In this article, a novel robust compression-encryption of images based on Set partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (spiht) coding-decoding algorithm and synchronization of chaotic maps with non-integer order is proposed. The essential innovation in the proposed communication system is that the source image is compressed and encrypted by several secret keys. The developed transmission scheme is designed to take profit of two advantages. The first is the use of standard spiht coding which is an efficient and computationally very fast technique for image compression. The second is to introduce farther complexity to the cryptosystem through the use of fractional-order chaotic maps which has many advantages such as the generation of supplementary secret keys with respect to the discrete-time chaotic systems. From the obtained simulation results, we can see that the original image has been well encoded in the cipher text and retrieved with success through the chaotic signals. Further, to verify the high confidentiality of the presented cryptosystem, cryptanalysis is studied in detail through the various tests.

In this paper, we propose a partial compression-encryption of images using chaotic system and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) combined with Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (spiht). The proposed cryptosystem adopts three stages for confusion and diffusion which are well integrated into the compression chain. The chaotic system used in this approach is Chirikov Standard Map. Some cryptographic tests and metrics are applied to measure the degree of security and analyze the performance of the partial compression-encryption scheme. The evaluation and simulation analysis indicate that our proposal possesses excellent statistical and cryptographic properties;it is extremely sensitive to the small change in secret key, resists against common cryptanalytic attacks, has a high speed and provides high picture quality of the reconstructed image. The purpose of the digital image self-recovery is to restore high quality images as much as possible when the image is tampered. Existing algorithms can only achieve high recovered image quality with tiny tampering rate. To obtain high recovered image quality with large tampering rate, this paper proposes a digital image self-recovery algorithm based on improved JSCC (Joint Source-Channel coding) optimizer. The algorithm performs quadtree decomposition of original grayscale image corresponding to different decomposition factors gamma and performs bit-plane layering according to the block class obtained by quadtree decomposition. Size of each bit-plane is the number of pixels of each block class. Then, the original image is compressed by spiht, and the compressed bit-stream of spiht is segmented into bit-plane according to the size in order. The bit-planes are protected by different RS (Reed-Solomon) coders to get optimal decomposition result of corresponding gamma. Finally, JSCC optimization is designed to get an optimal quality of recovered image. Experimental results show that, using our algorithm, for 2-LSB embedding, when the tampering rate is less the minimum TTR (Tolerable Tempering Rate), the PSNR is improved by 4.93dB. When the tampering rate is larger the minimum TTR, the PSNR is improved by 2dB. When 3-LSB watermark are embedded, the PSNR of recovered image is improved by 2.58dB on average. It shows that our improved optimizer effectively improves the quality of the recovered image at high tampering rates, compared with the similar algorithms.

Owing to the underwater (UW) acoustic channel characteristic (i.e. low bandwidth and the multipath spreading) the real time multimedia (i.e. image and video) transmission over underwater acoustic (UWA) channel is a very tough task. Therefore, in this paper, an acoustic millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication channel is proposed to replace the conventional UWA channel. Where, the high bandwidth of acoustic mmWave is exploited to improve the UW communication throughput (megabit/sec). Moreover, the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (spiht) coder is used as an efficient source coder to effectively support the real-time underwater image transmission over the acoustic mmWave channel. However, a real measured UWA channel data are used in this paper to test the performances of the mmWave underwater communication. The data are collected from the South China Sea to demonstrate the acoustic mmWave underwater communication channel to be used to transmitting a high efficient real-time underwater image. The simulation results indicate the efficiency of multimedia communication over the UW acoustic mmWave channel. However, UW acoustic mmWave communication improves the peak signals-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance of the UW multimedia transmission.

Traditional wavelet-based image coding applies the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) on an image using filter banks over rings of characteristic zero. As the level of the DWT decomposition increases, the number of bits needed to represent the wavelet coefficients also increases. A significant amount of memory is needed to store these wavelet coefficients especially when the level of DWT decomposition is high. In this paper, a post-processing method is proposed to set the amplitude of the wavelet coefficients to pre-defined N-bits. The Set-Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (spiht) coding is then performed to encode these coefficients to achieve compression. The main advantage of our proposed work is the significant reduction in memory requirements for wavelet coefficients storage during bit-plane coding. Simulation results show that our proposed spiht coding using wavelet transform with post-processing gives an equally good compression performance when M-3 <= N <= M-1 where M and N are the number of bits needed to represent the largest wavelet coefficient without and with post-processing respectively.

A distributed video coding (DVC) system based on wavelet transform and set partition coding (SPC) is presented in this paper. Conventionally the significance map (sig-map) of SPC is not conducive to Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding, because of the difficulty of generating a side information sig-map and the sensitivity to decoding errors. The proposed DVC system utilizes a higher structured significance map, named progressive significance map (prog-sig-map), which structures the significance information into two parts: a high-level summation significance map (sum-sig-map) and a low-level complementary significance map (comp-sig-map). This prog-sig-map alleviates the above difficulties and thus makes part of the prog-sig-map (specifically, the fixed-length-coded comp-sig-map) suitable for SW coding. Simulation results are provided showing the improved rate-distortion performance of the DVC system even with a simple system configuration. (c) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a new wavelet-based lossless image coder that is based on a state-of-the-art algorithm, namely spiht (set partitioning in hierarchical trees). An algorithmic modification is introduced in order to increase its efficiency. This consists of adding a new test on direct descendants in the sets of type A to process the parent coefficients that are significant due to their nondirect descendants. Also, new sets of type C are defined to perform a separate sorting of the sets that have insignificant children. The idea behind the second proposition is to remove all tests over the entries (A, B and C) since the number of significant sets is much higher than that of insignificant sets. A number of experiments, carried out on various test images, demonstrates significant improvement over the conventional spiht for both greyscale and colour images. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Region-based coding is an important feature in today's image coding techniques as it follows different regions of the image that will be encoded at different bit rates and hence at different qualities rather than encoding the entire image with a single quality constraints. This article proposes an algorithm for the region-based coding of the brain magnetic resonance images in which the brain part will be encoded with more number of bits than the background. This method employs Shape Adaptive Discrete Wavelet Transform, which can transform the regions of interest and the background on the images independently and the coefficients can be encoded by using the spiht coding at different levels. This algorithm was compared with the existing wavelet-based coding techniques and a better PSNR was achieved for the same bit rate by reconstructing the region of interest with high quality than the background.
