Fast detection method of quick response code based on run-length coding

Quick response (QR) code, one of the two-dimensional barcodes, is now being widely used in all fields. The effectiveness of decoding, however, needs to be improved in real-time application. In most cases, the decoding procedure is time consuming, in which the detection of QR code plays an essential part. Therefore, this study proposes a fast detection method of QR code based on run-length coding: firstly, a novel approach is proposed to detect the minimum region containing position detection pattern (PDP) in QR code. Second, coordinates of central PDP in QR code are calculated by using run-length coding. The highlight in this step is the calculation, which utilises modified Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm. By this means, the computational complexity can be reduced tremendously. Finally, QR code can be detected successfully with the coordinates. The experimental results show that the proposed method is time saving and suitable for real-time application.

High-capacity reversible data hiding in encrypted images based on extended run-length coding and block-based MSB plane rearrangement

In this paper, we propose a novel reversible data hiding method in encrypted images. The proposed method takes full advantage of the spatial correlation in the original images to vacate room for embedding data before image encryption. By jointly using an extended run-length coding and a block-based most significant bit (MSB) plane rearrangement mechanism, the MSB planes of images can be compressed efficiently to generate room for high-capacity embedding. The receiver can extract data directly from encrypted images with only the data hiding key, and the original image or the high-quality plain image that contains secret data can be recovered with only the encryption key. The experimental results prove that the proposed method can reach a high embedding rate and a high PSNR. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

More efficient data compression can be achieved in encoding line drawings by vector chain coding (VCC) than by the traditional runlength coding (RLC), provided the total length of the lines within a line drawing is not excessive. More bandwidth or time can thus be saved in transmitting such pictures by using VCC. Although this has so far been established only intuitively, quantitative analysis and comparison of the coding efficiency of these two codes for line drawings are performed in this paper. The coding efficiency is measured in terms of both per-length coding rate and data compression ratio, which are determined for a class of handwritten line drawings characterised by a proper statistical model. In particular, the critical point of line drawing complexity is derived at which VCC becomes less efficient than RLC. Experimental observations are also presented to verify the theoretical results.

A selective scan chain reconfiguration through run-length coding for test data compression and scan power reduction

Test data volume and power consumption for scan-based designs are two major concerns in system-on-a-chip testing. However, test set compaction by filling the don't-cares will invariably increase the scan-in power dissipation for scan testing, then the goals of test data reduction and low-power scan testing appear to be conflicted. Therefore, in this paper we present a selective scan chain reconfiguration method for test data compression and scan-in power reduction. The proposed method analyzes the compatibility of the internal scan cells for a given test set and then divides the scan cells into compatible classes. After the scan chain reconfiguration a dictionary is built to indicate the run-length of each compatible class and only the scan-in data for each class should be transferred from the ATE to the CUT so as to reduce test data volume. Experimental results for the larger ISCAS' 89 benchmarks show that the proposed approach overcomes the limitations of traditional run-length coding techniques, and leads to highly reduced test data volume with significant power savings during scan testing in all cases.

The Hybrid encoder is trying to choose the better encoder between the Wavelet Difference Reduction (Type-W) and Simple Bit-plane (Type-B) to get the better results than pure Type-W or pure Type-B was proposed in previous research. In case that the most pixels are insignificant, Type-B will generate a long consecutive sequence of zero bits. By experimental results, the Modified Simple Bit-plane which is the combination of run-length encoding and Golomb encoding (Type-G) can improve the efficiency of the output bits sequence. The New Hybrid encoder which automatically chooses one of encoding type from the Type-W, Type-B and Type-G in each bit-plane of each subband should get the better results than the previously proposed Hybrid algorithm in each bit-plane of each subband. The proposed coder is evaluated for the performance in this paper.

A new scheme of test data compression and power reduction, namely common-run-length coding (CRLC) scheme is presented, which is based on run-length. This scheme uses two shorter codewords to represent the whole second run of two consecutive runs, the lengths of which are the same. Compared with other already known schemes this scheme has some characteristics, such as high compression ratio, low power dissipation, easy control and implementation. The performance of the algorithm is mathematically analyzed and its merits are experimentally confirmed on the larger examples of the ISCAS89 benchmark circuits.

This research work aims to investigate the performance of a suggested wavelet based image compression system. The scheme of the proposed system utilizes 917 biorthogonal wavelet transforms to decompose the image signal, then uses run-length coding, with a little modification, to compress the detail sub-bands. A hierarchal quantization scheme was applied to reduce the number of bits required to encode the wavelet coefficients. The test results indicate that the proposed compression scheme shows good performance aspects in addition to its simplicity.

run-length coding has recently attracted much attention in wavelet-based image compression because of its simplicity and potentially low complexity. The main drawback is the inferior RD-performance compared to the state-of-the-art-coder SPIHT. In this paper, we concentrate on the embedded progressive run-length code of Tian and Wells. We consider significance sequences drawn from the scan in the dominant pass. It turns out that self-similar curves for scanning the dominant pass increase the compression efficiency significantly. This is a consequence of the correlation of direct neighbors in the wavelet domain. This dependence can be better exploited by using groups of coefficients, similar to the SPIHT algorithm. This results in a new and very fast coding algorithm, which shows performance similar to the state-of-the-art coder SPIHT, but with lower complexity and small and fixed memory overhead.

An analysis of spatial context conditioning and run-length coding in embedded progressive, wavelet-based image coding is presented. The analysis shows that run-length coding of certain context subsequences is superior to pure entropy coding, both in terms of coding performance and of execution speed. Based on these considerations, a novel, intuitive context conditioning scheme using a spatial distance model to describe the statistics of significant coefficients is proposed. The results for the proposed coding scheme are competitive to the best coding schemes found in the literature.
