of the algorithms. All the results obtained are studied through a widely accepted statistical methodology and two MO metrics (hypervolume and set coverage), concluding that the novel swarm intelligence algorithm MO gravitational search algorithm provides the best performance on average. Moreover, we study the advantages provided by the addition of relay nodes to traditional WSNs. Finally, we compare our proposal with another author approach, assuming a heuristic. Wireless sensor network (WSN) provides a reliable solution for the smart grid's end-user metering, control, and communication. In this paper, we consider the wireless sensor network as the communication infrastructure for smart grid implementation in buildings. We present a scheme for the wireless sensor network deployment in buildings, in which sensors are massively placed to meter electricity consumption and collect illumination, thermal, pressure information;and multiple base stations are available to connect with the communication network for power grid distribution network. This scheme identifies the specific requirements of metering and control in buildings, provides optimal deployment of WSN, and utilizes simulation tool to simulate building environment and test optimal deployed WSN. We take the deployment of relay nodes to consist a WSN in buildings as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme. For the relay nodes deployment instance, we propose integer programming approaches for both deterministic and robust cases and utilize the simulation to validate and test optimal deployed WSN.
