Current research in minefield detection indicates that operationally no single sensor technology will likely be capable of detecting mines/minefields in a real-time manner and at a performance level suitable for a forward maneuver unit. Minefield detection involves a particularly wide range of operating scenarios and environmental conditions, which requires deployment of complementary sensor suites. Consequently, the NVESD sponsored Signal Processing and Algorithm Development for robust Mine Detection (SPAD) Program is currently focusing on the development of computationally efficient and robust detection algorithms applicable to a variety of sensors and on the development of a robust decision level fusion algorithm that exploits these detectors. One SPAD detection technique, called the Ellipse Detector, has been previously reported in the open literature. We briefly report on the continued robust performance of this detector on some new sensor output. We also report on another robust detector developed for sensors that produce output not suitable for the Ellipse Detector. However, the focus of this paper is on the SPAD decision level fusion algorithm, called the Piecewise Level Fusion Algorithm (PLFA). We emphasize the robustness and flexibility of the PLFA architecture by describing its performance and results for both multisensor and multilook fusion.

Allocating bandwidth for a certain period of time is an often encountered problem in networks offering some kind of quality of service (QoS) support. In particular, for aggregate demand the required bandwidth at each point in time may exhibit considerable fluctuations, random fluctuations as well as systematic fluctuations due to different activity at different times of day. In any case, there is a considerable amount of uncertainty to be dealt with by strategies for effectively allocating bandwidth. In this paper, we try to devise so-called robust strategies for bandwidth allocation under uncertainty. The notion of robustness here means that we look for strategies which perform well under most circumstances, but not necessarily best for a given situation. By simulations, we compare the different strategies we propose with respect to the robustness and performance they achieve in terms of (virtual) cost savings. We show that robustness and good performance need not be contradictory goals and furthermore that very good strategies need not be complex, either.

We develop an efficient algorithm for weak recovery in a robust version of the stochastic block model. The algorithm matches the statistical guarantees of the best known algorithms for the vanilla version of the stochastic block model. In this sense, our results show that there is no price of robustness in the stochastic block model. Our work is heavily inspired by recent work of Banks, Mohanty, and Raghavendra (SODA 2021) that provided an efficient algorithm for the corresponding distinguishing problem. Our algorithm and its analysis significantly depart from previous ones for robust recovery. A key challenge is the peculiar optimization landscape underlying our algorithm: The planted partition may be far from optimal in the sense that completely unrelated solutions could achieve the same objective value. This phenomenon is related to the push-out effect at the BBP phase transition for PCA. To the best of our knowledge, our algorithm is the first to achieve robust recovery in the presense of such a push-out effect in a non-asymptotic setting. Our algorithm is an instantiation of a framework based on convex optimization (related to but distinct from sum-of-squares), which may be useful for other robust matrix estimation problems. A by-product of our analysis is a general technique that boosts the probability of success (over the randomness of the input) of an arbitrary robust weak-recovery algorithm from constant (or slowly vanishing) probability to exponentially high probability.

This work introduces a robust algorithm for computing good polygonal approximations of implicit surfaces, where robustness entails recovering the exact topology of the implicit surface. Furthermore, the approximate triangle mesh adapts to the geometry and to the topology of the real implicit surface. This method generates an octree subdivided according to the interval evaluation of the implicit function in order to guarantee the robustness, and to the interval automatic differentiation in order to adapt the octree to the geometry of the implicit surface. The triangle mesh is then generated from that octree through an enhanced dual marching.

Many techniques for improving search result quality have been proposed. Typically, these techniques increase average effectiveness by devising advanced ranking features and/or by developing sophisticated learning to rank algorithms. However, while these approaches typically improve average performance of search results relative to simple baselines, they often ignore the important issue of robustness. That is, although achieving an average gain overall, the new models often hurt performance on many queries. This limits their application in real-world retrieval scenarios. Given that robustness is an important measure that can negatively impact user satisfaction, we present a unified framework for jointly optimizing effectiveness and robustness. We propose an objective that captures the tradeoff between these two competing measures and demonstrate how we can jointly optimize for these two measures in a principled learning framework. Experiments indicate that ranking models learned this way significantly decreased the worst ranking failures while maintaining strong average effectiveness on par with current state-of-the-art models.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems greatly increase the overall throughput of wireless systems since they are capable of transmitting multiple streams employing the same time-frequency resources. However, this gain requires an appropriate precoder design and a power allocation technique. In general, precoders and power allocation schemes are designed assuming perfect channel estate information (CSI). Nonetheless, this is an optimistic assumption since real systems only possess partial or imperfect CSI at the transmitter (CSIT). The imperfect CSIT originates residual inter-user interference, which is detrimental for wireless systems. In this paper, two adaptive power allocation algorithms are proposed, which are more robust against CSIT imperfections than conventional techniques. Both techniques employ the mean square error as the objective function. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques obtain a higher performance in terms of sum-rate than conventional approaches.

The authors consider the statistical analysis of threshold crossing intervals, as applied to estimation of tachycardia rates from intracavitary electrograms. The authors developed a class of robust algorithms designed to produce minimum variance estimates for tachycardia rates. The authors formulated the algorithms using order statistic filters, and obtained the minimum variance unbiased order statistic estimator. The potential gain in efficiency achieved by this approach is demonstrated via a representative example. The results indicated that the order statistics operator can produce dramatic reductions for typical errors in error variance as compared to linear estimators. © 1993.

We studied the problem of robust subspace tracking (RST) in contaminated environments. Leveraging the fast approximated power iteration and α-divergence, a novel robust algorithm called αFAPI was developed for tracking the underlying principal subspace of streaming data over time. αFAPI is fast and it outperforms many RST methods while only having a low complexity linear to the data dimension. Some experiments were conducted to illustrate the performance of αFAPI. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the detection technique, emphasizing its robust architecture, and provides performance results for image data generated by complementary sensors. The paper also briefly discusses the application of this detector as a component of fusion architectures for processing returns from diverse imaging sensors, including multichannel image data from disparate sensors.

We propose a method of evaluating signs of 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 determinants with b-bit integer entries using only b and (b + 1)-bit arithmetic, respectively. This algorithm has numerous applications in geometric computation and provides a general and practical approach to robustness. The algorithm has been implemented and compared with, other exact computation methods.
