The study of the hypocenter distribution of seismic events related to fault structures is a crucial topic since it is linked to the geological features and to the dynamics of an investigated area. The hypocenter spatial distribution of earthquakes is used in a novel algorithmic method to clusterize earthquakes to accurately identify the strike and the dip parameters of seismogenic faults. Our algorithm works as a fast and efficient explorer in a five-dimensional space (x, y, z, tau, phi). It randomly selects several seismic events (pivots) and counts in all angular directions, for each pivot, how many hypocenters can be included in a prefixed volume (two dimensions larger than the third). The result is a volume that contains the maximum number of earthquakes occurring within a minimum distance from a flat area corresponding to the searched fault. With this volume is associated a hypocenter occurrence density angular diagram and a likelihood function. The likelihood function is useful to individuate the best value of the fault thickness and to test the hypothesis of fault flatness. Our algorithm was tested on simulated data and then successfully applied to the real case of the 2009 Mw6.1 L'Aquila (Central Italy) seismic sequence.

In deep space communications, the received signals are always highly dynamic and very weak, which makes it quite challenging to achieve reliable data reception. To tackle these problems, a robust algorithm which joins tracking and code-aided synchronisation is proposed in this study. The frequency lock loop-assisted phase lock loop is used as the tracking loop, which integrates the characteristics of both outstanding dynamic performance and precise measurement. The code-aided synchronisation is adopted as the demodulation and decoding loop, which utilises the relationship among the coded symbols to assist signal demodulation under the low signal-to-noise ratio condition. It is worth pointing out that the power tradeoff between the main carrier and subcarrier signals which operate in the two loops mentioned above is also optimised to minimise the total transmitting power. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme with code rate 1/5 low-density parity-check codes could almost eliminate the effect of these factors, with the excellent performance, which closely approximates the ideal decoder in additive white Gaussian noise channel.

A fault-transient synchrophasor is computed over a window of pre-fault and fault samples. A fault synchrophasor is computed over a window of fault samples only. Fault-transient synchrophasors are discarded and are generally not used in the synchrophasor applications. Recently, an algorithm has been proposed to compute fault synchrophasor from fault-transient synchrophasor in phasor data concentrator (PDC). The accuracy of the existing algorithm deteriorates due to fault-induced transients and inaccurate fault starting time. A robust algorithm has been proposed to compute fault synchrophasor from fault-transient synchrophasor in PDC. The proposed algorithm does not use fault starting time in the calculations. It also performs better than the existing algorithm when fault-induced transients are present in the signal. The proposed algorithm is simple, non-iterative and performs satisfactorily in various investigated scenarios. The advantage of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated in the context of fault location application.

Although today water is becoming more and more precious, its major waste is caused by transportation. The authorities in charge of the management of water pipes indicate double-digit percentage of waste, sometimes it even exceeds 50% the amount of water mostly lost by inefficiency of distribution waterworks. In this study, the authors present an alternative method of spectral analysis, used for detecting leaks in water pipes, with respect to classical spectral methods as direct Fourier transform/fast Fourier transform. They have used decimated Pade approximant (DPA), where the input time signal points or auto-correlation functions are given via measurements or computations, and the task is to reconstruct the unknown components as the harmonic variables in terms of the fundamental complex frequencies and amplitudes. They have also introduced decimated linear predictor technique as direct consequence of the DPA, since they differ only in one step, namely the calculation of the amplitudes.

In this paper, the problem of synthesis of a robust algorithm for detecting radar signals reflected from a moving target against the background of broadband non-Gaussian clutter is considered. An empirical Bayesian approach has been implemented to synthesize a decision rule, using Laplace's autoregressive noise interference model, and develop a robust adaptive algorithm. Computer simulations were conducted to determine the effectiveness of the robust algorithm under the influence of non-Gaussian clutter.

Alarm fatigue is a major issue in patient monitoring that could be reduced by merging physiological information from multiple sensors, minimizing the impact of a single sensor failing. We developed a heart beat detection algorithm that utilizes multi-modal physiological waveforms (e.g. ECG, blood pressure, stroke volume, photo plethysmogram and electroencephalogram). The 100 record training set from the Physionet challenge 2014 was used for development. The algorithm was evaluated at three testing phases during the 2014 challenge consisting of 100 (phase I), 200 (phase II) and 300 (phase III) hidden records, respectively. A true positive was declared if a beat was detected within 150 ms of a reference annotation. The algorithm had a sensitivity of > 99.9%, Positive Predictive Value of 99.7%, and an overall score (average of sensitivity and Positive Predictive Value) of 99.8% when applied to the training set. The best overall performance on the test sets were: 88.9%, 76.3% and 84.4% for phases I, II and Ill, respectively. We developed a robust heart beat detector that fuses annotations from multiple individual detectors. The algorithm improves the training results compared to ECG detections alone, and performs well on the test sets. Data fusion approaches like this one can improve patient monitoring and reduce false alarms.

A robust algorithm for Real-Time Peak Detection of Photoplethysmograms Using a Personal Computer Mouse

Monitoring the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is essential for cardiovascular patients in the hospital or at home, as well as for those working in front of a personal computer (PC) at the office every day. Therefore, we developed a wireless PPG mouse that consists of a PC mouse, PPG sensor, and Bluetooth mote. The sensor is located within the PC mouse, therefore, the structure of the ordinary mouse is not changed. A user's thumb can easily touch the surface of a sensor for PPG signal monitoring. However, it is challenging to process the signals collected from the PPG mouse, especially in the cases where the mouse moves quickly or the user performs multiple actions on the mouse buttons. In this paper, we propose a robust algorithm to detect the PPG peak under big motion artifact conditions. In the proposed algorithm, an adaptive method enables simultaneous detection of true peaks and eliminates fake peaks from the acquired PPG signal. Next, these detected error peaks can be corrected by a random error estimator. The combination of two sequential methods enhances the robustness of the algorithm for distinguishing irregular PPG patterns. The proposed algorithm presents an advantage for real-time applications and continuous heart rate monitoring systems using a wireless PPG sensor implemented in a PC mouse.

This paper proposes a robust algorithm based on an extended complex Kalman filter (ECKF) for improving frequency estimation of distorted power system signals. In general, abnormal data obtained from measurements may cause noises and disturbances of power systems as well as affect the accuracy of frequency estimation. For this reason, the proposed algorithm is employed to suppress the abnormalities from abnormal data of measurements for promoting the efficiency in frequency estimation. Moreover, not only can it perform the ECKF without changing any form of it, but it can also save the execution time. Results of frequency estimation for distorted signals using the proposed method are compared with the ECKF.

A robust algorithm for semidefinite programming

Current successful methods for solving semidefinite programs (SDPs) are based on primal-dual interior-point approaches. These usually involve a symmetrization step to allow for application of Newton's method followed by block elimination to reduce the size of the Newton equation. Both these steps create ill-conditioning in the Newton equation and singularity of the Jacobian of the optimality conditions at the optimum. In order to avoid the ill-conditioning, we derive and test a backwards stable primal-dual interior-point method for SDP. Relative to current public domain software, we realize both a distinct improvement in the accuracy of the optimum and a reduction in the number of iterations. This is true for random problems as well as for problems of special structure. Our algorithm is based on a Gauss-Newton approach applied to a single bilinear form of the optimality conditions. The well-conditioned Jacobian allows for a preconditioned (matrix-free) iterative method for finding the search direction at each iteration.
