round robin (RR) scheduling algorithm certainly is one of the most popular algorithms. In this algorithm, a static time quantum is given to each process. However it suffers from certain problems which are mainly related to the size of time quantum. Larger the time quantum, larger is the response and waiting time of processes. Similarly if the time quantum is too small then the overhead of CPU increases because CPU has to perform greater number of context switches. This paper focuses on the optimization techniques in round robin algorithm. Several algorithms have been proposed which use a dynamic time quantum, rather than a static one. The concept of mean, median, dispersion and others are used to calculate time quantum for processes in ready queue based on their remaining burst time. An approach based on multiple time quanta has also been proposed in this paper. Finally it has been shown through implementation and results that these algorithms are able to solve the problems of conventional round robin algorithm. A better turnaround time, response time and waiting time has been achieved through the implementation of these algorithms.

Randomly prioritized buffer-less routing architecture for 3D Network on Chip

Recently, 3D NoC has become more important than 2D NoC due its new geometrical arrangement and also reduces the wire length from global interconnect to local interconnect. One of the main components to implement 3D NoC is the router. The components of the router are crossbar, FIFO, and arbiter. The scheduling algorithm is the main part of the arbiter which schedules and delivers all packets to the destination nodes without any loss of packets. Packets that have the highest priority are served first,the remaning highest priority packets ares queued in the priority register and non-priority packets are served after all priority packets are served. round robin routing algorithm is commonly used as the scheduling algorithm in most of the routers. This paper proposes a novel 3D lottery routing algorithm which is based on arbitral mechanism like randomly prioritized buffer. Communication among the IPs in NoC can be customized by users through the lottery router. The lottery routing algorithm distinguishes the different priorities of the input port and makes sure that it responses to the higher priority port. The efficient hardware implementation of 3D NoC is proposed using Xilinx Spartan 3E FPGA, the result shows that the proposed architecture consumes 1644 slices out of 4656 slices and operates at the maximum frequency of about 103.602 MHz. The 3D NoC is modeled and implemented with a Cadence Electronic Design Automation tool and the results show that the power consumption of 3D NoC is reduced by 9% compared to a single layer. In order to meet the need for high-speed data processing, system designers have adopted Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) design. Network-on-chip (NoC) promises to be a viable solution as the basic communication fabric for such designs. A router is the basic component of NoC and using efficient internal blocks to design a router is expected to improve the performance of a router as a whole. One such block of prime importance is an arbitration unit. The commonly used arbitration logics include Fixed Priority, Lottery and round robin algorithm. However, they lack the capability of dynamically changing the priority according to data flit rates of specific ports. Thus a requester sending more requests can suffer from starvation and ultimately loss of data if not served within due course of time. In this work, we propose an improved round robin algorithm, for increasing Quality-of-Service (QoS) of a router. This is achieved by making use of an additional control signal from the buffer of each input port named as Buffer full (b_f). This addition will help us avoid the starvation condition of input ports which have more data flits to send than the lightly loaded input ports. The superiority of the proposed method than the conventional one is its feasibility for non-uniform traffic applications. All the circuits are implemented using Vivado 2016.2, with Zed-board as the target board. The proposed design is expected to find its application in areas where the traffic pattern is not certain and can vary from uniform to hot-spot traffic.

Eucalyptus is an open source cloud platform, scholars can study many problems of cloud computing from its extendibility and open source. In terms of the research about resource scheduling, Eucalyptus has its own three algorithms, Greedy algorithm, round robin algorithm and Power Save algorithm. They each only consider part of resource scheduling. The existing algorithms can not meet a comprehensive need, such as load balancing, migration cost, QOS and so on. Therefore, a new algorithm which can get global optimization solution is proposed. Genetic algorithm has the features of global optimal and is easy to be implemented. To satisfy multiple goals about resource scheduling on Eucalyptus, a modified genetic algorithm for multi-criteria optimization based on Eucalyptus is presented. Experimental results show the merits and feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

The increasing number of mobile users and the growing demand for new multimedia streaming services have spurred a great deal of research on video streaming over wireless networks. Wireless channels have been shown to be band limited and time varying, resulting in significant amount of loss and delay, hence causing missed packet. The proposed system provides high stream of video received in mobile application. The video is splitted into burst like equal size and the splitted packets are numbered and then each of them are encrypted and transmitted across network layer. Each node in the network is used as a peer for data transmission. round robin and network packet scheduling algorithm are used for transmitting burst video in multithreaded manner to distributed environment. In receiver side, buffer used to collect all burst video in same time which improves latency.

With the technological advancements a large number of devices can be integrated into a single chip. So the communication between these devices becomes vital. The network on chip (NoC) is a technology used for such communication. A router is the fundamental component of a NoC. This paper focuses on the implementation and the verification of a five port router. The building blocks of the router are buffering registers, demultiplexer, First In First Out registers, and schedulers. The scheduler uses the round robin algorithm. The proposed architecture of five port router is simulated in Xilinx ISE 10.1 software. The source code is written in VHDL.

The university course timetabling problem involves assigning a given number of events into a limited number of timeslots and rooms under a given set of constraints;the objective is to satisfy the hard constraints (essential requirements) and minimize the violation of soft constraints (desirable requirements). In this study we employed a Dual-sequence Simulated Annealing (DSA) algorithm as an improvement algorithm. The round robin (RR) algorithm is used to control the selection of neighbourhood structures within DSA. The performance of our approach is tested over eleven benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that our approach is able to generate competitive results when compared with other state-of-the-art techniques.
